01:37Yeah, absolutely.
01:38Next time you're at Country Fair, see if you can grab a glove.
01:41I think possibly.
01:42You might get a thick ear for doing that.
01:44Now then, Martin Hurst is back with us, Rachel, who actually was given a bit of a fright.
01:52Slightly, yeah.
01:52Just slightly.
01:53But you came through with one of the fastest conundrums.
01:57Tremendously fast.
01:58Well done.
01:58Insurance document writer from Ash Vale in Surrey.
02:02Five wins under your belt.
02:03And you're joined by Yvonne Endicott, a retired post office manager from Ampton in Bedfordshire.
02:09You used to have a pet tortoise called Houdini.
02:12But you told me the most wonderful story about your Turkish holiday.
02:16We got to Turkey late at night, so we all got into our hotel room and closed the curtains.
02:23Didn't really know what was outside.
02:25Went to sleep.
02:26We were woken up really early, about six o'clock in the morning.
02:29This noise that we had never heard before.
02:32It kept going on and on.
02:34So we opened the curtains and there was a flat-roofed apartment next to our hotel.
02:40And there was a camel on the roof.
02:42Peering through your window.
02:44Almost.
02:45Extraordinary.
02:45Yeah.
02:46That's where they kept it at night.
02:48Brilliant stuff.
02:49Well, good luck, Yvonne.
02:51Good luck, Martin.
02:51Big round of applause for today's contestants.
02:56What a lovely story.
02:58Imagine that.
02:58Good holiday story, that one.
03:00And welcome back to Gloria Honeford, of course, known for 40 years now and has been doing so
03:06much on television these days.
03:08Your rip-off Britain's running at the moment.
03:10Yes.
03:11Well, it has been actually running at prime time.
03:13We started to make it for daytime nine years ago, believe it or not.
03:17And the reason I always say that it worked so well, because first of all, it came in just
03:22before the recession, actually.
03:24And so everybody felt they were being ripped off anyway.
03:26And because it's presented by three girls of a certain age, we think that we have the
03:32believability and credibility.
03:34But I think if you'd given it to three 25-year-olds, it wouldn't have the same gravitas, because
03:38we've been round the block, et cetera.
03:40And you hear some very tragic stories.
03:42But also from us, I think, good warnings about how to avoid scams and not get caught up.
03:47Absolutely.
03:48No, it does a good public service, actually.
03:50I think it does, actually.
03:51I'm sure of it.
03:51Yes, thank you.
03:52Brilliant.
03:53And Susie too, welcome back as ever, as ever.

13:54Well done.
13:55Well done.
13:59Well done, indeed.
14:00Actually, Rachel, Martin's red hot on the numbers, you know.
14:04I don't think he's failed yet, has he?
14:06No, he's been very, very well.
14:08Now then, Gloria, you've had a smiling all week.
14:12You've got the smiling all the time, actually.
14:14What have you got for us today?
14:15Well, another silly story, really, from Ireland.
14:17We're talking about numbers.
14:18So we're now in Ireland racing.
14:21Horse racing is very, very popular there.
14:23And this chap from the north, who actually would be a Northern Ireland Protestant going
14:28into a Catholic area, I'll tell you that for a reason.
14:31And he's not very good at betting and everything, but he sees this priest.
14:36And it's a week-long meeting.
14:37And every day, he watched the priest.
14:39And the first day, he watched him.
14:40And he saw the priest pick up a load of dosh.
14:43The next day, he watched the priest again.
14:45And the priest was whispering into the horse's ear.
14:48So he thought, I know what I'll do.
14:49So he put his money on number six or whatever it was.
14:52Sure enough, along with the priest, he won all the money.
14:56Next day, same thing.
14:57Saw the priest whispering again.
14:59And this time, number 10, in purple.
15:01Right, put the bet on.
15:02Scooped in all the money.
15:04And he thought, this is fantastic.
15:05I can't fail at this.
15:07Your man's got a line to these horses, you know.
15:09And so it got to the very last day.
15:11And he thought, it's been so successful.
15:13He said, I'm going to watch the priest whispering.
15:15I'm going to put all my money on this number.
15:18So sure enough, he saw the priest whispering away.
15:20And this day, the horse just about limped home.
15:23I mean, it was last in the field.
15:25And he went up to the priest afterwards and said, I don't get it.
15:27All week, you've been whispering.
15:29And all week, you've been winning.
15:30And the last day, you lose.
15:32And I said, that's the problem with you boys from the north, you Protesters from the north.
15:36You don't know the difference between a prayer and the last rites.
15:47That's very good.
15:48That's very good.
15:50All right.
15:5047 to 30, if on or on 30.
15:53And it's Martin's letters.

