00:00Everyone says my boyfriend Landon doesn't actually like, but they don't get him.
00:06Landon just sucks at expressing himself.
00:09When I kiss him, he'll frown and push me away, even though his ears turn bright red.
00:13At the movies, he'll resist when I reach for his hand, then a few seconds later lace his fingers through
00:17mine.
00:18So I've gotten pretty good at translating Landon.
00:21A frown means I'm embarrassed.
00:23A sigh means fine, you win.
00:25And...
00:25Chloe, you're annoying.
00:26Basically means, I love you.
00:28Friday afternoon, I brought Landon's favorite sports drink to football practice.
00:33Pierce, your clingy girlfriend's here again.
00:37Landon was the team's starting quarterback.
00:40Miss me?
00:41No.
00:41I missed you too.
00:44Annoying.
00:47What did you just say?
00:49I didn't say anything.
00:51Go away.
00:54Okay, I definitely wasn't imagining it.
00:59Chloe?
01:03Why?
01:05Annoying.
01:14Easy, Bennett.
01:16Falling for me already?
01:18Ryder Knox, the team's star wide receiver.
01:22Lakeview's infamous playboy.
01:24There were always girls around him.
01:25And he and Landon were practically sworn enemies, despite playing on the same team.
01:30Let go.
01:31Because of Landon, I'd never liked him either.
01:34Not even a thank you?
01:39So pretty.
01:41What?
01:42Hey, wake up!
01:45Back at the dam, I spent all night convincing myself I'd hallucinated the whole thing.
01:49By morning, I had to test it.
01:58What are you doing?
02:01Experiment.
02:06Ten minutes later, Sophie suddenly went pale and grabbed my shoulders.
02:10I forgot to turn in my assignment!
02:12Dead!
02:13Okay.
02:15Maybe I was losing my mind.
02:18After a few more tests, I went to the library and tried to make sense of it.
02:22Physical contact seemed to trigger it.
02:25Strong emotion made it clearer.
02:27All I ever got was a word or two.
02:30Sorry.
02:31Sometimes an emoji.
02:32It wasn't exactly mind reading.
02:34More like a tiny emotional pop-up.
02:37That afternoon, Landon walked straight up to my desk and dropped a notebook in front of me.
02:41Your econ notes.
02:42Economics was my worst subject, so Landon always took extra notes for me.
02:47I'd usually hug him and praise him until his ears turned red and he told me to shut up.
02:52Shut up.
02:53Maybe yesterday really had been a misunderstanding.
02:56I reached for the notebook.
02:57Dumb.
02:59I don't need them.
03:03You asked me to do them yesterday.
03:05Well, I don't need them now.
03:07I'll borrow someone else's.
03:11Landon's expression cooled.
03:12He picked up the notebook and walked away.
03:15Did you two have a fight?
03:19Do you think Landon actually likes me?
03:22She hesitated.
03:23And for once, I didn't make excuses for him.
03:27When I walked out of the library with my laptop, Landon was waiting outside.
03:33What are you doing here?
03:36Helping you carry your stuff.
03:37I can carry it myself.
03:42Chloe, what's going on with you?
03:44You haven't texted me in two days.
03:47You don't like replying anyway?
03:50He frowned like he genuinely didn't understand.
03:53Almost funny.
03:54He was clearly sick of me.
03:56Now that I'd finally stopped clinging to him, shouldn't he be happy?
04:01Annoying.
04:03There went my last bit of hope.
04:06Landon, you don't have to wait for me anymore.
04:09I turned to leave and nearly walked into someone again.
04:15You really need to start watching where you're going.
04:18Pierce make you cry again?
04:19None of your business.
04:21Wow, definitely Pierce.
04:24Cute.
04:26You hemp bud?
04:28Relax, Bennett.
04:29I'm not flirting with you.
04:31Liar.
04:32That night, I didn't call Landon for the first time ever.
04:37Usually, 30 minutes apart was enough for me to send him 20 texts.
04:41He'd complain, then stay up talking to me anyway.
