00:00After World War II, the world took a historic step toward peace.
00:04In 1945, after years of devastating war,
00:08nations around the world faced a difficult question –
00:11how could another global conflict be prevented?
00:15On October 24, 1945, the United Nations officially came into existence
00:22when its founding charter took effect.
00:25This marked a major moment in international history.
00:28The organisation was created to encourage cooperation between countries,
00:33maintain international peace and security, protect human rights,
00:37and support efforts to solve global problems through dialogue.
00:42The idea had emerged during World War II when Allied leaders recognised the need
00:47for a stronger international organisation than the League of Nations,
00:51which had failed to prevent another world war.
00:54The UN began with 51 member countries and later expanded as more nations joined.
01:02Its work has included peacekeeping missions, humanitarian assistance,
01:07support for refugees, and international development.
01:11Although conflicts have continued, the United Nations remains an important forum
01:16where countries can discuss disputes and seek solutions.