24:00Martin, six, six, Yvonne, I'll risk a seven, Martin, magpie, Yvonne, Endicott, moppage,
24:12moppage, moppage, you're a gambler, I know, I've got to, oh, and I don't blame you,
24:20because you can stickage that suffix onto so many words, unfortunately, in the dictionary, mop isn't one of them, I'm
24:26afraid, I'm sorry, no moppage.
24:29There you go, good sport, though. Now, Susie, it's your origins of words, with the score standing 83 to 52,
24:37Susie.
24:38Well, David Baddiel has an excellent series on Radio 4, which is David Baddiel tries to understand, and he takes
24:44a particular subject that people have suggested to him that they absolutely cannot understand,
24:48and then he goes out, tries to get to grips with the subject, and will then come back and try
24:53to explain it to the person who asked about it in the first place.
24:56And I asked him about the US presidential election, because I find it so Byzantine and almost impossible to understand.
25:05And we started talking about the language of the elections, of course, we've got one coming up in November,
25:11and caucus is one that always sort of gets people slightly puzzled.
25:15They are local meetings at which party members express their preference for the presidential nominee.
25:23The story goes that a short time before the revolution, the caucus of Boston, this is C-A-U-L
25:29-K-E-R-S,
25:30they were the people who corked or waterproofed the harbour's boats and ships, had a heated dispute with some British
25:36soldiers,
25:38and there were a number of fatalities amongst them, particularly amongst the harbour workers.
25:43And apparently secret meetings were held later that day at the caucus' houses to decide on what punishment they would
25:49mete out to these British soldiers.
25:51And the sound similarity between caucus and caucus makes you think, caucus rather, makes you think that's why it's called
25:57the so-called secret meeting.
25:59The dates, unfortunately, so far are against it, and it's more likely it comes from a North American Indian term,
26:05believe it or not,
26:07which meant one who urges or encourages, which is, of course, what these party members are doing.
26:12They're encouraging a presidential nominee.
26:15And there's so much of English, not just American English, but British English, as well as full of words from
26:21North American English.
26:22So the obvious ones like tomahawk or totem or caribou, etc.
26:27But caucus and caucus, not so obvious.
26:30But yes, lovely to think it goes back to a revolutionary dispute, but more likely to go back to the
26:35Algonquian Indians.
26:37Brilliant. Thank you so much.
26:38Well done.
26:42The Algonquian Indians, indeed.
26:4383 plays 52.
26:45Martin on 83.

28:06Usually in the plural, but you can have it in the singular.
28:09A remote foreign territory.
28:12Which is why outlandish originally meant the barbarians.
28:17Very good.
28:18Now then, Gloria.
28:19Yes, possibly a hand item.
28:21Yeah, that's a good one.
28:22That's there for seven as well.
28:24So, Martin, final letters game.

