00:00On October 14th, the Golden State Warriors released this statement in regards to Kristaps Porzingis.
00:06Porzingis will remain out indefinitely due to the same health-related matter, but will be around the team.
00:12You see, this isn't anything new.
00:14If you've been following him for a while, extending back to early 2025 when he was on the Boston Celtics,
00:20Porzingis had been cited several times as having a so-called mystery illness,
00:24which was originally thought to be COVID but then diagnosed as POTS,
00:28and he described it as, quote,
00:30I haven't been this sick probably ever in my life.
00:33After each workout, I was, boom, big crash, really fatigued, not normal.
00:39Remember back in the 2025 playoffs when he barely stayed on the court against the Knicks,
00:43and when he did play, he would play like 12 to 15 minutes but looked like he ran a marathon.
00:48He was so exhausted.
00:50But even after getting traded to the Hawks, he suffered yet another unspecified illness.
00:55This time, he claimed it wasn't related to POTS.
00:59Then, it happened again shortly after he got traded to the Warriors.
01:03After their first practice, reportedly three mornings later,
01:07Porzingis woke up sick in the team-provided San Francisco hotel room and called the training staff.
01:12Once again, another illness kept him out for a month.
01:15It's Josh Green, one man to beat, but it's a seven.
01:18Butter, who blocks it again!
01:21As you can tell, the latter part of Porzingis' career was simultaneously the most success he'd ever experienced,
01:26but also looks like it's culminating into the most tragic ending in recent history for a player as talented as
01:32he is.
01:33However, for most of his career, it always seemed like whenever he found a moment of positivity,
01:39it was always short-lived, because something bad always happened that would set him back.
01:43From his time in New York, to Dallas, to D.C., to Boston, and beyond,
01:48at every stage of his career, Porzingis has been met with insurmountable roadblocks that were so hard to overcome.
01:54In spite of all this, he still found a way to become one of the best players of his draft
01:59class.
02:00So, in this video, let's rewind a bit and take a look at the NBA's most tragic star.
02:05From the very beginning.
02:20Now, Porzingis' arrival to New York was met with, let's just say, not everyone was a fan of his.
02:26New Yorkers will find a way to hate on everything that moves,
02:29but at the same time, he was a relatively unknown prospect.
02:33Who the f*** is this?
02:35Who the f*** is Tengis Pingis?
02:37Fans, or at least American fans, were more aware of guys like Emmanuel Moutier or Justice Winslow.
02:43Both of them got selected in the spots after Porzingis.
02:46Luckily, the Knicks didn't draft either of them.
02:49Porzingis was labeled as a boom or bust prospect,
02:52but quickly upon his arrival, the boom was happening.
02:55He initially drew comparisons to the likes of Pau Gasol or Dirk Nowitzki,
03:00but Porzingis showcased a high level of athleticism seldomly seen from a player of his height.
03:05Dude was a 7'2 center who moved with an insane level of fluidity,
03:09and his defensive presence and his ability to move his feet was exceptional for his height.
03:14The comparisons shifted from Gasol or Nowitzki to Ralph Sampson,
03:18who, for those unaware, was viewed as the NBA's first unicorn back in the 1980s.
03:23That was now Porzingis' new moniker, the unicorn.
03:28Unfortunately, the situation he got drafted into was anything but exceptional.
03:32The Knicks were able to draft him at such a high spot for a reason.
03:36They got the number 4 pick after the conclusion of the worst season in franchise history.
03:40Literally, 17 wins up until this point was the fewest number of wins they ever had.
03:46It was a season riddled with injuries, a change in coaching, and Phil Jackson's first full season as the head
03:51executive.
03:52This era in New York, which I like to call the late Melo era, ended in a horrendous manner.
03:58Porzingis was the lone bright spot in an otherwise tumultuous period.
04:03By his third season in the league, though, it all came together.
04:06He scored at least 30 points in 7 of their first 10 games.
04:10With the departure of Melo, Porzingis became the unequivocal number 1 option.
04:14And he certainly looked like he was about to make the jump into superstardom.
04:25It wasn't just his defense that remained extraordinary, but he now had an expanding offensive game and scored from every
04:31area of the court.
04:32His offense was still a work in progress, of course, and there were plenty of kinks to work out.
04:38Preferably, a more consistent post-up game and adding more bulk to his frame because he struggled with dealing with
04:43stronger defenders.
04:45Porzingis also took plenty of tough shots.
