Near the center of our Milky Way galaxy drifts a massive molecular cloud known as Sagittarius B2. Spanning dozens of light years across, this gigantic reservoir of gas and dust contains an astonishing secret that sounds completely impossible to most people on Earth.
Astronomers studying the radio signals from Sagittarius B2 discovered that it contains billions of liters of ethyl alcohol, the very same substance found in beer and wine. It also holds vast quantities of methyl alcohol and complex organic molecules like ethyl formate, which is the exact chemical compound that gives raspberries their sweet flavor and rum its distinct smell.
Altogether, this single interstellar cloud holds enough alcohol to fill the oceans of Earth billions of times over. However, human visitors could never drink it, as it is thoroughly mixed with toxic hydrogen cyanide and deadly cosmic dust.
Even so, studying Sagittarius B2 provides scientists with critical clues about how organic molecules form naturally in deep space, suggesting the chemical ingredients for life may be far more common across the universe than anyone imagined.
