00:01These peptides are really popularly advertised on websites or on social media as wellness
00:09products and they're usually sold on websites that look really professional, really slick
00:14but NSW Health is now warning that their increasing popularity across the state is directly linked
00:23to a skyrocketing number of admissions to emergency departments across the state in
00:29July. Last year, in that month alone, there were only five patients that presented to NSW
00:34hospitals with side effects related to peptide use. Fast forward to September last month,
00:39there were 217 patients that came into NSW hospitals with these really adverse side effects
00:47related to the unauthorised drugs usage. Now, there's a number of these types of peptides
00:55which are sold and marketed as wellness products. Some of the most popular ones are
00:59redditrutide which is marketed to really dramatically help people lose weight. There's GHKCU which is
01:07meant to stimulate collagen and improve skin, people's skin. There's TB500 used to reduce
01:16inflammation but there are some really adverse side effects. The Therapeutic Goods Administration
01:21just a month ago told the ABC about a man who presented to hospital with a torn esophagus and
01:29that was after taking redditrutide and he tore that because he was vomiting so much from the side
01:37effects of the drug. Health Minister Ryan Park warned ABC viewers about some of the side effects that
01:44hospitals are seeing when patients present. Yeah, these are not minor. You can have significant
01:50liver damage and kidney damage. You can have severe allergic reactions as a result of using these
01:57products because often what is so-called prescribed in the product is not actually what is in the
02:02final product at all and that can cause irreversible damage on people's organs and today we're making it
02:09very clear that people have presented. They're presenting in large numbers particularly when
02:14compared to this time last year and we need people to take heed of this warning and if it hasn't
02:19been
02:20prescribed by your GP, if you haven't gone to a pharmacy and picked it up then it's probably a
02:26very good reason not to use it. So NSW Health Minister Ryan Park urging people not to use these
02:33unauthorised peptides. He says that or the NSW Health says rather just because an influencer has
02:41endorsed the products it doesn't mean that they're safe to use. You could risk your own health as well
02:47as putting undue pressure on the state's healthcare system.
