00:00What's up, y'all? We are Amber Lynn here at Barstool Sports.
00:03What's the craziest thing on your rider?
00:06Our rider is pretty chill. I don't know if there's anything crazy on there.
00:11There is a handful of us that will throw quite a fit if our Coke Zeros don't show up,
00:18especially those of us that are currently sober, because that is our drug of choice.
00:23Matty's currently on a diet of only celery sticks, so that's an absolute must.
00:27I, for the first time in my 20 years playing music, I saw a carton of cigarettes on our rider
00:33the other day,
00:34which honestly is a hard move.
00:36Celery and cigarettes.
00:38What's your pre-show ritual as a group?
00:41On normal tours, our pre-show would be to listen to music backstage, generally metal, which Matty just loves.
00:49But this tour, we forgot to bring the speaker, so it's been a little lame.
00:52That's why our shows have been pretty bad.
00:54Pretty quiet, floating on top.
00:55Acapella metal.
00:56And then, yeah, we'll just kind of all embrace each other very lovingly before we go on stage,
01:01and then rub each other's shoulders.
01:04I don't know.
01:05Joey, what do you like to do?
01:05A lot of stretching.
01:07A lot of stretching.
01:07We actually do lovingly embrace each other.
01:09I'm in two different bands.
01:11My other band has never done that, but this band does, you know, a really genuine,
01:16I appreciate you kind of hug right before we go on stage, and that's pretty special.
01:19What's your dream venue to play?
01:21My dream venue would be Red Rocks.
01:24Have you guys played Red Rocks yet?
01:26No.
01:26So that would be a cool first for this band, and my all-time favorite venue that I have
01:31played is Coco in London.
01:33It's absolutely gorgeous from the stage, which is kind of rare, you know?
01:38Like, the view from stage is never supposed to be the most beautiful thing, but at that
01:43venue it is, and so I'm always stoked when I see that one on the list.
01:45How would you guys describe your sound?
01:47I'd say, like, alt-rock, modern rock kind of stuff.
01:54Definitely, I'd say, unique to us.
01:56He's correct.
01:58Correct.
01:58Factual.
01:59It's Bruce Springsteen emo.
02:02Who's an artist you're inspired by that's outside of your genre?
02:08Springsteemo.
02:09Yeah.
02:10Joey's favorite artist truly is Springsteen.
02:12Um, I would honestly say that all of us are pretty much solely inspired by music outside
02:22of our genre.
02:24Um, that's not to say that we don't love the music that our peers are writing.
02:28Like, we're obviously constantly jamming that and getting inspired by it, but I mean,
02:31the thing that, like, makes us tick, everybody's very different if you just want to go down
02:35the line.
02:36Yeah, I'd say, I mean, there's a band, I guess they're kind of adjacent to us, but
02:39In Color is a new band that I've been, like, super into.
02:42But I guess that's kind of within the realm a little bit.
02:45And then, um, yeah, I'm trying to think artist.
02:47Gene Dawson, super into him.
02:49He's not really in our genre, but he's a ripper for sure.
02:52I mean, I was heavily influenced by metal growing up, so tons of metal bands, probably
02:58too many to list.
02:59Joey as well.
03:00Yeah.
03:01Uh, for sure, Springsteen.
03:03Um, a lot of metal growing up, a lot of, like, like, hardcore punk stuff growing up.
03:09Um, and a lot of, like, 80s new wave as well, which I think you can kind of hear throughout,
03:15like, our older albums and some of the new stuff.
03:17Uh, these days, I predominantly listen to anything without vocals.
03:23A lot of lo-fi and jazz.
03:25We listen to jazz on the bus quite a bit.
03:27Um, when I listen to music, it's kind of sad to admit, but when I listen to music that
03:32has vocals, I'm just analyzing it and, like, thinking about what it was like to be there
03:36in the room, writing it, and, you know, just not judging it, but analyzing it.
03:41And so anything without vocals is what really allows me to kind of step back and, um, just
03:48enjoy it.
03:49Still listen to a lot of punk rock, and I am the only one in this group that intentionally
03:54listens to ska on the regs, so, yeah.
03:57I wouldn't admit that.
03:58Sorry.
04:00That's what editing's for.
04:01What's the most favorite place that you guys have ever played?
04:04Um, I mean, I truly love New York City, but, um, we played a bunch of wild places over
04:10the years.
04:11Um, probably Australia.
04:12I mean, Melbourne's probably one of my favorite places to play, for sure.
04:15Yeah, like you said, we've had the opportunity to play in places I think none of us thought
04:21we'd ever even get to go, you know, Africa, Europe, Russia, China.
04:27So, I mean, all of those experiences are so sick to me.
04:30Uh, I would agree with Australia, though.
04:32We've always had a really good experience there.
04:34Right from the rip, a lot of great fans, and so we try to get back as often as we
04:39can.
04:39Uh, Sweden is doing a lot of things right.
04:41I, anytime I'm in Stockholm, Gothenburg, whatever, it feels, um, just, the, the culture that Sweden
04:50has is awesome, and they're very, very kind, and the food is wonderful, and, um, so I think
04:55that usually kind of, uh, determines whether I like a place or not.
05:00It's not just the show, um, and there's something so special about Sweden, Scandinavia in general.
