Rise to Fame with the Jackson 5 (1969–1979)
In 1969, the Jackson 5 signed with Motown Records, a pivotal moment that launched them to national fame. Their first single, “I Want You Back” (1969), hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100, followed by chart-topping hits like “ABC,” “The Love You Save,” and “I’ll Be There.” Michael, only 11 at the time, was the group’s heart, blending soulful vocals with dynamic stage presence. The Jackson 5 became a global sensation, performing for massive audiences and appearing on television shows like The Ed Sullivan Show.
Despite their success, tensions arose. Joseph’s controlling management style strained family dynamics, and the brothers felt restricted by Motown’s creative control. In 1975, the Jackson 5 (minus Jermaine, who stayed with Motown) moved to Epic Records, renaming themselves the Jacksons. Michael began taking a more active role in songwriting and production, contributing to albums like Destiny (1978), which included the hit “Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground).” During this period, Michael also pursued acting, playing the Scarecrow in the 1978 film The Wiz where he met producer Quincy Jones, a relationship that would shape his future.
