00:00okay so the thing is being like knowing what suits me in a girl group is really
00:08different from knowing what suits me as a solo artist and now that I have like
00:16like the spotlight is like all on me I'm just excited to show people who I really am
00:33hi pepsters it's me again fk bravo for pep spotlight and joining us today is someone
00:39who has had quite the journey over the past few years she's a filipino beauty queen turned k-pop
00:45idol who became known as Eunice's pink princess after more than two years in South Korea
00:52Jelly Danka is now back home in the Philippines turning the page as a solo artist welcome home
00:58Jelly and congratulations on this new chapter thank you so much I'm so happy to be back
01:03actually yes please greet our pepsters hello pepsters it's Jelly Danka but you can call me Jelly
01:11yeah so I know this is a very fresh transition for you so I want to start there how does
01:17it feel
01:17embarking on this new journey or rather closing that chapter in your career well it's definitely
01:25super like bittersweet because I did make a home in Korea like Philippines will always be like my
01:34number one like my soft spot like home like Tahanan but like Korea like spending so much time there
01:41I made friends and a lot like a lot of memories and I had so much experiences and I feel
01:47like I grew
01:48so much as a person when I said goodbye to the members for the last time it was such a
01:52tearful event
01:53but I trust that we're all headed on a good path and we all know what's best for ourselves so
02:01I'll
02:02support them the whole way yeah we did talk about this earlier like it's even more than foreign exchange
02:08students spending time abroad right that only takes a year and for you it's two and a half years or
02:14more
02:15yeah the way you talk about your stay there it's not just a professional growth but more of a personal
02:20growth as well you talk about the friends you've made there what do you think was the biggest takeaway
02:26you've learned staying there as an artist and also just as a person I feel like living there with
02:35the amount of training that I received and all the change like all the differences that I experienced
02:42it taught me a lot about discipline and growth and just adapting to surroundings that are unusual
02:51how unusual were they super well they weren't unusual well for me they were like I felt sort of
02:58like an alien sort of because because there was a lot of culture shock and like there was stuff like
03:06language barriers that prevented me from like adjusting really like super smoothly into things
03:12yeah but like with the help of the people around me I was able to find my place there thankfully
03:18was it your first time visiting in Korea or was it your first time in Korea when you joined the
03:24competition
03:25it was my first time in Korea when I joined the competition yeah which is insane because I actually I
03:30was planning originally I wanted to go there for my 18th birthday because I was a big fan of like
03:37this
03:37one girl group and I like through them I fell in love with the culture and the aesthetics of it
03:44all and
03:44I just wanted to go there for a vacation for my 18th birthday but surprise surprise at 15 I received
03:50the
03:50audition and I got to fly there like all expenses paid so it was like a miracle for me sort
03:56of yeah so
03:57you went to Korea in advance yes ahead of your ahead of your plan yeah I spent my 16th birthday
04:02there
04:03actually that's so cute yeah 15 in Korea were you alone when you I was with my mom you were
04:10with
04:10your mom yeah um was it everything you imagined Korea because I know it's different for a lot of
04:16people it's like oh I thought it would be no no k-drama effect or something no no I was
04:22super I just
04:23remember being super mesmerized by everything like there's so many plants and like the roads were super
04:28big and it was super clean yes cold too it was cold and like people like the fashion sense over
04:34there was really cool too yeah it was super colorful too and here's something really cute about Korea is
04:39like they they include characters in everything so like if you see taxis like passing by you'll see
04:46like characters on the taxis you'll see huge statues of characters super cute I loved it there
04:53okay and the traffic the traffic I didn't really pay much money because every time we were transporting
04:59somewhere girl I was asleep yeah but transportation there is much better yeah I actually learned how to
05:06commute there oh yeah because like growing up I never really got the chance to go outside yeah so I
05:12would like always like be driven to places so in Korea when I had to live independently that's when I
05:18started like that's when I learned how to like take the bus take the subway yes it was a new
05:23experience for
05:24me too okay well before Eunice there was universe ticket yes and you were competing with a lot of girls
05:32who
05:32already had years of training yeah um well was there ever any part throughout that entire journey where you
05:40thought you know what I might not make it yes really like because it was insane like before I came
05:48before I went there it was just like I didn't really take it seriously because I didn't think it was
