00:00All great stories have comedy and tragedy in them.
00:04And that certainly was Matthew's story.
00:06I was extremely happy when I got famous.
00:10Then I was like, uh-oh, this didn't fix what's inside me.
00:13This didn't do what I thought it was going to do.
00:16My brother would talk about that feeling of emptiness or loneliness
00:19that he couldn't quite fill.
00:22For millions of Americans, Matthew Perry
00:23felt like one of their friends.
00:25But to Mia Perry Bowick, he was her big brother.
00:27She sat down for the Netflix docu-series,
00:30The One About Matthew Perry, out October 27th.
00:33And page six has what she said,
00:35plus exclusive details from the director about Matthew's funeral.
00:38First, Matthew's sister Mia revealed that the Chandler and Monica wedding episode of Friends
00:43was bittersweet for their family,
00:45because they didn't know if they would ever get to see him walk down the aisle in real life.
00:49She told People Magazine,
00:51When we saw that wedding, we all knew that he had wanted that in life.
00:54He wanted a partner, and he wanted kids.
00:56We all knew how serious his disorder was, so there was this sense of,
01:01who knows what's going to happen.
01:02That episode was the season seven finale in 2001, and immediately after they wrapped,
01:08Matthew was driven back to the treatment center in a pickup truck helmed by a sober technician.
01:13He revealed in his 2022 book, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.
01:18Matthew Perry never married or had kids.
01:21He struggled with drug and alcohol addiction throughout his life.
01:24And in 2023, he tragically drowned in his hot tub while under the influence of ketamine.
01:29He was 54.
01:30Mary Robertson, the Emmy-winning director of the three-part Netflix doc,
01:34spoke exclusively with Page Six about the actor's memorial.
01:37She described a surprisingly sweet moment.
01:40At one point, Mia started laughing in the middle of the funeral,
01:43because she felt her brother's presence.
01:45She said,
02:05In another emotional moment detailed in the doc, the rest of the Friends cast walked into the funeral
02:10together, Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, and Matt LeBlanc.
02:17Mia said all five of them walked up to the casket holding hands and stood around him crying.
02:23Robertson asked the beloved sitcom stars to participate in her doc,
02:26but they declined, as did Matthew's other family members.
02:30Robertson told Page Six,
02:31I think everyone grieves in their own way,
02:33and I understand why someone might feel that this isn't the moment to talk.
02:37And I understand Mia felt this was absolutely the moment when she should be sharing this really raw
02:42and open and vulnerable and powerful and funny account of loving her brother.
02:47A source previously told Page Six that Jennifer Aniston would never sit down for a documentary like
02:51this one because she doesn't want to relive the pain and have it be so public.
02:56The one about Matthew Perry premieres Tuesday, October 27th on Netflix.
