00:00On September 3rd, 2025, renowned journalist Pablo Torre published a bombshell of a podcast
00:11releasing his investigations that linked Kawhi Leonard and Steve Ballmer to a now-defunct company
00:17known as Aspiration. In this investigation, he concluded that Kawhi had a $28 million
00:23endorsement deal with Aspiration, which he claimed was used as a way to circumvent the
00:27NBA's salary cap to give him additional money under the table. The most damning evidence for
00:32this came from a former Aspiration employee himself, who went to the company's board of
00:36directors and questioned the intentions of this endorsement deal, where Kawhi did not do
00:41a single thing to warrant this amount of money. When this reached the headlines, it launched the
00:46beginning of a potentially monumental scandal involving by far the richest, most powerful
00:51owner in basketball, and one of the NBA's most prominent superstars.
01:02And soon, we realized it wasn't just Kawhi, but Ballmer has made several attempts at circumventing
01:08the cap to the point where it put the NBA in the most uncomfortable spot imaginable.
01:13How is it possible to punish a guy with about the same net worth as the entire NBA league
01:17itself? Turns out, you can't. The NBA's internal investigation concluded by finding no evidence
01:25of cap circumvention. Although they did mention investigating a few companies like Daktronics
01:30and Boingo Wireless, they claimed they didn't find anything. But is this really true? NBA spokesman
01:36Mike Bass even went as far as to claim that an article from ESPN that detailed the findings
01:41of their investigation contained numerous and significant inaccuracies. Essentially, Steve Ballmer,
01:47the Clippers, and Kawhi faced no punishment, no repercussions. And even though the basketball
01:53world was expecting them to be punished, maybe lose some draft picks or void his contract or
01:58something, the result was exactly what we feared. But let's start from the beginning. In this video,
02:04we're going to take a detailed dive into the full timeline of the Kawhi Leonard aspiration saga,
02:09leading up to its final conclusion. And we'll also look at some lesser known details before this
02:14investigation started that should have made us realize, okay, something is seriously going on
02:19here. And this was a ticking time bomb about to blow up at any second. Without further ado, let's begin.
02:34October, 2024. About a year before Pablo Torre first revealed the Kawhi Leonard allegations,
02:39the Clippers were engaged in another lawsuit that got swept under the rug. Former Clippers
02:45conditioning coach Randy Shelton got fired from the team, but he filed a wrongful termination lawsuit
02:50in regards to how the team was handling Kawhi Leonard. Shelton joined the team back in 2019,
02:56the same summer Kawhi signed with the Clippers. And in one part of the lawsuit, he claimed that the team
03:01quote, leapt well beyond the bounds of the NBA constitution, alluding to severe tampering
03:08violations. While the lawsuit mostly pertained to Shelton getting fired for the way he handled
03:12Kawhi's injuries, it wasn't until the tampering allegations that made the Clippers release a
03:17statement, probably to protect themselves, as they claimed Shelton's accusations were frivolous.
03:23While this might have been the first indication of something going on behind the scenes involving
03:27Kawhi's arrival to Los Angeles, it didn't make much noise in the headlines, because everyone knows
03:32teams tamper all the time. And Kawhi joining the Clippers in 2019 had already been investigated by
03:38the NBA, and Balmer got fined a measly $50,000 many years ago. So we all believed that was the
03:45end of it.
03:49However, as the months went by, aspiration became a focal point of a federal investigation.
03:54Some articles were written about them being a former sponsor of the Clippers. But once again,
03:59there wasn't much noise in the media. At least not until the arrest of Aspiration co-founder Joe
04:05Sandberg on March 3rd, 2025. Sandberg was convicted of faking bank data and their company earnings
04:11reports, and sentenced to 14 years in prison. This arrest, along with the company filing for
04:17Chapter 11 bankruptcy at the end of March, were the initial factors that prompted Pablo Torre to start
04:22his investigation. Cause something smelled fishy with all this. Let's rewind a bit.
04:30You see, even before this scandal reached mainstream media, there's always been an air of mystery
04:35surrounding Kawhi and his team. More specifically, his agent, Uncle Dennis Robertson. Going all the way
04:42back to his time in San Antonio, in the 2017-18 season when he sat out almost the entire year
04:47due to injury
04:47management, there was a clear lack of communication between him and the Spurs medical staff.
