The United States and Israel have drawn up plans for renewed strikes on Iran after the midterm elections, the New York Times reports, citing United States officials and others briefed on the deliberations. According to the report, the two militaries are preparing a short but intensive operation, stepping up exercises with planes flying over Iraq to rehearse strike manoeuvres. United States Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth travelled to Israel this week to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the plans. Likely targets include Iran's energy infrastructure, nuclear facilities, and missile and drone arsenal — with one possible target the deeply buried Pickaxe Mountain nuclear site. Separately, the Financial Times reports that Mr Netanyahu instructed his military earlier this month to plan a major new offensive, including a multi-day bombing campaign set for the weekend of October the tenth that never went ahead because of President Donald Trump's opposition. It is far from certain Mr Trump will approve fresh strikes — he has repeatedly vetoed such plans this year. Iranian officials have promised stronger retaliation this time, warning they would widen their targets beyond ships and energy infrastructure to data centres and underwater internet cables.
