00:14As a kid, the movie that inspired me as a makeup artist was The Wizard of Oz, because
00:21it's just a phenomenal showcase for amazing makeup on every level.
00:28My name is Bill Corso, and I'm a professional makeup artist for the movies.
00:32Some of the films I've worked on are the Deadpool movies, the last three Star Wars films.
00:38I was nominated for an Oscar for Foxcatcher, and I won an Academy Award for Lemony Snicket's
00:45A Series of Unfortunate Events.
00:48I was seven when I saw Young Frankenstein.
00:56It was after that I became aware of makeup in movies, and that The Wizard of Oz were
01:01not real people, that those were really makeups on people, and that just sealed my fate.
01:06I would find materials around the house, I would pillage my mom's makeup.
01:10The first time I mixed plaster and tried to take a face cast, trying to make myself look
01:15like Frankenstein.
01:16It glued to my eyebrows.
01:17And it was only after that that I read in all the magazines, be careful to, you know,
01:22Vaseline out your eyebrows so you don't rip them out.
01:24These things must be done delicately.
01:27The Wizard of Oz was incredibly revolutionary for the time, because up until The Wizard of
01:32Oz, the audience was used to seeing, you know, Lon Chaney and actors who would do makeups
01:37on themselves, or the great Jack Pierce, who would do build-ups on people's faces with
01:41very old-fashioned materials, cotton, rubber, and collodion.
01:45And those makeups were done amazingly well.
01:48With The Wizard of Oz, it was the first widespread use of actual made prosthetics.
01:54And it was the first time they were seen in color, which was also a huge change for the
01:58movie going public.
02:00The department head for The Wizard of Oz was Jack Dawn.
02:03And Jack designed all the characters.
02:06And they hold up to this day.
02:07I haven't got a brain, all these do.
02:11It was just a groundbreaking moment.
02:13Come on, come on, hurry, hurry!
02:16What's amazing about that movie is that it inspired so many modern-day films and films
02:22on a grand scale.
02:23Smile!
02:24Like Planet of the Apes, like The Grinch, Lord of the Rings, movies where there was
02:29so much makeup involved with so many amazing characters.
02:32I don't think any of those movies would have even been thought possible had it not been
02:35for The Wizard of Oz.
02:37Take your army to the haunted forest and bring me that girl and her dog!
02:40Probably the one scene that sticks out in my mind is when the Wicked Witch instructs
02:45one of the flying monkeys to go after Dorothy and the others.
02:48And you see the flying monkeys and the Wicked Witch talking to each other.
02:52And that was just horrifying to me as a kid.
02:55Come on!
02:56Come on!
02:57Come on!
03:25Come on!
03:27Come on!