04:49Tonight, his typing bubble appeared three times.
04:56No message ever came.
05:02The next morning, he was outside my dorm with breakfast and dark circles under his eyes.
05:11Don't forget Sunday.
05:12Our regular movie date.
05:14I almost cancelled, but I needed to know one last thing.
05:18What did Landon really feel when he kissed me?
05:2220 minutes into the movie, I still hadn't reached for his hand.
05:32Eventually, Landon put his hand between us, palm up.
05:35I gave in.
05:36Then I caught him staring at my lips.
05:38Did he want me to kiss him?
05:40So I did.
05:42For a moment, I almost believed everything I'd seen had been a misunderstanding.
05:45My stomach dropped.
05:47I shoved Landon away.
05:48Our first kiss had been in a movie theater, too.
05:51Back then, neither of us knew what we were doing.
05:55We just pressed our lips together.
05:58And when the lights came up, his whole face was red.
06:02Later, I got bolder.
06:04So did he.
06:07Sometimes I'd slip my hand under his shirt just to feel his abs.
06:11He'd tell me to knock it off, but he never actually moved away.
06:15I'd always thought, if that is an attraction, what is?
06:21Now I knew better.
06:22His body reacting didn't mean he loved me.
06:25What he felt inside did.
06:29Outside the theater, we ran into Mason.
06:33Romance movie?
06:34Seriously?
06:35What's it like having a girlfriend as clingy as Chloe?
06:37Shut up.
06:39Landon's face darkened.
06:42He grabbed my wrist.
06:44Gross.
06:45Again, Mason kept laughing.
06:47Landon looked pissed.
06:49But I couldn't do this anymore.
06:52Landon?
06:52Yeah?
06:53Let's break up.
06:55For the first time, panic flashed across his face.
06:58What?
07:01Landon followed me outside and grabbed my hand.
07:06Why are you breaking up with me?
07:08Annoying.
07:08You don't even like me.
07:10Why keep dating me if I disgust you?
07:14What the hell are you talking about?
07:15Then tell me.
07:17Do you love me?
07:18Landon went completely still.
07:19His lips parted.
07:20I had nothing.
07:21We're done.
07:26Heard you dumped Pierce.
07:28Ryder leaned against the counter, smirking.
07:30You seem happy.
07:31Of course.
07:32I don't get entertainment like this every day.
07:36Came to see how miserable you look.
07:38You've seen it.
07:39Now get lost.
07:40I walked away.
07:41Ryder followed.
07:42Come on, Bennett.
07:43I'm not done laughing yet.
07:44You're so annoying.
07:46Thanks.
07:46I kept walking until he suddenly stepped in front of me.
07:49Hold still.
07:51He plucked a leaf from my hair.
07:54I swatted at him, and he caught my wrist.
07:56Why was he so happy?
07:57Yes.
07:58A bike suddenly sped past us.
07:59Watch out!
08:00Ryder pulled me toward him.
08:02My back hit the tree, his body inches from mine.
08:05Almost close enough to kiss.
08:06Damn.
08:07His smile vanished.
08:09He stared down at me.
08:11I stared back.
08:13Chloe?
08:15Hey, Pierce.
08:19Let her go.
08:21Sorry.
08:25You left this.
08:28I said I don't want it.
08:32Take it.
08:36Same tone as always.
08:38Like we hadn't even broken up.
08:42Pierce.
08:43She said no.
08:45What's it to you?
08:48Nothing.
08:51Starting to feel like my business, though.
08:54Ryder.
08:55What?
08:56Thought I was here to enjoy the show.
09:00Stay.
09:02For once, it wasn't annoying.
09:06Then...
09:06Hate.
09:07Whatever hope had sparked disappeared.
09:09Stop following me.
09:12Your ex is hard to shake.
09:14One more word and I'll dump you, too.
09:16When did we start dating?
09:20After the breakup, Landon somehow became more present than when we were dating.
09:31I'll walk you home.
09:32I'll walk you home.
09:32No.
