Apologize, PCG spokesman tells Chinese envoy

Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) spokesman Jay Tarriela demands an apology from Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan over his statement that China can 'easily win' if they choose to use force. In an interview on Oct. 19, 2026, The Manila Times asked if he supported the calls of lawmakers for Jing to be declared persona non grata. Tarriela said he left the decision to the Department of Foreign Affairs to decide on the appropriate measures.

00:00I'm not aware of the result of the conversation of the DFA with the Chinese ambassador.
00:08Although I heard from the news, the president wanted to see the Chinese ambassador.
00:14Sir, you earlier said we cannot let this pass.
00:17Ano po yung gusto nyong maging outcome po?
00:20Nung, if possible, magkaroon pa ng meeting with President Marcos with the Chinese ambassador po?
00:24Well, para sa akin, the Chinese embassy has been saying a lot of things in the past days.
00:30And para sa akin, wala naman siyang sign of regret.
00:34He doesn't even intend to apologize or say anything as a result of those threatening statements that he did last
00:40Friday.
00:41If there's one thing that we can really ask the diplomatic Chinese ambassador, so at least apologize.
00:49Alam naman natin na mayroon talagang threatening statement ang Chinese ambassador.
00:53So the other details, I think it's for the Department of Foreign Affairs to make the necessary recommendation to the
01:00president whether it would warrant a diplomatic action.
01:04How about the calls both for the persona ng grata? Do you support this book?
01:09Again, I'm not in the position to call for persona ng grata.
01:14I respect the intention of the members of the Senate and some members of the House of Representatives.
01:19If they think the Chinese ambassador deserves that, they have all the authority to declare the Chinese ambassador as such.
