00:00Directors can make stars, but also they can kind of change the trajectory of established stars.
00:05I'm thinking like Martin McDonagh, when he came to you with In Bruges,
00:08is the story that you thought you weren't right for In Bruges?
00:12No, I thought I was right for it, but I thought it was terrible casting.
00:15OK.
00:17Correct.
00:19I had just got out of rehab, and so I had burnt a good few bridges,
00:26and the phone wasn't ringing the way it did in the first few years of my career,
00:31and it was ringing also built on a promise that wasn't anything to do with reality,
00:36and I gained certainly a lot of finances from that,
00:38but it was all crazy for the first three years.
00:41But I had a little interesting journey and took a side trip to rehab,
00:46and then I came out of rehab, Martin wanted to meet me,
00:48and I knew Martin from back of the day from hanging out with him in London
00:50when he was doing his theatre here.
00:52Yeah. And we'd had some good nights on the tiles.
00:55All in the distant past now.
00:57All in the...
00:57Barely coffee and tea.
01:00But we met, and he said,
01:02you read the script, and I had read it, he had sent it,
01:04and I said, yeah, and he said, what do you think?
01:05I said, I just think it's one of the most brilliant things I've ever read.
01:07It's so beautiful, it's so moving.
01:09It's such a love story between these two characters,
01:11and it's just an anarchy as well in moments, and it's hilarious.
01:14And he said, great, so you'll do it?
01:16And I said, no, I think you can do better.
01:18What? And he went, what are you talking about?
01:21And I said, no, no, no, I said, to be honest with you,
01:22and I was very... I wasn't like, whoa.
01:25I just said, I come with a lot of baggage.
01:28I said, and I might not be known for the right stuff right now,
01:31so I think you should get somebody that the audience doesn't come in
01:34with any kind of prejudice at the beginning.
01:36The writing is that good.
01:37And he went, okay, great, that's fantastic,
01:39you're not the casting director, shut the fuck up.
01:42Do the film, and I went, okay, I'm in.
01:44Oh, you did, yeah.
01:46No, no, no, it was such a great film.
01:48Yeah, it was a lovely film.
01:50Yeah.