04:53Kawhi and Uncle Dennis had always preferred doing things their own way. And I wouldn't say it's 100%
04:58the fault of one or the other, but his relationship with the Spurs deteriorated in the span of a few
05:03months. Soon, he became public enemy number one and requested a trade. On the bright side, the trade
05:10worked out well for him. Despite the assumptions that Kawhi might just phone it in and not try at
05:20all, he showed up and showed out. To this day, his 2019 playoff run with the Raptors is still the
05:26most
05:26iconic moment of his career. But even with the success, there was a dark cloud looming over the
05:32season, with Raptors fans anticipating his decision in free agency. Whether or not he would remain in
05:37Toronto for the long haul. Reporters tried to ask him questions about this, but with the way he
05:43answered those questions, it became obvious he had no intention of staying. However, little did we
05:49know, the Kawhi Leonard sweepstakes during the 2019 offseason were a massive red flag that we all missed.
05:56Because during that free agency period, as arguably the league's most sought-after player after that
06:00tremendous run to the championship, he tried to leverage this new desirability into more benefits
06:06beyond the NBA rules. There's been revealed to be multiple instances of Kawhi's dubious tactics,
06:13such as when him and Uncle Dennis met with the Lakers and demanded some ludicrous things like an
06:18ownership stake in the team, a private plane, a house, endorsement money. All these things were
06:24illegal under the NBA's salary cap regulations because it's all circumvention. But that did not
06:30stop him. One executive claimed, there's no beginning and there's no end to what he'd ask for.
06:41The Raptors also faced a similar circumstance, when Uncle Dennis went up to them and asked for an
06:46ownership stake in the Toronto Maple Leafs, plus millions of extra sponsorship revenue. And that's
06:52when they realized they were trying to arrange no-show jobs and no-investment investments.
06:57Basically, the same as what he asked for from the Clippers. Apparently, Kawhi's team believed the
07:02salary cap rules were just a suggestion. But I guess, for somebody like Steve Ballmer, he believed he was
07:08rich and powerful enough to get away with it. After Pablo dropped his first podcast on the investigation,
07:14he continued to do more research. What was initially believed to be a $28 million endorsement,
07:20even more was uncovered. Additionally, the Clippers as an organization signed a gargantuan 23-year,
07:26$300 million partnership deal with Aspiration, basically making them one of their founding
07:31partners for their new arena, the Intuit Dome. In November of 2021, Kawhi created a company called
07:37KL2 Aspire. In April, he signed that $28 million endorsement deal, but was also granted an additional
07:44$20 million in Aspiration stock. Then, this is where the money trail started to pop up.
07:50The Clippers started to funnel money into Aspiration, granting the company millions of
07:54dollars for what they call carbon emission credits. You see, what Aspiration claimed to be was a consumer
08:01banking and climate startup, which offered eco-conscious debit cards, fossil fuel-free savings
08:06accounts, and carbon offsets for purchases. Yeah, I mean, if you're not in that industry,
08:11none of it makes sense. But the money kept coming in throughout the year, from Balmer to Aspiration.
08:17Heck, even Clippers co-owner Dennis Wong threw in an extra $2 million, which made no sense.
08:23Dennis Wong had never invested in the company before this, yet you're telling me all of a sudden
08:28he decides to put in $2 million? For what? Eventually, the total transactions would reach
08:33over $50 million by June 2022. It seemed crazy, but soon all of this would make perfect sense.
08:41Because a few weeks later in July, millions of dollars started to hit Kawhi's account
08:45through the following months. This lasted until the end of 2022.
08:51Despite the company already being defunct by the time Pablo Torre started his investigation,
08:56former executives were under immense pressure to respond to these allegations.
09:00Andre Czerny, the former CEO, vehemently denied that their deal with Kawhi was a
09:05no-show endorsement. He claimed it was like any other endorsement deal.
09:09It wasn't just free money or used as a way to circumvent the rules because Kawhi had
09:13actual obligations to fill. For what it's worth, Czerny admitted that this deal did exist,
09:19so Pablo was correct. But plenty of stars have endorsements outside of their NBA contract,
09:24so that in itself is okay. Czerny claimed it was legal because it was a real deal with real
09:29obligations. As for what those obligations were, well, apparently, it was confirmed that Kawhi
09:36and Steve Ballmer did in fact plant a tree.
09:38Is that a tree?!
09:40It's not just any tree. It's a five-foot-tall lemon cypress tree.
09:46Yeah, hooray. I wish somebody could pay me 50 million to plant a tree.
09:51Ballmer was under heavy fire, and he too made a bold claim to the media in regards to this
09:55potential scandal. He claimed he was, quote, flagrantly defrauded by Hespiration and tricked
10:01into investing millions of dollars into the company, not knowing it was about to go underwater.