05:53gonna be like an actual like survival show like you're you're competing against it's for a debut lineup
05:58girl group production yeah tons of money put into this show judges do this big time yes big time judges
06:06in Korea that I had no I didn't know about
06:09and so I was like it's fine it's gonna be like a pageant I like I like pageants like yeah
06:15it's gonna
06:15be fine no no everyone's taking this seriously girl everyone's had training yeah girl like they because
06:24before we were flown there we were in contact with like writers and the writers would um tell us to
06:32send
06:32and like practice videos of us like of our performances sort of and like during the practice
06:38it's like is it really that serious for me to be practicing all these hours every single day like
06:43should I actually be doing this and like when I went there it was like oh there were cameras all
06:49over the
06:50place the setting was huge and there were so many girls and it was just like why am I here
06:56why am I
06:58this is not my world this is not this is not my field I don't know why I'm here but
07:02like you know
07:03I'm in Korea so I might as well enjoy my time here wow yeah so you learned everything from scratch
07:08the
07:09dancing did you just learn from there yes no because I hated dancing because as as a kid I was
07:16a super
07:17awkward kid like super awkward do everything and like I would I hated being teased and whenever like
07:21I tried to dance I would get teased and like I would never dance again but I had to I
07:26had to for this
07:26this uh this survival show this competition yeah and so but I learned I learned it and um
07:35since I didn't have experience I wasn't really the best in in the show but like you know I just
07:44I just I just made sure to have like fun because like my my goal all the time is to
07:49make the most out
07:51of every experience and just to have fun because that's what I feel like the point of living is
07:56so when I had these dance lessons I I tried to keep up even though like I felt like I
08:01was dragging
08:02everybody down it was super pressuring but like I I knew in the back of my head that dancing would
08:08be a skill that I would learn to enjoy one day it is now it is now it is now
08:12also it never showed
08:14that you were doubtful of yourself yeah you were very confident that's why you mesmerized everyone
08:19really you might not be the best at it at dancing or might not be perfect but you really mesmerized
08:25everyone like your final poses and then the way you pose I'm like girl girl the poses she really
08:32knows herself you know thank you like the poses were were something that I knew that I was good at
08:37so
08:37I was gonna give my all into that at least that's true that's true know your strengths your strengths
08:45wow so but did you expect well what was your reaction you went like from the first stage to
08:50the second level and then wow I'm really saying what was your what was the whole experience like are you
08:57guys sure but also like of course I did like I don't know how I did it but I did
09:04it and like I was just
09:06super grateful all the time because I can't take all the credit you know for my experiences there
09:10because there really were other contestants in the show that helped me and really kind to me like
09:17people who translated things for me and people who like spent like like took the time to actually
09:22help me dance like perform well just for the team to succeed so I'm I was like super duper grateful
09:29yeah so when you finally got in touch with or like when you finally got in the group and then
09:37you're meshing trying to mesh with the with the final members as well how is that experience like
09:42walk us through the first few weeks oh my gosh as a group in all honesty we didn't always get
09:51along
09:52not like we do today yeah because you know like what I mentioned like culture shock and language barriers
09:58it made like it wasn't easy for us to communicate thoroughly with each other and there was also
10:06like everybody was still in the mindset that like we came from a survival show yeah yeah you're all in
10:13the competition yeah like like other groups maybe they their companies are like like formed from
10:20from people who chose members and like they see their training together yeah training together seeing their
10:25chemistry you know spending time together going through the same things together but us like we
10:30were in different teams for a survival show so like I think it was still in the back of our
10:36minds that
10:37we wanted like to shine in our own ways and it was so like there was like competitive undertones almost
10:45but only because everybody was just trying to make like an image for themselves but that was like before
10:53we started to spend more time with each other and just got closer and like the the more that the
11:00foreign members learned korean that became like our mutual language and it came to the point where we
11:06were able to joke with the other members and we were able to laugh a lot together and like we
11:10love each
11:11other so much now like we are like eight sisters i love them to death but you know what that's
11:17canon
11:17that's not that's not like an isolated case because a lot of girl groups were also or who also came
11:23from
