00:00A Kenyan court has found self-proclaimed Pastor Paul McKenzie and 28 associates guilty of murdering 191 people,
00:07most of them children, in the Shakahola starvation cult case.
00:11The verdict was delivered in Mombasa three years after hundreds of bodies were discovered in mass graves
00:17at the cult's base near the coastal town of Malindi.
00:21Prosecutors said McKenzie urged his followers to fast to death in order to meet Jesus,
00:26with children allegedly ordered to die fast, followed by teenagers, women and men.
00:31The court heard that victims died mainly from starvation,
00:34while others suffered asphyxia, neck compression and traumatic head injuries.
00:40More than 400 bodies have now been recovered, although some victims remain unidentified.
00:45McKenzie and other defendants have denied the charges.
00:48He also faces separate cases involving manslaughter and terrorism.
00:52The massacre has prompted calls in Kenya for tighter regulations of religious organizations
00:58after it emerged that McKenzie had previously been arrested but released.
