This month marks two years since the LNP took power in Queensland after winning its election campaign on several pillars including housing. The premier set a goal to deliver 1 million homes by 2044 and part of the solution is unlocking land. But some feel suburbs are feeling squeezed to make way for the government's ambitious target.

00:02For a decade, Kim Weston has lived here. A quiet street in outer suburban Brisbane,
00:09across the road from a former Energex site. Demolished in 2016, it's been vacant land ever since,
00:16but that's about to change.
00:19We're moving. We've sold the house, we've bought elsewhere, because we don't want to have to deal with it.
00:24The land has been earmarked for development as part of the Government's land activation program.
00:31Soon, the neighbourhood will swell by 450 homes.
00:36So you're not against development?
00:37No, not at all. If it was low density, the way that it was supposed to be planned,
00:42as the village feel of our neighbourhood plan dictates, then, yeah, no problems whatsoever.
00:50There is no point, though, sitting on the books of the State Government and having mowers go in
00:54and keep the grass at a low level. We've got to get homes out of the ground.
00:59Two years ago, the LNP's ballot box success was built on bold housing commitments.
01:05I commit to one million extra homes by 2044.
01:10Today, I commit the LNP to the delivery of 53,500 social homes by 2044.
01:16The means to meet that goal, unlocking more land like that near the Weston's home.
01:22It's supply, it's supply, and the third one is supply.
01:27Supply, supply, supply, supply. Fast, fast, fast.
01:30One million homes, that's 50,000 homes each year for the next 20 years.
01:34It's a big target that Queensland has set for itself.
01:37Two years into the Government's term, 60,000 homes have been delivered
01:42and more than 52,000 are under construction.
01:46For social and community homes, nearly 5,000 have been delivered
01:50and there's 6,500 in the pipeline.
01:53We're confident. It's an ambitious target, but we are sticking by it.
01:58But reaching it isn't without challenges.
02:00We are still short close to 20,000 workers a year,
02:04so there's a lot more emphasis that needs to be put on that workforce issue.
02:07But even if the Government meets its targets,
02:10advocates say more will still need to be done
02:13if we're to fix the housing crisis.
02:15We need to have a broader vision for addressing the housing crisis.
02:20So many Queenslanders are currently renting
02:23and what we've seen across the last five years
02:26is almost a 70% increase in the cost of renting.
02:32So many or less are on design
02:35Well, I just like 20 keluarges like theisms of their rental cost
02:35We're not sure that they Bonnie does not want to bring
02:35It's a wide variety of options,