11:24survival shows also feel the same way they're kind of like competitive the first few months yeah i mean
11:29you can't blame them exactly that's the environment that you guys are fighting for that spot yeah yeah
11:35they that's what we got used to yeah now living there were there times when you felt homesick and how
11:42did you deal with that oh my god yeah there were they definitely were times when i was super homesick
11:49and
11:50it just with like the pressure of it all like like super like harsh training and not understanding
12:01anything or anyone i i feel like i i remember just being super sad all the time and you can
12:08you
12:08could see it in my eyes when you look at folks you can see how sad and tired i was
12:12i'm sad i want to go
12:13home i miss my mom so like i called my parents every like i call my parents every day that
12:18just got me
12:19through things and i was genuinely i was genuinely really happy whenever i saw the fans because they
12:25really served as a reminder for what i was there for like what i fought for in the very beginning
12:32yeah yeah so i i can relate to being homesick because i was also shipped off from my hometown
12:38when i went to college and then the first week i was away from home i was like i was
12:43in the shower
12:44and immediately like tears start falling i just felt homesick but i can't imagine moving to another
12:49country what did you miss the most about the philippines at the time i missed like definitely the
12:54people because everybody's so warm and i i knew what they were saying it was like to the point
13:01you understand everyone yeah i understood everyone like i didn't i didn't it was such an unusual like
13:06interesting experience because whenever we would come back to the philippines for like maybe a
13:10performance or concert like i would listen to like the conversations around me like i understand them
13:16i understand everything they're saying and like i missed the food oh the definitely what's your
13:23favorite filipino food i love i love turon turon the street food yeah okay i like it doesn't matter i
13:33love home-cooked meals is what made yeah it's what made it special to me yeah yeah it's so different
13:39but yeah you just look for it i mean it doesn't even matter who's cooking it like for me if
13:45it's just
13:45if it's a filipino mom or a filipino lola yeah i'm sure i'll enjoy the food yeah yeah every like
13:53because almost every day in korea they would order us food it would just be delivery and i actually heard
14:01that there was like a restaurant for filipino food in korea i was supposed to go there with another like
14:07the other filipino member alicia yeah we never had the time oh yeah but it's okay it's you're booked and
14:15busy and we're booked and busy yeah okay well looking back at the jelly who first entered universe
14:20ticket what would you tell her now trust yourself more because like thinking about it now just things
14:31always went well for me back then even though i didn't know anything that was going on like i was
14:38sleepy i didn't understand what people were saying things just kept it just kept working out for me and i
14:44feel like at the time even though i was super confident and thing and stuff there was still
14:50like a thought in the back of my mind it was like do i even belong here because like she
14:54has no idea
14:56how comfortable she was gonna get like as time went on like the closer she got with the members the
15:04more
15:04used to training and performing she got she found her place in korea and she can even call her second
15:10home now
15:11yeah that's so sweet how do you shut that voice up that doubt or telling you you know what you
15:17might
15:17mess up or something i watch fan edits of me oh and read fan letters because like the the most
15:29precious
15:30thing i feel like a fan can give to a celebrity is a letter you know like not ones that
15:36are like generated by
15:37chat gpt but like something that was genuinely poured out from your heart mormon yeah yeah
15:44you know because the way i discovered you i mean i found out about you on tiktok i was really
15:49i really i understood why people were hyping you up and what yes because you look like an actual barbie
15:57doll that was that was you know i forgot the song but it was a trend you were doing a
16:01trend and i was
16:04oh she's filipino she's from this group and then i i went on a deep dive so that's how i
16:11found out
16:12thank you but yeah you're doing so well thank you so yeah give yourself credit give yourself grace
16:18you're doing really really well thank you um so we also know i want to backtrack a little bit before
16:24k-pop you were also in pageantry yes how much do you think being a beauty queen influenced the artist
16:30that
16:30you are today starting off with when i went to the survival show i had like the sort of the
16:36mindset
16:37of like a beauty queen it's like you just have to show people you're confident you know what you're
16:41made of and like also when like even though it's a competition you shouldn't try to beat try to beat
16:48your like the other like oh yeah uh competitors you should like focus on yourself you know know your
16:55know your strengths like you said and just like trust that things will go
17:02according to what's right for you at the end of the day yeah and because you've put in the effort
17:07too