09:33It's dark.
09:34There are lights.
09:37What do you want?
09:40Um...
09:41You back.
09:42That sentence coming from Landon was crazier than suddenly seeing words above people's heads.
09:52It's scary.
09:54Then...
09:55Annoying.
09:56Of course.
09:57Forget it.
10:02Bennett.
10:03Get in.
10:04She's not going.
10:07Did I ask you?
10:10let's go
10:14as we pulled away
10:15I saw Landon in the mirror

11:30you don't dump one football player and give up an entire roster of hot guys
11:36fair point
11:37it didn't take long to notice something was off between Landon and Ryder
11:41one was the quarterback
11:42the other was a wide receiver
11:43they couldn't stand each other
11:44but on the field
11:45they had to work together

11:47ready
11:49race it
11:58he still waited until the rush was almost on top of him before launching the pass
12:16straight at me

12:35why?
12:35don't like what you see?
12:38not interested

14:11this time
14:11I didn't answer

14:59I'm very sorry
15:03Pierce
15:04nobody's making you
15:09the game continued
15:11but Landon looked worse by the minute
15:13his face was pale
15:14his neck flushed
15:15he'd always had a sensitive stomach
15:23you okay?
15:25burning
15:25missed you
15:29my breath caught
15:32I'd never seen anything that direct from him
15:36Landon?
15:37dang
15:42he's burning up
15:43he's burning up
15:43we later found out Landon had taken cold medicine that afternoon
15:46then drank alcohol
15:47I wanted to kill him myself
15:58on the way to urgent care
16:00he wouldn't let go of my hand
16:03don't go
16:04don't go
16:05I stared at his fever reddened eyes
16:06please
16:07for the first time I wondered
16:09if he hated me that much
16:10why was he so afraid I'd leave?
16:18between the medication
16:19alcohol and fever
16:20Landon was barely coherent
16:23don't go
16:24don't go
16:28I thought I annoyed you
16:31no
16:33you think I'm disgusting?
16:36no
16:36what about gross?
16:44idiot
16:50see?
16:51you're doing it again
16:56I'm talking about myself
17:07I'm such an idiot
17:12idiot
17:15I lost you
17:17for the first time
17:18I wasn't sure who those words were really about
17:22the next morning
17:23Landon was back to being Landon
17:27he clearly remembered nothing
17:30I didn't tell him
17:36yours
17:37you stayed?
17:38figured if your ex died
17:40you'd cry so hard
17:40you'd forget how to get home
17:41still annoying as ever
17:43jealous
17:44are you jealous?
17:45me?
17:48I just think
17:49Pierce has suspiciously good timing
17:51with the whole getting sick thing
17:52liar
18:05you've been looking at me weird lately
18:07maybe I'm finally realizing
18:09you're kind of entertaining
18:13good
18:20over the next few days
18:21Lambin really did start trying to win me back
18:25in a very Landon way
18:30not exactly poetry
18:34but never missed a day
18:44he stopped making the decisions for me too
18:49want them?
18:51for the first time
18:52I took them
18:55happy?
19:01writers sent me a picture
19:02from a convenience store
19:06Pierce?
19:09no
19:12Knox?
19:29writer promised ice cream
19:31somehow that turned into an arcade
19:33I thought we were just getting food.
19:37Detour.
19:40That's one hell of a detour.
19:47An hour later, I'd lost seven games.
19:53Are you cheating?
19:56Sore loser.
20:00Again.
20:02Cute.
20:03I was getting used to it.
20:07You really love watching me lose, don't you?
20:10Yup. No.
20:12What's funny?
20:13Nothing.
20:30For once, he didn't make a joke.
20:33Chloe.
20:34Yeah?
20:36You've been happier lately.
20:38He'd noticed.
20:40The next afternoon, I stopped by the football field to see Ryder.
20:50Ryder was outside the training facility with a girl I'd never seen before.
20:55Playboy.
20:59Hey!
21:00Chloe!
21:01Why are you running?
21:02I'm not.