30:00Yvonne, final numbers game for you. Good luck.
30:03Can I have two large, please, Rachel?
30:05You can indeed, thank you, Yvonne.
30:07Two large, four little, for the final one of the day.
30:09And these numbers are seven, eight, four, one,
30:15and a large two, 75 and 25.
30:18And the target, 771.
30:20One, seven, seven, one.
30:22MUSIC CONTINUES
30:53Yes, Yvonne.
30:53I didn't quite get near enough.
30:56No?
30:57Martin?
30:58No, I've gone wrong as well.
30:59Sorry.
31:01Neither of you?
31:02Rachel, help us, please.
31:04Yep.
31:05If you say 75 times 8 is 600,
31:1025 times 7 is 175,
31:13add them together and take away the four.
31:16Oh, well done.
31:16Well done, Rachel.
31:20Well done, Rachel.
31:22So, Martin on 97.
31:25Hasn't cracked 100, Yvonne, and that's down to you.
31:28You're on 59.
31:29Well done.
31:30Yes, true.
31:30So, fingers on buzzers, Martin and Yvonne.
31:33Let's roll today's countdown conundrum.
31:38Yes, Martin?
31:40Ludicrous.
31:41Ludicrous.
31:41You're so good at this.
31:43So good.
31:44Ludicrous.
31:45Let's see.
31:46There it is.
31:47Well done.
31:54107, Martin.
31:56Well done.
31:56Yvonne Endicott, you did brilliantly.
31:59You did.
32:00Because I tell you what, he's been sweeping all before him,
32:03but he had to put up with you for quite a long time.
32:05So, well done.
32:06Good 59.
32:07And back to Amphill.
32:10Yes.
32:10Brilliant.
32:10With this goodie bag.
32:12Oh, thank you.
32:12And next time you're in Milton Keynes and you spot me,
32:16come and say hello.
32:17I will.
32:17Take me for a coffee.
32:18I will.
32:19Please.
32:19Yeah.
32:19All right.
32:20Well done.
32:21Great stuff.
32:22Great stuff.
32:22That's six wins.
32:24Wow.
32:25Not bad.
32:26Well done indeed.
32:27See you tomorrow.
32:28Now, Gloria, you and I are of a certain age.
32:31We are indeed.
32:31Pretty much the same.
32:32And we are the target of some rotten scamsters.
32:36We are.
32:37What makes me really sad when we come across the cases on Rip Up Britain
32:40is in the main, the scammers do target people even older than you and me.
32:47And they see vulnerability.
32:48They see people living on their own.
32:50And they hone in on that.
32:52And just as you think that we've had enough warnings about scams and that we're pretty aware
32:56of them all, the scammers are so sophisticated these days and so clever that they're sort of
33:01like one ahead, you know, of everybody else.
33:04And in the series coming up, there's one example of a woman having lost 90,000 pounds.
33:09And of course, when you say to people, when you look back, how do you feel about, you know,
33:15feeling ridiculous or stupid even, you know, about going down this line?
33:18And many, many people will say, but, you know, they were so nice and they were so clever
33:22and they were very helpful, et cetera.
33:24I think the big, big rule is if somebody rings you up with an investment opportunity
33:30and you don't know them, you put the phone down.
33:32Don't get involved.
33:33Because they'll talk you into it.
33:34And the old additive, it seems, you know, too good to be true.
33:38It is.
33:39Absolutely.
33:39Spot on.
33:40See you tomorrow.
33:40See you tomorrow.
33:41See you tomorrow, Susie.
33:42See you tomorrow, Nick.
33:43Well done.
33:44And watch your bank cards.
33:45I saw a brilliant story last month in the papers of, um, they tried to steal an old lady's
33:50card in a supermarket in Salford and she beat them round the head with a packet of bacon.
33:56And they ran away.
33:57So well done to that lady.
33:59Absolutely.
33:59Brilliant.
34:00See you tomorrow.
34:00See you tomorrow.
34:01See you tomorrow.
34:02Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
34:05But join us tomorrow, same time, same place, you'll be sure of it.

34:29Teenage life isn't what it used to be.
34:30People used to be able to hide from the dangers of the world in their homes.
34:33But now with the internet, it's not that easy.
34:35999, watch your emergency at 9, followed by one off drama about, well, the perils of
34:41teenage life.
34:42I guess putting those two together makes a lot of sense.
34:44Ellen at 10.
34:45All right.
34:51You
