In 1995, Michael released HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I a double album combining greatest hits with new material. Songs like “Earth Song” and “They Don’t Care About Us” reflected his social consciousness, but the album’s darker tone and Michael’s increasingly reclusive persona fueled perceptions of eccentricity. The *HIStory* world tour (1996–1997) was a commercial success but marked his last major tour.

Final Years and Invincible 2001–2009

In 2001, Michael released *Invincible*, his first full-length album in six years and the last of original material in his lifetime. It debuted at number one in 13 countries and sold eight million copies, earning double-platinum status in the U.S. However, disputes with Sony Music over promotion and contract terms strained his relationship with the label. In 2002, he won an American Music Award for Artist of the Century, affirming his enduring influence.