04:47Some would say too many.
04:49It was a byproduct of having Melo as your mentor.
04:51But these things were expected to sort themselves out over time.
04:55Sadly, in New York, that time never came.
04:59A few weeks before the All-Star break and after finding out he was nominated as an All-Star for
05:03the first time,
05:05and what turned out to be the only time of his career, Porzingis suffered a devastating torn ACL.
05:10Porzingis throws it down, and he's hurt.
05:12And he's in some severe pain.
05:15While he would eventually recover from this, it wasn't just this injury in itself that ended his time on the
05:20Knicks.
05:21In the midst of an absence that spanned over a year, Porzingis and the Knicks organization butted heads on several
05:27occasions.
05:28He initially didn't get along with Phil Jackson, but he got fired a few years prior.
05:32Then, even with a new management team led by Steve Mills and Scott Perry,
05:36they made it clear that their intention was to clear up cap space and wait until the coveted 2019 free
05:41agency,
05:42as it had a pool of super talented players.
05:46Porzingis, while he was still injured at this time, was upset at the direction they went.
05:50Even though, honestly, it was the right choice in hindsight.
05:53If they never got rid of him, perhaps the Jalen Brunson era would have never started.
05:58Anyway, he felt they didn't prioritize him any longer, which, you know, he was correct.
06:03They barely communicated during this recovery period, and eventually, it was confirmed in a meeting on January 31st, 2019.
06:10In this particular meeting, the Knicks let him know they're unsure of committing a massive contract to him due to
06:16his injuries.
06:17That was Porzingis' fourth year in the league, which meant it was time for negotiations for a new extension,
06:22an extension that Porzingis never got from them.
06:25On his side of the story, he cited the unclear direction of the Knicks, and the constant losing,
06:30but from the perspective of the Knicks brass, he very clearly wanted out, so they acted immediately.
06:37The same day of this infamous meeting, Porzingis got traded a few hours later to the Dallas Mavericks.
06:44Here's the thing with his arrival to Dallas.
06:46Initially, it was met with some hesitancy surrounding his torn ACL, which took longer to recover than most people thought,
06:52but also an intense level of anticipation.
06:56They just got the unicorn right when he's about to enter his prime, and honestly, they didn't give up too
07:00much in this deal.
07:01It was a huge trade involving seven players and two first-round picks,
07:05but the three guys they gave up were unproductive in the years following.
07:09The picks eventually turned into Quentin Grimes and Keyshawn George, both of whom the Knicks eventually gave up.
07:15Overall, this trade had the potential to be franchise-changing for the Mavs,
07:19and they actually got a lot more back in addition to him.
07:22This move was made primarily for the Knicks to clear up cap space and move on from the Zinger era
07:27and onto a new one.
07:29For the Mavs, they added him with the intention to pair him with Luka and contend in the playoffs for
07:34years to come.
07:35On paper, this was a match made in heaven.
07:38You combine Luka's otherworldly passing and vision with Porzingis as one of the league's best rimrunners,
07:44who also happens to be a great shooter.
07:46They should have been unstoppable in the pick and roll.
07:49In reality, their compatibility on the court was very dicey in the two years Porzingis was there,
07:55and much of the problems stemmed from both of them wanting more control of the offense,
07:59which lets them not playing off each other as much as they should have.
08:02For example, the best representation of this is in the numbers.
08:07Luka on the court without Porzingis had a phenomenal plus 6 net rating.
08:11Porzingis on the court without Luka had a similar plus 5.5 net rating.
08:15But both of them on the floor together, they were only plus 2.
08:19This sample size spanned across two entire seasons and a clear indicator that the chemistry was off.
08:25Now, I think most folks point to Porzingis as the one to blame because he was the inferior player.
08:31But years later, both of them admitted that it could have been dealt with better,
08:35and they could have done a better job communicating and working together.
08:38Their potential as a duo was so high, yet never fulfilled.
08:43For Porzingis, the criticism came from his offense.
08:46Whenever he had the ball, the game slowed down a lot,
08:49and he would often try to do post-ups and moves that were quite inefficient
08:52while his teammates were less involved.
08:54Doncic shovels it to Brunson.
08:58Porzingis, good position down low, but he missed the shot.
09:01This was something that he kind of struggled with in New York, too.
09:04He was hard-headed back then.
09:06Every team knew he was best utilized as a finisher.
09:09That's his most impactful asset.
