00:00For Sophie Parrish, the warning came in a message from a stranger on Facebook.
00:05The discovery led her to uncover a deeply personal betrayal
00:08and digitally altered sexual images bearing her face.
00:12My cousin's face changed.
00:14She sort of stopped and said,
00:16there's something that you need to see, but I don't want to show it you.
00:20It looks like you, but I know that it's not.
00:23When she turned the phone around,
00:25there was this photo that looked very much like it was me.
00:31It was my head, but it wasn't my body.
00:36It's very strange to see yourself in that capacity
00:41when you know that it's not you,
00:43because it's like someone's just undressed you in front of your eyes
00:47and you've had no say over it.
00:49I really could not get my head around the fact that he could be so vindictive
00:54and so nasty.
00:56I don't know who's seen those images.
00:58I don't know how far they've spread.
01:01I could go for a job interview one day and for all I know,
01:03the person sat opposite me's looked at them
01:06and could think that was actually me.
01:08Sophie discovered the material in September 2022
01:10and reported her brother-in-law, Carl Marshall, to police.
01:13It was someone who was meant to love me like a little sister.
01:17I was a little sis.
01:19It didn't make sense.
01:22And I didn't think he could be so cruel.
01:26Carl was married to my sister.
01:29So he was my brother-in-law.
01:31We were just a normal family.
01:34We all got on really well.
01:36My husband and Carl were, you know, very close.
01:39They used to go to football matches together.
01:42The issue we had then was there was no law against the deepfake,
01:45so then they had to decide, how do we tackle this?
01:49I couldn't quite get my head around the fact that
01:51had someone have taken an image of me themselves
01:55and uploaded it naked, that's illegal.
01:58But because someone's created it digitally,
02:00the same protection didn't follow.
02:03It just baffled my head.
02:05I couldn't understand that, like, that was legally okay.
02:10It just felt like it didn't matter.
02:13I didn't matter.
02:14My voice didn't matter.
02:15My opinion on what he'd done didn't matter.
02:18My body didn't matter.
02:20Sophie launched a petition calling for the creation
02:23and sharing of explicit deepfake images without consent
02:26to become a criminal offence.
02:28The law changed in 2024.
02:30A separate victim later came forward,
02:32allowing detectives to investigate further offences.
02:35Merseyside Police said Marshall created
02:38266 sexually explicit deepfake images
02:41using the faces of real women and children
02:44between July 2023 and January 2024.
02:48Marshall pleaded guilty at Liverpool Crown Court to voyeurism,
02:51sharing intimate photos and making indecent images of a child.
02:55He was sentenced to two years and two months in prison.
