00:31Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:34Now, there's a lot of activity north of the border,
00:36particularly around Scone Palace up in Persia there,
00:41because tomorrow, Rewind Scotland,
00:43the great 80s festival of music,
00:46opens its gates and Saturday and Sunday,
00:50all the big bands, the big hair bands of those days,
00:53will be performing, people like Adamant, Toya, ABC to Go West.
00:58I thought, 80s music, well, I was blessed,
01:02because when I was a young chap, it was in the 60s,
01:06and I would argue with anybody
01:08that the 60s was just the best time for popular music.
01:12Rachel, I'm not a great...
01:13I'm not very knowledgeable, to be quite frank with you,
01:16about popular music, but I do know that we had a ball.
01:20The Stones, the Beatles and so on and on and on.
01:22We were very lucky.
01:23How about you? You were born in the 80s.
01:26How do you rate 80s music?
01:28I think it's always the generation when you're kind of teenage
01:31that you go for the most,
01:33so I'd definitely pick the 90s out of my favourite era.
01:35We went to a 90s night, my girlfriends and I,
01:37a couple of years ago.
01:38Hadn't heard songs for, like, 15 years,
01:40and you still know all the words to these, like,
01:42bewitched Backstreet Boys, Boy Zone,
01:45and Spice Girls, 20 years ago.
01:47How can it be that long?
01:48They were good at the time.
01:49Indeed they were.
01:50Now, who have we got with us?
01:51Aidan Lynch is back with us.
01:53Fantastic outing.
01:54First time yesterday, you came in with a bruising 106 points.
01:59Well done.
01:59Well done.
02:00Good to see you back.
02:01Student from Thetford in Norfolk,
02:02ready to go to Sussex, I think, to study politics.
02:05Is that right?
02:05Yep.
02:06So you're going to go and learn all about the political systems
02:09around the world, and good luck to you.
02:11You're joined by Kieran Duffy.
02:13Kieran's a secondary school maths teacher
02:15from Kilcock in County Kildare.
02:18Loves choral singing.
02:19Once was a member of the, indeed, was the conductor
02:22of the Mnouf Chamber Choir, and you've been a member
02:25of many choirs.
02:26I have, indeed.
02:27Brilliant stuff.
02:27And your favourite film is the biopic of the Irish political leader
02:32back in the 20s, Michael Collins.
02:35What was it about Michael Collins that particularly appealed to you?
02:38I suppose it just gets the hairs on the back of your neck
02:41standing up when you think about what some Irish men and women
02:43had to go through for their independence
02:45and to fight for their freedom.
02:47Indeed.
02:48Well, you're very welcome here, Rhett.
02:49Kieran and Aidan, let's have a big round of applause
02:52for our contestants today.
02:58And in the corner of Susie, of course, joined once again
03:01by football pundit, but more importantly, really,
03:05one of the great England goalkeepers, I think,
03:07played 53 times for England, none other than David James.
03:11Welcome back, David.
03:12Thank you very much.
03:12Welcome back.
03:17Now then, Aidan, you've cut your teeth on your first,

12:02No, just a four, I'm afraid.
12:04And your four?
12:05Hole.
12:07Now, what's this risk we're talking about?
12:09Exhaler.
12:10And I've just noticed I need two E's, so don't worry.
12:14Yeah, it's actually not there anyway.
12:16I don't know if that makes you feel better.
12:18Probably not.
12:19Now then, can we beat the four?
12:22Susie, you have a nice word, don't you?
12:24It is a nice one, yeah.
12:25It's from South America.
12:26It comes from Spanish, and it's Llanero, L-L-A-N-E-R-O,
12:31and it is an inhabitant of Llanero, which is a treeless plain,
12:37grassy plain in South America.
12:39And this Llanero would be one who works as a cowboy.
12:43Llanero.
12:44Yeah.
12:45How interesting.
12:46Very good.
12:4732 to Kieran's 14, and now it's numbers time.
12:52Kieran.
12:52Could I have one from the top, please, and any other five?
12:55You can indeed, thank you, Kieran.
12:56One large.
12:57Five little.
12:58And these five little ones are nine, three, five, seven, and seven.
13:06And the big one, 75.
13:08And the target, 223.
13:10Two, two, three.
13:11Three, four, five, five, six.
13:43Yes, Kieran?
13:44Yes, 2-2-3.
13:46And Aidan?
13:472-2-3.
13:48Kieran?
13:5075 times 3.
13:512-2-5.
13:52And 7 minus 5 is 2.
13:54Nice and straightforward.
13:55Yep, 2-2-3.
13:56Aidan?
13:56Exactly the same way.
13:58All right.
13:59Great.
14:00All right.
14:01So.
14:0442 plays Kieran's 24 as we turn to David.
14:08And David, you know, being part of a team has got to be a lot of fun, a wonderful experience.
14:14But sometimes tricks get played, particularly amongst a crowd of young guys.
14:20And you had one such experience, I'm told.
14:22Yes, thanks for bringing that up.
14:23Yes.
14:25Yeah, team is very important.
14:26You trust your teammates.
14:28They're the guys who have your back, especially when you're playing for England, because the amount of pressure that the
14:35public put on you, the media put on you,
14:38everybody puts on you.
14:39So, you know, if your teammate's going to help you out, then he's the man you look to.
14:45And I'd recently set up a foundation in Malawi.
14:48And one of my advisors, one of my helpers, had said that there was an opportunity for someone to donate
14:55some money if I went along to an art gallery and did some stuff, whatever it was.
14:59Yeah.
14:59So I thought, yeah, that's good.
15:01The whole family came down.
15:03I'd also been recently looking in a lot of art magazines and seen a few sort of exclusive exhibits, exhibitions
15:11and whatever else.
15:13And I walked into this art gallery.
15:15First thing I saw on a wall was something that featured in one of these magazines.
15:18So I thought, yes, legitimate gallery.
15:21So, you know, no problems.
15:23I'm walking around.
15:24The guy's talking to me.
15:25And I'm trying to get onto the conversation of how are you going to help my foundation.
15:29But this guy kept avoiding that situation and showed me around the gallery a little bit more.
15:35And he explained to me there was this almost priceless vase, strangely positioned near the middle of the room without
15:43any protection.
15:44But I thought, that's nice.
15:47Wasn't that impressed.
15:49Anyway, we had a quick photograph next to this priceless vase, which somehow managed to fall on the floor and
15:55smash.
15:58A horrified audience, if you like, including some young lady who decided to have a go at me for some
16:05reason.
16:05I was like, hang on, what's going on here?
16:07This isn't right.
16:07This isn't right.
16:08Looking at the family, you know, what's going on?
16:10What's going on?
16:11And then I thought, I've got to get out of there.
16:13And then Rio decided to turn up and tell me that I'd been pranked.
16:19Oh, dear.
16:20Yeah.
16:21And it was, you know, the foundation of our relationship changed slightly after that.
16:25And I've actually, I think it was about ten years ago now, and I've been looking for an opportunity to
16:30get him back.
16:30To get him back.
16:31Get him back.
16:32You'll get him back.
16:33I will one day.
16:34You'll get him back.
16:35Well done.
16:35Lovely story.
16:36Now, a wicked prank.
16:42All right.
16:4342 plays.