09:12Yet, he'd demand the ball way too often for how mediocre he was at creating a shot himself.
09:17A lot of possessions were just dead when he got the ball.
09:20This was something he realized years later in Boston.
09:24In an interview about his shortcomings in Dallas, he stated,
09:28quote,
09:44The analytics show that Porzingis dominates as a complementary player in the pick-and-roll,
09:48yet he was kind of resistant to this in Dallas and wanted to prove he could do more.
09:53It wasn't just the chemistry that held them back.
09:56Porzingis still had persistent knee problems in Dallas.
10:00In the 2020 playoffs, he tore his meniscus and attempted to play through it,
10:04but that made it worse.
10:06This injury forced him to get surgery and it carried over to the following year, too.
10:10His continued absence proved difficult to keep developing their chemistry,
10:14so the Mavs entered the 2021 playoffs as the underdogs once again and faced the Clippers once again.
10:20The result this time was, as you can guess, the exact same once again.
10:25Except Porzingis played substantially worse.
10:29He looked completely lost.
10:31Even defensively, his comeback from knee problems was not as optimistic as everyone thought
10:35because he looked a step slower and routinely got exploited by the Clippers' faster wings.
10:40On offense, he rarely got the ball since Luka now had full control of the offense and everything ran through
10:46him.
10:46What this led to was a very ugly, frustrating series for him
10:50and a major setback that made the Mavs realize
10:53maybe we shouldn't have given this guy $158 million.
10:58As the Mavs were ramping up faster than Porzingis could keep up,
11:01they figured it'd be better to trade him for pieces who could and want to fit alongside Luka better.
11:06Soon, he got traded yet again.
11:09Many things that just were not clicking for us.
11:14As the years went by, the reputation of Porzingis took a major hit after Dallas.
11:19But arriving to the Wizards with zero expectations at all,
11:22this was the opportune moment to recapture what made him so special to begin with.
11:27The main difference between his time on the Wizards and Mavs was
11:30Porzingis had worked on his game enough to where he now knew how to take advantage of his size.
11:35Previously, this was still a work in progress
11:37and the injuries and slow recovery stunted his development before,
11:41but he was now as healthy as he'd ever been in his life.
11:45His phenomenal play on the Wiz, despite the losing, sparked a new life in his NBA career.
11:51Individually, he looked more complete than at any other stage of his career.
11:54And much of the criticisms he once had, like his struggles against smaller guys
11:58or his maturity issues, they seemed like a thing of the past.
12:02Now, Porzingis just needed to prove his worth in a winning situation.
12:06Was his time in DC playing with Kyle Kuzma and Bradley Beal
12:10just a matter of putting up empty stats on a bad team?
12:12Or can he maintain this play on a championship contender?
12:16The answer soon revealed itself.
12:19Seeing the level of talent that has been brought in,
12:23of course the expectations are high and the pressure will be high,
12:27but that's what we're here for, you know.
12:30Upon his arrival to Boston on a very lopsided trade,
12:33initially this was regarded as the final piece to push them into championship status.
12:38The arrival of Drew Holiday too, but Porzingis proved to be the most intriguing piece,
12:43joining an already well-established roster with an identity in place.
12:46He slotted in as the team's third option behind Tatum and Brown.
12:50And dare I say it, he might have been the best third option in the entire league that year,
12:54because he seamlessly fit into their offense and defense and elevated the entire team.
12:59This is what we thought he'd be like in Dallas,
13:02but even he knew that it took a long time for him to realize how effective he could be playing
13:06this way instead.
13:07He accepted his new role, and this was the perfect situation.
13:12The Celtics rampaged through the entire year and won 64 games.
13:21Yet, unfortunately, bad luck struck once again.
13:25A few games into the 2024 postseason, he suffered a serious calf injury that sidelined him for an entire month.
13:32For the team, this was first seen as a major blow to their playoff hopes, but it didn't matter.
13:38Even without Porzingis, the team went on a tear through the first three rounds,
13:41where they only lost two games en route to the finals.
13:45While Porzingis did come back and dominated for a brief moment,
13:48he got injured again, as he witnessed his team clinch the title while watching from the bench for most of
13:53this playoff run.
13:55What looked like a phenomenal run in Boston eventually turned into the belief that maybe they didn't need Porzingis after
14:02all,
14:02and this team was so strong they were bound to succeed regardless.
14:06Because of this, the opinion of him shifted again.
