Director Daniel Chong and Producer Nicole Paradis Grindle discuss the creative development of Disney and Pixar's 'Hoppers.' They explain how the project evolved from a big spy adventure to a more grounded story, and how brainstorming in a room together was the key to finding the film's heart.

00:00We had more scientists to begin with. I'll start there.
00:02And there were some really funny scenes with some of those scientists that unfortunately we had to cut.
00:05Like three was the magic number, not five.
00:08You know, we never really had a script, and I think that was actually sort of magical.
00:12We had scenes, you had ideas, we had the characters.
00:15We generally had an idea of how it would start and how it would end.
00:19But, like, these guys would get in a room and they would just brainstorm.
00:22Like, well, what happens in this scene? And how do we introduce Mabel?
00:25And how do we make her compelling? And they would crack each other up.
00:28I mean, so many times you'd just hear laughter coming from that room.
00:31People drawing and holding things up, and then that's how a scene would come together.
00:35I think that was the magic of it, actually.
00:37And I think the hardest thing when you have a bunch of people that are just coming up with crazy
00:41ideas and laughing
00:42is that the movie gets a little untenable size-wise. It gets too big.
00:46So, originally the concept of this movie and that I imagined, you know,
00:49it was going to be like a Mission Impossible spy thriller where it's, you know, globetrotting.
00:54You just go around the world and we're going to this country and now this country.
00:56And we realized very quickly, like, oh, that movie is hard to write.
01:01It's like you can't ground yourself in a place.
01:03So, once we scaled that down, we were able to focus everything into one place
01:08and then have fun with the characters.
01:09So, yeah, that was definitely, I do miss the thought of, like, oh, what if it was that big
01:15and we were going everywhere, but I think maybe not for this one.
01:18There was a scene with the animals in a helicopter, with an animal flying in a helicopter.
01:24I was convinced the movie needed a helicopter because almost every Mission Impossible movie had one.
01:29And we were like, how?
01:30And the helicopter exploded, right?
01:31Of course.
01:33After they jumped out.
01:34You want to take a look behind it.
01:34Ah criticize me.
01:35Oh yeah.
01:35I don't wanna click.
01:35This is what you can do.
01:36You need to go to talk with me.
01:36Is that true?
01:36Which is true?
01:36As you can?यert
01:38you can think she has software or an electronic machine.
