In 2005, the Cassini spacecraft discovered something shocking orbiting Saturn. A tiny frozen moon named Enceladus was actively erupting huge plumes of water vapor and ice crystals directly into space.

These plumes erupt from giant fractures near the moon south pole, known as tiger stripes. The geysers shoot hundreds of miles into the void, blasting material at over eight hundred miles per hour. This ejected ice actually feeds and creates Saturn outer E ring.

Scientists quickly realized these eruptions come from a massive global liquid ocean hidden beneath an icy crust. Further flybys revealed the presence of organic molecules, salts, and hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor.

Because all the key ingredients for life are present inside this dark alien sea, Enceladus is now considered one of the most promising places to search for extraterrestrial life in our solar system.