05:05It's just really awesome.
05:06Who came up with the band name, and how did you come up with it?
05:09So, what I, um, we were in a band previously, and we were looking at kind of, like, revamping
05:20and, and starting this new thing, and we had a few ideas that bounced around here and there.
05:26What were they?
05:26Uh, I don't want to talk about that.
05:30And, um, uh, uh, former member of the band, Stephen, he had, uh, I think was doing, and
05:36the, we've had so many stories at this point of where it came from, and we don't actually
05:41know which one is true.
05:43Uh, the one that I think we mostly agree on is that, uh, Stephen was doing an interview
05:49with a magazine, and they asked him all the different places he'd like to go backpacking,
05:54and he listed off a bunch of cities and countries, and he said, and Berlin, and the guy was like,
05:59and Berlin, where is that?
06:00And he was like, no, and Berlin.
06:02And he was like, oh, okay.
06:03And the name just kind of stuck in his head.
06:06So when we were throwing ideas around, that one kind of stuck out to us.
06:10Who in the band is most likely to be late to a show?
06:13Dion.
06:16No, uh, actually the only person who was late to a show and missed a show is this guy
06:23right here.
06:24I'll let him explain it.
06:25Yeah.
06:26Usually I'm on time, if not early, because I'm the one doing all the work, but, um, so
06:32we were on Warped Tour.
06:33We had played The Gorge in Washington State, and my family, I grew up there, so my family
06:40still was living there.
06:41The next show, we were playing in Portland, and at The Gorge, we had played, I think,
06:46first on our stage, right?
06:48And usually on Warped Tour, they kind of alternate your schedule a little bit, so, like, the likelihood
06:53of us going on first the next day was very low, right?
06:56So I went home to my parents' house to hang out for the night, and then drive down to Portland
07:02with one of my parents' cars, because I think we had a day off after that, so I was going
07:06to go back home.
07:07And I got up early and started heading down, and they tell you your set times in the morning.
07:14So my tour manager went to that meeting, and he texted me, he's like, hey, we're on first
07:19again.
07:19And I was like, no!
07:21And I was like, got him, cut it very close, right?
07:24And then I hit the traffic going into Warped Tour.
07:27I thought you were on your bike, weren't you?
07:29No, I was on, no, I was driving, yeah.
07:31Um, literally, you know, I have to figure out how to get backstage with this vehicle.
07:37We're like, oh, God, I'm playing, here's my tour pass.
07:40Um, pull up the car, literally behind the stage, I can hear them ringing out, like, the last
07:46note of the last song, and I'm, like, trying to run up the ramp, and I'm just, like, so
07:50ashamed.
07:52Yeah, they were walking down.
07:53And then, basically, they were like, it's okay, man, but we're going to do a signing
07:57today, and if less than 10 people don't say something about you not being on stage, then
08:03we're going to have to kick you out.
08:06And literally, only, like, two people said something, and I was like, what show did you
08:10guys watch?
08:11There was only, yeah, they were, like, excited, like, no one was like, where were you?
08:15It was, like, so silly.
08:17But I was, like, mortified, I was apologetic, like, yeah, I was just so contrite, just, like,
08:23freaking, tail between, we still are, look at this, we're, like, 20 years removed from
08:27that.
08:29It truly is diabolical to put a band on first two days in a row.
08:33So, I mean, and it's also was absolutely insane finding out your set time in the morning
08:39of.
08:39I mean, like, there was Warped Tour encouraged and hosted late night barbecue parties, and
08:48then the next morning at, like, 7 a.m. be like, hey, you're first.
08:52And you're like, you were pouring shots last night, you know?
08:56So, anyways, yeah, it was a wild ride.
08:59Who in the band is most strict about rehearsal?
09:01That's got to be me.
09:03Um, yeah, I would be most strict about rehearsals, especially being, like, the new guy, quote
09:09unquote, um, just wanting to make sure that everything is dialed.
09:15I probably care the most because these guys have been in the band together for so long.
09:21I think there's a rhythm for them that is almost, like, innate and something that they share,
09:28having been together for so long, and something that I'm still currently trying to earn with
09:32the band.
09:33Um, the rhythm of being a part of just what happens subconsciously, almost.
09:39So, me, for sure.
09:40And lastly, what is or was your number one goal as a group?
09:44It's funny.
09:46I think the very first, I think, radio kind of conference that we did ever, uh, in probably
09:532003, uh, we got asked that same question.
09:58And I was like, well, what everybody wants, you want to be the biggest band in the world.
10:04And I remember Stephen looking at me like, whoa, why'd you say that?
10:09And I was like, come on, dude.
10:10I was like, everybody wants that.
10:11For sure.
10:12Um, you know, reach as many people as possible.
10:15Find as many like-minded people as possible.
10:17People that feel the same way that you do when you're playing the music and the songs that
10:21you've written.
10:22You know, I think that's what anyone wants.
10:24And is there anything else you want to say to your fans?
10:27Maybe people who don't know who you are?
10:29Maybe just people in general?
10:31Yeah, I've got two things.
10:32Um, number one, I'll say big Barstool fan.
10:35Very stoked to be here today.
10:36When I saw this on the list, I was like, let's go.