17:08yeah right so whatever happens after you've done your best yeah you have done your best
17:13if you know in your heart that you put the effort and you love what you're doing and you're just
17:21making the most of every step then you have nothing to fear nothing to regret you know you
17:26know what i see that remains in you and that i can tell she probably has a background in pageantry
17:32you're very elegant and poised really yeah like even your viral poses right they always said this
17:39is the jelly pose with the leg thing oh yeah okay she's very elegant and then i looked you up
17:47you're
17:47very young i thought wow how did you develop that pose so of course pageantry pageantry yeah yeah
17:54well thank god for that one thing i remember my mom telling me was like look for a way to
17:59stand out
18:00look for a way to show who you are without you know without trying to dim other people's light
18:08oh and for me it was like just being my art there like being like my poise you know like
18:13that but
18:14that's so cute you're so cute i mean because they come from a time where they they they um they
18:20shun people who are maarte but now it's good that they're celebrating it i mean right wrong
18:27it's not wrong if you're not harming anybody yeah god forbid that could be a little feminine yeah
18:33exactly i guess the best next question is do you see yourself going back to pageantry will we see you
18:40anytime soon well right now i i'm just focusing on like growing as an artist like a solo artist but
18:48i wouldn't close the door i wouldn't close the door to pageantry yes you guys just stay tuned okay
18:54i have a lot of things in store for you okay yeah okay now we've dug up some old instagram
19:01posts of
19:02yours oh my there's one where you said the caption is we are all born beautiful
19:09the greatest tragedy is being convinced we are not oh i found i think i found that quote on like
19:17a
19:17tiktok post or something i was like wow that's so true it's just it's it is true like we are
19:25all born
19:25beautiful and it's just it's just the standards that we make today that like shapes our opinion on
19:32like ourselves and other people because with the things you see online and with people sharing their
19:39own opinions on things of what they think is pretty or what's not pretty it it influences you more than
19:48you think that's true and i just feel like we really are like we're all beautiful we're all born beautiful
19:57it's just no like no one is better than somebody else it's just we're all different we all have
20:05different experiences we're all we all have different features we all have different
20:10pasts and beliefs and morals it's just important to focus on yourself and like you know do what's
20:20what suits you and what's best for you and like you shouldn't have to try to look
20:25a way that is not that looks completely different from who you originally are
20:31yeah and if you're suffering in the process then then stop it like just do anything that will make
20:37you happy yeah yeah i mean it's like obviously if you have the means and there's a part of yourself
20:46that you want to improve by all means do it but you shouldn't beat yourself up for not looking
20:50that's true a way that you don't like you know you should still learn to love yourself in a way
20:56yes yeah this beauty queen yeah because at least you won't be changing yourself yeah out of
21:02out of like hatred for who you originally were at least it'll be like sort of like a gift to
21:07yourself
21:07more than something that you feel like should have been what was there originally in the first place
21:14that makes sense yeah that makes sense yeah but also i keep reminding myself you're you're very young
21:21so for you to have already have this mindset is is huge because i mean this insecurity i know that
21:29it fades away as you age as you get old but i know it's very hard for people who are
21:33your age for girls
21:34yes insecurity is yeah uh it will really keep you up at night so it's uh congratulations that you've um
21:42you know you you already have this secure mindset of your you know secure um thoughts thank you so much
21:51it's just like i i know what it is to feel that way especially like in quarantine the internet was
22:00like what people turn to the most that's true because yeah no one can go out yeah and i was
22:04like
22:05i was like a teenage like a young teenage girl yeah and there was just so much so much stuff
22:12online
22:12that made me look at the mirror and and be like why don't why don't i look like that like
22:17why why can't
22:19i think like that it's just i hate i hate that like looking back on it i never want any
22:24other anyone
22:25else to experience that so as much as possible i create like a like an image of myself that encourages
22:31people to be happy with who they are yeah that's really nice that's why i i also tell people um
22:38maybe practice social media diet because like the more you consume things from social media it's just
22:44it's gonna mess up your head yeah detox you know like go outside take a walk you know like hug
22:49your
22:50dog or something yeah because the more i go outside the more you see different types of beauty yeah
22:55the more you feel you know i should celebrate myself too because everyone looks different the world's not
