00:00Richard Sherman and the Seattle Seahawks felt like a fairy tale story that not even
00:04the NFL script writers could have cooked up.
00:07A fifth round pick who rose to become the face of one of the NFL's most fearsome defenses
00:12helping transform a middling franchise into champions.
00:16It read like a dynastic destiny until it didn't.
00:24Sherman was known just as much for his mouth as for his play.
00:27At his peak, he was one of the league's premier corners and often tried to remind you of it.
00:33That brash, unapologetically in your face, often combustible attitude got him caught up
00:39with multiple people.
00:41So no, at Celtics Lover 33, before you ask, this is not a re-upload.
00:47I appreciate the loyal viewership and concern, it's just that Sherman really enjoys a nice
00:53cut of beef, including, if you read the title, having smoked with his own team.
01:00So, how did we get here?
01:03Sherman has always been who he is.
01:05It just got a bit overshadowed in college.
01:08He started his early years at Stanford University as a receiver before requesting a switch to
01:13defense, a move that ignited a rift with his head coach Jim Harbaugh, but ultimately paid
01:19off as he spent two successful years for the Cardinal at DB.
01:23Successful, as in Sherman both played well and managed not to get suspended like in his
01:29sophomore year when he was caught on the sidelines going off on his teammates.
01:34Following his senior season, Sherman declared for the 2011 draft where he ultimately slipped
01:39to the fifth round, which he blamed on Harbaugh.
01:42His former coach hated on him for sure, but scouts weren't necessarily that high on his
01:48game either.
01:49If anything, the draft slide only added to the Seattle space needle-sized chip on his
01:55shoulder that defined his early NFL years.
01:58He Carroll saw his potential from the jump.
02:01He once recruited Sherman out of high school during his tenure as head coach at USC, and
02:06now, leading the Seahawks, had personally scouted Sherman at the Combine.
02:10The familiarity paid off.
02:13As a franchise, Seattle was living in a transition period of madness before it found the right
02:18pieces, including Sherman Carroll, and took off.
02:22By 2013, the Seahawks were champions with a dreaded defense known as the Legion of Boom,
02:28which Sherman became the de facto leader of, both for his play and that whole thing where
02:34he really, really just wouldn't stop talking.
02:38Carroll fully embraced Sherman's personality even though he knew his dark corner often
02:42danced with danger.
02:45So, where's the beef?
02:48Sounds like a fiery guy finally found the right place and coach to foster that energy.
02:53Well, some fires ultimately can't be contained.
02:58During a 2014 minicamp session, five months after lifting the Lombardi, Sherman picked off
03:05Russell Wilson and added a little extra flair at the end.
03:09It wasn't unusual for Sherman to play in practice with a game like Intensity.
03:14I mean, the dude instigated a fight a few plays before telling the franchise QB,
03:19you fucking suck.
03:21However, the latter specifically struck a chord.
03:26Carroll later held a series of team meetings reminding his squad to uplift each other,
03:31a message that sounded like rah-rah bullshit to Sherm since he believed no one on the team should be
03:36safe from criticism.
03:38It's important to note that that incident wasn't reported until years later in 2017 and stayed behind
03:45the scenes drama because during the 2014 season itself, Seattle looked like a dynasty-bound franchise
03:51on the verge of repeating.
03:55Then… this happened.
03:57You could see the heartbreak Oliver Sherman's face in real time as he watched his team's
04:02championship hopes fade away.
04:05Now, what you couldn't see was Sherman absolutely laying into Carroll in the locker room post-game.
04:13That interception and the aftermath altered the team's makeup going forward,
04:17but Sherman couldn't shake the defeat, especially considering the team fell short of their
04:23expectations in the following seasons.
04:26While Seattle was able to mostly keep things in-house, the real trouble came in 2016.
04:32Sherman, who played with his heart on his sleeve, had two separate incidents where he was caught
04:38going berserk on the sidelines.
04:40In week six versus the Atlanta Falcons, Sherman exploded and threw his helmet toward the bench
04:45after the Seahawks gave up a big play for a touchdown.
04:49He tried to unleash his rage on defensive coordinator Chris Richard before teammates
04:53ultimately intervened.
04:56Sherman's post-game explanation, saying it was a simple miscommunication, didn't erase the
05:01optics of a veteran clearly losing his cool and being a real Debbie Downer even though his team
05:07got the W. Then in week 15, Sherman found a new target in Carroll and office of coordinator Darryl
05:13Bevel, having to be held back reacting in disgust to the Seahawks' decision to throw the ball at the
05:19one-yard line. The pass didn't even result in a turnover and Seattle walked away with a win in that
05:25matchup as well, but post-game, Sherman poured salt and old wounds and referenced Russell Wilson's
05:32famed Super Bowl interception. Carroll later said he held a productive meeting with Sherman where his
05:38star corner was apologetic for his actions, but a few days later, when speaking to the media,
05:44Sherman seemed more than fine with repeating the whole thing if the situation called for,
05:50leaving Carroll thrown off by Sherman's lack of remorse. Carroll then held a series of team
05:56meetings specifically addressing Sherman's behavior throughout the season, which Sherm described as
06:02a kumbaya session. After yet another disappointing season by their standards, even Sherman's teammates
06:09who normally rallied behind his passion were like, yeah, Sherm was wowed in a little bit.
06:16His teammates couldn't have been the only ones who thought that, as rumors swirled that Seattle was
06:22open to trading their all-pro corner in the offseason. General Manager John Schneider only added validity
06:28to those whispers. The GM admitted he wasn't aggressively shopping Sherman and it would take an impressive
06:34haul to see him go, but publicly acknowledging the trade was eye-opening in itself. Word on the
06:40street was the franchise only felt inclined to extend them in the pass because they won the Super Bowl.