19:40Fireman, indeed.
19:41Yes.
19:42Yes.
19:42Very good.
19:43Anything else, Susie?

21:11Eddie Grant sang about this quick and witty reply.
21:31warm welcome back.
21:33I left with the clue, Eddie Grant sang about this quick and witty reply.
21:37Of course, the answer is come back.

23:05Grope?
23:05Yeah.
23:06Grope?
23:07Yes.
23:08What else can we have?
23:09Well, I know you have been in one of these, or are familiar with one of these.
23:13That's a pirogue.
23:13Those are those hollowed-out tree trunks used as canoes.
23:16Yes.
23:17You have been in one of those, haven't you?
23:18I have, actually, yeah.

24:40David?
24:41Well, I had prove.
24:43Yes.
24:44But Susie has permute.
24:46What is permute?
24:48If you work back from permutation, permutation is a change, and to permute is to submit to
24:53a process of alteration.
24:54I think it's used in technology more than in general life.
24:58Thank you very much, you chaps.
25:00And it's 77 to 34, and it's Susie's Origins of Words.
25:05Susie, what have you got for us today?
25:07Well, I think you remember, Nick, I've talked before about the unusual origin of the word
25:11hearse.
25:12because slightly morbid beginning, but the hearse looks back to a harrow in Roman times
25:19that was known as a herpex, and it was like a rake with teeth.
25:24In fact, the ultimate origin is a very ancient word meaning wolf, because the teeth of a rake look like
25:29the teeth of a wolf.
25:30And that was transferred to a hearse and eventually a coffin because of the frames that were put on top
25:36of the coffins or hearses to carry candles for burial ceremonies.
25:41Well, there's another sort of slightly linked word that has an unexpected ancestors quite similar, and that's a verse, a
25:48verse of poetry, because that's got to do with ploughing furrows as well and looks back to Roman agriculture.
25:57It goes back to verses, which means turning, and the idea was that on the fields, on the Roman fields,
26:03a plough would furrow one line and then get to the end of the field and then turn and come
26:08back again.
26:09Just as a line of poetry will get to the end and then you will sort of return back.
26:13It's all to do with the sort of the metre, if you like, so ploughing a field to the metre
26:17of poetry.
26:19But that, one of the reasons I like this is that you can decode so many words from knowing that
26:24the Roman's word for turning was versus.
26:27It gave us reverse, of course.
26:30It gave us version, a turning or an altering of the text.
26:34Vertigo, I feel like you're turning round.
26:37An introvert is somebody who's turned in on themselves.
26:39An extrovert, somebody who's turned outwards towards the world.
26:42And universe, probably my favourite, because many things, the universe is many things,
26:46that when considered, turn into one.
26:49It is sort of one whole, once you bring all these things together and turn it into one.
26:55But yeah, one of the joys of English etymology, I think, anyway, is that you can unpick so much
26:58just from owning one Latin root that gave us so many things.
27:02Fantastic.
27:09And sort of vice versa would be turning.
27:11Vice versa is exactly the same, yes.
27:13So good, so good.

34:31Becomes calling 999.
34:33Neighbourly disputes get tricky, and emergency services must intervene.
34:37Next, this afternoon, while getting seven people to decide on an answer should be quite easy,
34:41shouldn't it?
34:42The question jury is on the way.
34:51You
