00:00Filming Missing proved to be emotionally taxing on Sissy Spacek.
00:04In her autobiography, My Extraordinary Ordinary Life,
00:08she admitted knowing next to nothing about the real-life political turmoil
00:12that occurred in South and Central America during the 1970s and the decades that followed.
00:17After being educated about the role the U.S. government played,
00:20put into action by the CIA, she was shocked and disillusioned.
00:25A short film recounting the imprisonment and murder of Chilean singer Victor Jara particularly affected her.
00:33Spacek nevertheless enjoyed working with director Costa Gavras, recalling he was full of surprises.
00:39He once had someone fire a gun off camera while Jack Lemmon was performing,
00:45capturing Lemmon's natural reaction on screen.
00:48Another time, someone on the streets of Mexico City fired a machine gun at the cast and crew
00:53who had to run for cover.
00:56Spacek often had to wind herself up hours before shooting highly emotional scenes
01:01and remembered needing several hugs from Costa Gavras while filming.
01:06Jack Lemmon, on the other hand, would tell a joke, pause for action,
01:10then deliver an emotional performance, and then once he heard cut,
01:14would go right back to finishing the joke.
01:17Spacek treasured a moment with Jack Lemmon where he took her aside
01:21to offer simple advice to trust her process more and go easy on herself.
01:26As I mentioned before the film, both actors earned Academy Award nominations.
01:32Coming up, the professor, Jacqueline Stewart, has this week's Silent Sunday Night feature.