14:09The Celtics didn't necessarily think he was a bad player because he obviously makes the team better.
14:15But when the mysterious illness started by his second year in Boston,
14:18and he was seeking a new extension to keep him there, the organization had a tough decision to make.
14:24Reliability and availability matters for them,
14:26and Porzingis missing 20, 30, over 40 games a season looked like the norm moving forward.
14:33And they didn't want to commit long-term to somebody like this.
14:36The second apron luxury tax was also implemented around this time as well.
14:41And the Celtics, much like every other team, wanted to stay below the second apron as much as possible.
14:46Anything above that would be a massive tax burden.
14:49If they felt like they could win without a hefty contract like Porzingis's,
14:53who is making 30 million a year, then they'll try to avoid it.
14:57Through the course of the 2024-25 season, the Celtics were still unsure.
15:02Much of their questions would be answered by the time the playoff started,
15:05so they can see how Porzingis does after recovering,
15:08and if he could help him win back-to-back titles.
15:11Turns out, not only did his illness cause breathing problems,
15:15but he could barely string together a few solid minutes on the court without being exhausted.
15:20His 2025 postseason was an absolute pity,
15:23cause he undeniably had issues with fatigue that were even worse than they imagined.
15:28In the second round against the Knicks, he could barely run,
15:31and it resulted in the most abysmal performance of his career.
15:34To top it off, in the same series, Jason Tatum tore his Achilles,
15:38which permanently put an end to their playoff run.
15:42This illness was devastating,
15:44because it was at the exact time the Celtics needed to see something from him.
15:48Just something to make them believe he's worth keeping.
15:51But instead, the final nail got hammered into his coffin.
15:55With Tatum's Achilles injury,
15:57they felt it was better to not go that deep above the salary cap
16:00if he was going to be out for a whole year.
16:02There was no point in committing to Porzingis either if they weren't going to contend.
16:06And thus, he was gone.
16:08At this point in his career,
16:10every single team he's been on was met with a dead end.
16:13Some of it wasn't even his own fault,
16:15but there were enough wrenches thrown into his plans
16:17that his career had been anything but a smooth ride.
16:21You know what's funny?
16:22It happened yet again.
16:35Hearing this interview,
16:36Porzingis was so optimistic.
16:38He was extremely excited when he first got to Atlanta.
16:41He was so happy to play with Trae Young
16:43and felt this was a great situation for him
16:46because he'd be a perfect fit for the Hawks' offense.
16:49This duo never came to fruition.
16:52Trae got injured and traded away after 10 games.
16:55Porzingis himself also got injured and got sick again
16:58and traded away after 17 games.
17:00The excitement fizzled out immediately
17:02when the Hawks knew they were ready to move on
17:04and go in a new direction.
17:06So, Porzingis found himself on another new team,
17:09the Warriors.
17:11The problems, however, still remained the same.
17:14His inability to suit up
17:15and the recurring illnesses were no longer random things.
17:18They were now a feature of who he was.
17:21If you have Porzingis on your team,
17:23you can expect this to happen.
17:25When the Warriors acquired him,
17:27their goal was to salvage whatever piece they can
17:29to make one last run at a championship,
17:31with whatever year Steph Curry has left.
17:34But with his recent history,
17:35I'm not sure Porzingis will ever get the chance
17:37to be a consistent contributor ever again.
17:40And he's only getting older.
17:43The fact is,
17:44Porzingis still remains as a top 5 player of the 2015 class.
17:48He's had a prolific career
17:49and made a positive impact on every team he's been on,
17:52even if it wasn't perfect.
17:54Despite that,
17:55there's always been this feeling
17:56that he left a lot on the table.
17:59This label of being a unicorn
18:00meant his expectations were quite a bit higher
18:03than most other players.
18:04And whether he did or did not meet them
18:06is up to the fans to decide.
18:10Anyway, that's all folks.
18:12Let me know in the comment section
18:13your thoughts on Porzingis and his career.
18:15For those who've had him on your team,
18:17what do you think of him?
18:18Do you truly think there was a lot more
18:20he could have done on the court
18:21if it weren't for the endless number of injuries
18:23and obstacles?
18:24Thank you all so much for watching.
18:26I hope you all enjoy the video.
18:27And of course,
18:28as always,
18:29I'll see you next time.
18:31Peace.
18:34Peace.
18:36Peace.
18:36Peace.
18:40Peace.
18:41Peace.
18:41Peace.
