In March 1922, six people — from a two-year-old child to a seventy-two-year-old grandmother — were brutally murdered at the remote Hinterkaifeck farm in Bavaria, Germany. All were struck down with a mattock, and the killer then stayed in the house for days, feeding the cattle and eating in the kitchen as if nothing had happened. In the snow outside, investigators found footprints leading from the forest to the farm... and none leading back out.
This documentary reconstructs the haunting background of the Gruber family, the chilling murders, the botched 1922 police investigation — including skulls sent to clairvoyants — and the most debated theories and suspects: neighbor Lorenz Schlittenbauer, the supposedly dead husband Karl Gabriel, and the terrifying idea that the killer hid in the attic for weeks before striking. The case was never solved, and the farm was demolished a year later.
