00:00In 2016, Gillian Anderson reflected on playing Lily Bart in The House of Mirth,
00:05saying that she was nervous about this role.
00:08I was very young, she said, and it was the first time a director,
00:12Terence Davies, was taking a risk with me.
00:15Anderson said she wasn't comfortable on set
00:17and felt you could see that in the final product,
00:20but that, quote,
00:21ironically, I feel that there's something about the discomfort that adds to it.
00:25I agree.
00:26I mean, I couldn't tell Anderson was uncomfortable,
00:28but her vulnerability shines through.
00:31And like the HBO original series, The Gilded Age,
00:35The House of Mirth demonstrates how much cruel subtext was going on
00:38underneath the restrained politeness of the time.
00:42No one really said what they actually meant.
00:45Also, even though men made the money
00:47and a woman's only job was to marry well,
00:49New York society was run by women.
00:52They had all the power in the ballrooms and opera houses,
00:55and being cast out could truly ruin a woman's life.
00:59A new season of the HBO original series,
01:02The Gilded Age, premiered on Sunday.
01:04Be sure to watch it on HBO or stream it on Max.
01:07And if you'd like to go behind the scenes of the show,
01:10hearing from the cast and crew,
01:12make sure you check out the official podcast,
01:14hosted by me and Tom Myers from the Bowery Boys podcast.
01:18It's so much fun.
