Deep in the rainforests of southeastern Australia lives the superb lyrebird, one of nature's greatest sound copycats. Male lyrebirds have an extraordinarily complex vocal organ called a syrinx. This allows them to produce almost any sound they hear in the forest with shocking accuracy.
While they naturally imitate over twenty different species of other birds to attract mates, their talent goes far beyond nature. Lyrebirds living near logging areas and tourist trails have learned to imitate the human noises around them.
Famous recordings by naturalists like David Attenborough have captured wild lyrebirds reproducing the precise mechanical screech of chainsaws, car alarms, camera shutters, and foresters' axe strikes. They even produce multiple overlapping sounds at the same time to confuse rivals.
Would you feel amazed or terrified if you heard a power tool echo through a silent primeval forest?