23:00gonna end if you like close your phone for like five minutes that's true yeah that's true because
23:05almost all people on social media are templated they kind of yeah follow this this is the beauty
23:12standard yeah and you don't see everything people only upload what they want you to see that's true
23:17that's really important what did beauty mean to you before and what does beauty mean to you now
23:24i feel like beauty to me like before was like more on what was on the inside and it still
23:36is now but
23:37like beauty to me now is like like thinking about it more it's diverse and there's just so
23:46much more to it than how you look like or how people perceive you yeah beauty can be
23:56like beauty can be in the feeling that people have when being around you which is something that i think
24:02people should work on more yeah people should work on becoming somebody that makes other people feel
24:08lighter that's very underrated by the way yeah no because the world would just be so much better if
24:15we all just got along guys that's like that's to put a blanket over in yeah okay well um can
24:24we talk
24:24about uh life or experiences about dating or having romantic relationships i know i know i have stuff to
24:35you you don't have time i don't have time for i don't have time for that like i don't have
24:39the energy
24:40for that because i feel like it would also be unfair if i ever dated anybody at this point of
24:46your life
24:47yeah like i have had crushes but like i feel like it wouldn't be fair if i dated someone because
24:54and just give like 10 percent yeah because yeah because i feel like if i were in a relationship
25:00i would have standards but with where i am now and my schedule oh my god i couldn't even reach
25:06those standards myself so i'm sorry you're gonna have to wait yeah these are your how young are you
25:12now you're just 19 19 these are your building years yeah so yeah i i can imagine even if jelly
25:20wanted to
25:21date she can she can't her time won't allow it i can't i'm sorry i'm sorry not really now that
25:29you're
25:29officially a solo artist what are you most excited to explore that you couldn't necessarily show as a
25:36member of a group okay so the thing is being like knowing what suits me in a girl group is
25:45really
25:45different from knowing what suits me as a solo artist and now that i have like like the spotlight is
25:54like all on me yeah it's just like i'm really excited to know more about myself too and like
26:05as i explore promoting and like doing projects on my own it's just like growing as an artist as well
26:14as
26:14like balancing things like my studies this is like a really big priority for me and i'm just excited to
26:22show people who i really am now that their attention is on me so you guys should look
26:28forward to what i have in store for you and maybe the creative freedom too yeah the creative freedom
26:33now because it's just you right because like in a group you'd have to take into consideration what
26:40yes could also work for like not just you but the whole group what they'd be comfortable with what
26:46not be comfortable yeah and what their fans want too yeah but now that i don't like i my only
26:52concern
26:52is what my fans want it's like it's also super exciting because like i've always wanted to like
26:59take creative direction with things like that so i feel like the experience is going to help me
27:07develop a lot more as an artist you're still in school you went back to school i actually
27:14am looking to go like online online yes yes yes yeah what what um what course would you take
27:24what course it used to be communications because i wanted to just be in the industry like maybe as a
27:29host or like a weather person but like i feel like maybe performing arts yeah i'm also thinking about
27:36music production i don't know yet yeah well a lot of options yeah there's a lot of options um so
27:44now
27:44that you've started working is there anything you're saving up for saving up for like an investment or are
27:51you saving up for a house maybe or a car what are you saving what would you say you're saving
27:56up for now
27:57saving up for
28:01because
28:04i never really thought of that i mean like there's like a lot of things that i want to buy
28:10like financial stability is also like a goal for me like further on into my career there's a lot of
28:16things i want to do i want to volunteer i want to i want to like help my family yeah
28:22you know
28:23and i'm also at the age where you you get your own apartment yeah because i live with my family
28:31and i'm not complaining about that it's just like am i supposed to be saving up for my own
28:36apartment right now for your own place well you're gonna be whiplashed by the difference you'll be like
28:42oh i need to take care of bills yes things are just moving so fast yeah so but maybe we'll
28:48get there
28:49soon we'll we'll we'll get there discussions will be made yes yeah it's nice you brought up
28:56financial stability because a lot of um younger stars or you know pop stars or celebrities they don't
29:03really think that that early on in their career they just realized oh they're 40 and they haven't
29:08saved up anything so it's nice you're thinking about yeah that now would you say you're a saver