10:07Now, here's the thing. It is valid that he could have been misled from the beginning,
10:11because he wasn't the only guy involved. Aspiration was able to convince so many
10:16celebrities to invest in their startup, which included Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert Downey Jr.,
10:20and Drake, among many others. They too got scammed. But the thing is, it's possible that both of these
10:26things could have been true. It's true that Ballmer may have been scammed into investing in this
10:31fraudulent company like those other celebrities, but he also intended to use this company to funnel
10:36money to Kawhi. And that is illegal under the NBA rules. But wait a minute. If he thought he got
10:43scammed, then why did he keep donating to Joe Sandberg's charity, even after knowing he got
10:48duped? Perhaps when he found out about his company going under, he still needed to honor his deal with
10:53Kawhi and find a way to pay him. Now that we know there was a much bigger network of payments
10:58going
10:58into Kawhi's account, all of this makes sense. Anyway, during this one-month span from September
11:04to October of 2025, Pablo's investigation became the biggest story in sports. It even reached Mark
11:11Cuban, who for some reason joined in and called him ridiculous and heavily defended Ballmer.
11:16It seemed kind of weird because Cuban came out of nowhere and wasn't part of the conversation at
11:20all. Maybe he was trying to gaslight Pablo to stop him from continuing the investigation,
11:25because perhaps Cuban himself might have been guilty of paying some of his players under the
11:30table too. For example, remember in the summer of 2014, Dirk Nowitzki was offered a four-year $92
11:36million deal from both the Lakers and Rockets, but he opted to stay in Dallas for just
11:41three years, $25 million. Now, I'm not discounting Dirk's loyalty to the Mavs, but this is an
11:47astronomical difference, to the point where it makes you think if Dirk was promised something
11:51else, some additional compensation somewhere. Of course, this is all just speculation and maybe
11:57I'm completely wrong on this. More importantly though, this news coverage created a snowball effect
12:03of more and more journalists looking into Kawhi and the Clippers' past. He was apparently involved
12:08in three separate incidents of tampering or salary cap investigations, including one that involved
12:14Jerry West. Also another time when Lawrence Frank, the team's president of basketball operations,
12:20attended several Raptors games just to talk to Kawhi, which he got called out for. Although Frank
12:25admitted to doing this, he also denied any wrongdoing and strongly claimed the Clippers were playing
12:30within the boundaries of the rules, which in hindsight is freaking hilarious. NBA insider
12:36Mark Stein even talked to several executives and the general consensus was Bomber and the Clippers
12:41have been doing this for years, even before Kawhi. And if they don't get punished, they'll seek out
12:46ways to circumvent the cap themselves. This would eventually be proven true when it was revealed that
12:52all the way back during the 2015 offseason. The Clippers were trying to re-sign DeAndre Jordan,
12:57so Bomber promised him an exclusive $200,000 Lexus sponsorship deal, along with additional
13:03incentives to get him to stay. Lexus has had a long-term partnership with the Clippers,
13:08and much like Aspiration sponsoring the team, Bomber tried to get DeAndre Jordan an exclusive deal too,
13:14just like he did with Kawhi. You probably remember this image, right? This was at Jordan's house. His
13:21teammate Blake Griffin put a chair in front of his door and he posted this as a joke to show
13:25that
13:25Jordan would not leave the house until a new contract agreement was reached. On the surface,
13:30it was lighthearted and humorous, but behind the scenes, the methods that Bomber used to convince
13:35him were much more nefarious than previously thought. And it was only just getting started.
13:43From October 2025 until June 2026, the 2025-26 NBA season commenced, and it culminated in one of the
13:52most memorable, exciting seasons in a long time.
13:55The Brunson barrage continues!
13:58In terms of this scandal, the only thing the NBA did during this time was hire a distinguished law
14:03firm to investigate the Clippers. Although they kept their details private, so we weren't sure how
14:08the investigation was going. But that was it for a while. With everyone's eyes shifting away from
14:14this drama and onto the actual season and playoffs, it almost seemed like the Kawhi Leonard saga became
14:19an afterthought because it was put on the back burner for many months. And the attention of the
14:25fans moved elsewhere. Well, the attention of most fans, but not Pablo Torre.
14:35The 2026 offseason saw the Clippers shopping Kawhi Leonard around in hopes of finding a compatible
14:40trade for him. Surprisingly, he cited the Toronto Raptors as the team he preferred to be traded to,
14:46and both parties agreed to a blockbuster deal fairly quickly. In return, the Clippers were to
14:52receive Brandon Ingram, Grady Dick, and a decent package of picks to help them start their rebuild.
