Blue Moon New Year for Aussies

This committed group woke up to one of the best views in Sydney, after spending a damp night camping next to the harbor, to secure top vantage points for the Sydney New Year's Eve fireworks show.

"I got here six o'clock last night, so bright and early. A little bit wet though."

Those who braved the outdoors said it would all be worthwhile.

"You have to see it if you're in Sydney. We're just here once in a lifetime, we will survive."

"The weather is not great but hopefully it'll clear up. It's the start of a new decade so it's got to be done."

Meantime, 3,000 kilograms of fireworks have been loaded onto barges, as final preparations for the show are made.

[Fortunato Foti, Fireworks Director]:
"We don't get a real chance to test this live. It becomes a bit expensive, but we're very confident it will come out the way we think it will."

There was however a rehearsal for the laser element of the show, giving Sydney-siders a sneak peak at the event which is expected to attract almost 1.5 million people, making it one of the biggest New Year's Eve celebrations in the world.

Revellers have been asked to wear blue, as this year's New Year's Eve falls on a blue moon, a rare occurrence which happens every 19 years.