29:14yeah like i i like save a certain like i like in my car i like there's an amount that
29:20i risk
29:21the refuse to go under so like the rest of them i indulge because you know i earn my money
29:27i should
29:28like have fun but like work hard play hard yeah work hard play hard but like you know set it
29:33set
29:34some stuff aside for the future that's true just in case that's true emergency fun or you'd never know
29:40yeah now as um as um an artist as a solo artist who are the ones you look up to
29:47and who are your
29:48dream what are your dream collaborations ah for my like my role model she's not she's not an artist
29:56but she's an influencer her name is tam core and i watch her videos every single day like i've been
30:03watching her since i was every single day every yeah like when i was getting ready doing my makeup i
30:08was
30:08watching her vlog yeah i just look up to her so much because i was watching her i started watching
30:14her at 15 years old and she's like she's really big on self-growth and self-improvement and the way
30:21she talks about things it's just always such it's like so optimistic she's so optimistic and she's sort
30:28of like a workaholic in a way that she makes it look fun and with like the things that are
30:35coming for me
30:35i feel like i'm gonna have to embody her mm-hmm like like emulate her yeah her her spear like
30:42just her
30:42like like navigating through my like things in my solo career mm-hmm and as for collaborations
30:51i am gonna have to mention my ates and beanie go we actually wow because we we did a cover
30:59that is
31:00something for our for one of our concerts concerts in the philippines yeah we prepared a cover song
31:07we did their pan tropical on stage and people loved that and i loved that it was so much fun
31:14and it's just it would be nice if we collaborated it would be nice it would be nice hi athens
31:21for but like in for for international international artists i am a big fan of cat's eye and i love
31:31my
31:31ate sophia to pieces yeah she's so wise and beautiful mm-hmm and just everything about her just mesmerizes
31:39me but also there's this other pop indie artist that me and my brother like his name is grant paris
31:46and he's like in the wet he's like a western artist but he is benoy oh yeah i love his
31:52music so much i
31:53think if i collaborated with him i would explode yeah well let's put that into the universe manifest it
32:02well that's so cool jelly um how about um when it comes to your music direction or your style
32:11is there any inspo from like what your inspo you know i actually discuss things with the people who
32:23manage me and the first i showed them like sort of sort of like super western like mature concepts and
32:30oh mature concept we're like oh you're kind of like yeah you're kind of fresh from you so maybe
32:36let's do that a little later yeah maybe a little later down the line yeah so i guess like mute
32:44like
32:44style is probably uh bubblegum pink probably bubblegum like kind of like like like eyelet okay yes i love
32:56them so much you know like we debuted almost the same time and it was so like i was starstruck
33:03when
33:03yeah i saw them in person oh yeah yeah like eyelet music is just so like sparkly and like
33:11sometimes it's like super gentle yeah it's like i think that their genre is kind of like
33:16well it's bubblegum music but it's also clean music yeah it's like clean yeah but like lately they've been
33:22like doing oh yeah they've been experimenting yes like super so probably that route first
33:29before the mature ones they view their debut era yeah the mature ones can wait the mature concepts can
33:37wait yeah but it's so funny you brought that up with your team like i can only imagine their their
33:45shock oh wow really going solo yeah well um so you've gone from pageant girl to universe ticket to
33:57eunice and now a solo artist when you look at that journey what do you think has remained the same
34:04about
34:04jelly through all those different chapters i think that i'm still the same jelly that isn't afraid to dream
34:13big who is always confident who wants to spread like like uplift others too i feel like i'm really
34:21i'm really proud of myself for for like having the heart to like just look out for other girls because
34:28because that's that's that's what girlhood is because i feel like we should be there for each other
34:32to like just lift each other up and to make it no like hype each other up because it's such
34:37a good feeling
34:38to be supported by people even if even if you barely know them i i never hold back from like
34:45complimenting someone yeah because i know i can make somebody's day right it can make someone's day
34:51just make people happy you know like spread love and light that's always been my goal from the very
34:55beginning yeah i remember just one girl stopping me on the street and saying i like your lip shade oh
35:01my
35:01god and that's that just that just made my day i was like whoa it changes how you see yourself
35:06in the
35:07mirror too it's like like just some compliments here and there yeah i'm all for for positivity uh-huh yeah
35:16okay well that's it for me thank you so much jelly so sure so much so much so much from
35:24you and we look
35:24forward to your journey as a solo artist we know we can look forward to a lot because we've seen