14:57But right as the transaction was about to be made official, the NBA put a hold on the trade.
15:03On July 8th, the NBA stepped in and froze the trade, pending the conclusion of the investigation.
15:08It was taking a massively long time, but that's fair, right? You can't let him off the hook like this
15:14by trading him to a different team. Yet, when the Raptors received this notice from the league
15:18office, they quickly realized, oh s**t, this isn't fair. This is what they said. The NBA league office
15:26informed us that as a result of the ongoing investigation involving the Clippers, we would
15:31assume the risk of any potential outcome of the investigation impacting Kawhi. In light of this,
15:36we will wait until the league's investigation is complete. Basically, the NBA warned the Raptors that
15:42if any consequences to Kawhi were to happen, the Raptors would be the one to bear that burden.
15:48Because of this, they made the right choice to wait until the investigation was over.
15:52So, while everyone waited for the result, Pablo Torre took the initiative and continued his own
15:56investigation. On August 7th, what he found out was not only did Kawhi have a no-show secret
16:03endorsement with Aspiration, but he also uncovered an even bigger network of shady transactions.
16:09The Jumbotron manufacturer, Daktronics. And Kawhi Leonard, according to our reporting,
16:14had a secret, unannounced, no evidence that he did anything for it, multi-million dollar
16:20sponsorship. This included another multi-million dollar endorsement deal with Daktronics,
16:25the company that created the scoreboard in the Clippers arena. Pablo found this out from,
16:30reportedly, an anonymous high-level source under contract for the Intuit Dome.
16:33A week later, on August 14th, he revealed that this partnership between Kawhi and Daktronics was
16:39very difficult to execute. Because much like the deal with Aspiration, Kawhi did not want to do any
16:44marketing or promoting of Daktronics. Just like we expected, Kawhi only looked for no-show,
16:50no-effort sponsorships. When Pablo uncovered some internal email chains, the Clippers apparently
16:56kept trying to schedule, quote, activations with KL during emails with Daktronics executives,
17:01to which they would respond, thanks for the reminder, go Clippers. This was happening all
17:07the way back in 2021, basically around the same time of the Aspiration deal. We could assume when
17:13they said activations, it could be a code word for payments or something. Remember when Balmer feigned
17:19ignorance about the Aspiration deal the first time he was questioned? He said he wasn't aware of any
17:23special deal with Kawhi. But needless to say, this new revelation was the backbreaker, and that trail of
17:30money was more evident than ever. When Steve Balmer initially claimed he got scammed by Joe
17:34Sandberg, what's his excuse this time? That he got scammed by Daktronics too? A company that's been
17:40in business since 1968? In hindsight, when we look back at the tremendous effort the Clippers put in
17:47to meet Kawhi's demands, and how they were so willing to bend the rules just to satisfy his needs,
17:52one could wonder, why? Why do all of this for somebody like Kawhi Leonard, one of our generation's
17:57most perpetually injured superstars? Did they truly believe he had the ambition to become the
18:02face of the Clippers and lead them to a new era of dominance? The answer, believe it or not, is
18:08yes.
18:09If you remember, back in 2019, he was coming off an incredible year, the best regular season of his
18:14career which led to an even greater playoff run that saw him average over 30 a game on elite two
18:19-way
18:19dominance. By the time 2019 free agency started, it was crazy stacked with talent, but among the field of
18:27stars, Kawhi stood above the rest as the most desirable player in the field. He truly had an
18:32argument for being the NBA's best player at that moment, or at the very worst, a top three player.
18:39If there was any player of that free agent class who had the chance to completely shift the direction
18:43of a franchise, Kawhi was that guy. Unfortunately, the results were super underwhelming. Seven years
18:51with the team featured one appearance in the conference finals, three straight years of first-round
18:55losses, a blown 3-1 series lead in the bubble, and piles upon piles of injuries at the worst possible
19:01time.
19:06It seemed like every season fans held their breath, hoping that Kawhi could muster out a
19:11healthy playoff run, just to be disappointed yet again.
19:15This scandal has an enormous amount of third-party investigations, but it turns out it didn't matter.
19:20There was no punishment for Steve Ballmer, no punishment for the Clippers, no punishment
19:24for Kawhi, just a year-long process that led to a result that nobody wanted, but many expected.
19:31Anyway, that's all folks, I hope y'all enjoyed the video, and of course, as always, I'll see
19:37you next time. Peace.
19:50Peace.
19:51Peace.