06:45Whether it was for the purpose of getting younger on defense and freeing up cap space,
06:50or simply weary of Sherman's behavior potentially worsening,
06:53it wasn't the greatest sign for one of the team's marquee players.
06:58Even more shocking, Carroll didn't run away from it either. The coach who had long defended
07:04Sherman's temperament as part of his competitive wiring grew publicly frustrated in a way we had never
07:10seen, saying the quarterback got in his own way last season. Sherman downplayed the trade chatter,
07:17saying it's just part of the business and that he would hate to leave Seattle.
07:20The openness of the conversations led to reports that Sherman had requested the trade,
07:25which he later denied, but typically where there's smoke, there's fire. Behind closed doors,
07:32Sherman's relationship with the franchise was deteriorating. He believed Carroll in the front
07:37office had babied Russ and that the franchise was meant to have a trophy case filled with titles,
07:43placing blame solely on the coach and the QB. A majority of Sherman's Legion of Boom defensive
07:48teammates reportedly stood by him on that stance, while others described Sherman as the type of
07:53dude you could go to with any problem, but quick to turn his back when shit went left.
07:58Ultimately, Seattle never dealt Sherman, and as a team headed into training camp for the 2017 season,
08:05when asked about the whole ordeal, Sherman seemed nonchalant. Just talks they have every year,
08:12and you media folk finally heard about it. But if they were to trade me, best believe it would have
08:19come with a historic package. Gotcha. Sherman and Carroll reportedly had several private
08:25conversations to get back on track heading into the new year, and as far as his reported issues with
08:31Russ, Sherman said their relationship is splendid and he's prepared to go to battle alongside everyone
08:37in the Seattle Seahawks locker room. Didn't necessarily deny the previous claims though,
08:43brushing them off, saying every quarterback in the league is treated differently.
08:48This all seemed like a new version of Richard, and for the first time, publicly at least,
08:53he admitted that he was out of line and thanked Carroll for holding him accountable.
08:58Maybe this new energy could bring another title. Oh.
09:04Sherman's Achilles injury in 2017, leading to his first missed games in Seattle after
09:09years of Ironman durability, changed everything. Seattle's season unraveled,
09:16and the organization facing salary cap realities and a roster in transition decided to move on.
09:23Sherman said the move was a way for the franchise to clear a little more bread,
09:26and they wanted him back. But just a few days later, he was a new member of the San Francisco
09:3249ers.
09:33Being division rivals and having the guaranteed opportunity to face off against his former
09:38squad at least twice a year obviously played into Sherman's decision because come on, he's Sherm,
09:44but it was always his aim to return to Seattle. San Francisco pushed hard and had interest in him from
09:51the jump.
09:52He later wrote in the Players' Tribune that he had offered Seattle the chance to match SF's offer,
09:57But the franchise didn't budge. They thought he would come crawling back for nothing.
10:03The co-realization of the business hit Sherman like a ton of bricks.
10:08For a player who had never missed a game for nearly a decade until that injury, being tossed aside while
10:14hurt, cut deep.
10:17It felt personal. He understood he maybe wasn't a model player, but he would be forever grateful to Seattle,
10:24its fans, and proud to call his teammates brothers for life.
10:29It's a sweet way to sign off from a very successful chapter of his career, but remember, this is Sherm,
10:37and if you put him in front of microphones, he will not hold back on his true thoughts.
10:42When asked about the franchise cutting loose a majority of the championship veterans, including him,
10:48Sherman believed Carroll had to revert to his college mentality of swapping in new players
10:53because his messaging was starting to fall flat. He openly criticized Seattle's roster construction,
11:00putting importance on valuing young talent, and wasn't shocked to see they were a middling team
11:05throughout the 2018 season. And oh yeah, that whole brothers for life thing about his teammates,
11:11wasn't meant for Russ. Sherm said he never really fucked with the QB, and wouldn't expand upon old
11:18statements, but stood behind everything he said in the past that remained true. Set to face off against
11:24his former teammate for the first time, media members were like, hey, Russ does do some good
11:30things, right? To which Sherm sternly fired back saying he's also seen him stink up the joint.
11:36Sherman's battles against his former team were said to be drama-fueled matchups for years to come,
11:42but after their first face off came to a close, there weren't many fireworks. He even laid off
11:48Russ a bit. SF did later beat Seattle that season, and Sherman admitted it meant a lot to best his
11:54former
11:55team. But of the three seasons he spent with the Niners, there really wasn't much beef to pull off the
12:01bone, no matter how much the media tried to play it up. In retirement, as Sherman shifted into media
12:07and analysis, a softer tone toward the organization and Pete Carroll emerged. When Seattle captured
12:13another Lombardi trophy during the 2025 season, Sherm was more than proud to rep his former team.
12:20However, any remaining beef he had with the Seahawks all pointed to Russ, as Sherman took
12:27every opportunity he could to shit on the QB. It appeared to be a sentiment shared by many of his
12:34former Seattle teammates as well. But Carroll might have been the glue that held the whole thing
12:39together. When Carroll stepped down as coach of the Seahawks in 2023, Sherman spoke warmly of his former
12:46coach, crediting him with much of his development. In a surprise turn, Sherman and Russ reconciled at a
12:53party for Carroll attended by members of the 2013 title team. Although, Sherman later dissed Russ again,
13:02minimizing his career accomplishments, but let's just focus on the love, okay? However, it doesn't
13:10fully erase the middle years. The locker room division, sideline blow-ups, trade rumors, feeling of
13:17betrayal, public jabs, aka a shit ton of beef.