21:03Then why are you walking so fast?
21:06I'm busy.
21:08Are you jealous?
21:10Dream on.
21:15She's my sister.
21:22Oh.
21:23Shut up.
21:29Yes.
21:31What are you so happy about?
21:34You're jealous.
21:35I am not.
21:42That night, I finally thought seriously about those words.
21:45Maybe Lanny's idiot had been about himself.
21:48Then what about gross?
21:50Annoying?
21:52I'd always assumed what I saw was the answer.
21:56But the words never came with a subject.
21:59Or context.
22:09That girl is spreading rumors about you and Ryder again.
22:13Hate her.
22:14I seriously hate that girl.
22:18Same words.
22:21But without context, they could mean something completely different.
22:25I thought about every hate, gross, and, and idiot I'd ever seen above Landon's head.
22:32For the first time, I wasn't questioning Landon.
22:36I was questioning my ability.
22:39Landon's mom, Susan, asked me to coffee.
22:43She didn't ask me to forgive him.
22:48Instead, she slid an old photo across the table.
22:56He used to be good at showing affection.
22:59A lot had happened in their family after that.
23:01He's been in therapy.
23:03He just doesn't want people knowing.
23:11Maybe some things weren't hard for Landy because he didn't want to say them.
23:16We're almost there.
23:17Five minutes.
23:18It's so hot. I want ice cream.
23:21Yours.
23:23Where'd you get that?
23:24There's nowhere around here that sells ice cream.
23:26Found one.
23:27You ran? No.
23:28You're literally sweating.
23:29It's hot.
23:30Do you do this for every girl?
23:31No.
23:32Then why me?
23:34Just eat it before it melts.
23:37Maybe he genuinely couldn't.
23:41I found Landon on campus.
23:46Chloe?
23:49I want to try something.
23:51What?
23:55Think of something.
23:58Like what?
24:00Anything.
24:01Idiot.
24:05Again.
24:06Annoying.
24:07Now tell me what you were thinking.
24:12That I'm annoying.
24:14Useless.
24:15Actually.
24:17Because I don't know how to make you believe me.
24:21Everything went quiet.
24:23The ability had never lied to me.
24:26I'd been the one adding the wrong meaning to incomplete words.
24:32What about gross?
24:34What about gross?
24:36When?
24:39At the theater.
24:40When Mason was talking about us kissing.
24:44I was talking about him.
24:48What?
24:50He dates a different girl every week.
24:52Then asks about our private stuff right in front of you.
24:56It's gross.
24:57So I'd broken up with him over one word.
25:00It was so ridiculous I laughed.
25:03Then started crying.
25:07Don't cry.
25:11Love.
25:13For the first time, the word appeared above him.
25:16Nothing else.
25:17Just love.
25:20I love you, Chloe.
25:22Every word sounded difficult.
25:24He'd said exactly the right thing.
25:26But I know that doesn't fix everything.
25:31I didn't get back together with Landon.
25:34Knowing the truth didn't erase a year of hurt.
25:36But I stopped avoiding him.
25:39And Landon started learning to actually say things.
25:44I miss you.
25:47I'm happy today.
25:52I don't like you being around riders so much.
25:55That last one came surprisingly easily.
25:59You're getting good at this.
26:03Because it's true.
26:13Jealous.
26:14For once, his mouth and the word above his head matched perfectly.
26:18Wait.
26:19A little shade is.
26:21Somewhere it is and brighter.
26:23But just like I said, just have to see first.
26:29That eight I went.
26:34So Pierce finally learned how to communicate?
26:38How do you know everything?
26:40I have eyes.
26:44So, you two getting back together?
26:49I don't know.
26:51Good.
26:56Hmm.
26:58What was that?
27:02Don't do that.
27:05Do what?
27:09That thing.
27:10You already misunderstood one person because of it.
27:13Don't use it to choose the next one.
27:16Then how am I supposed to choose?
27:19Use your own brain.
27:20Though that might be asking a lot from you.
27:23And for once, I had no idea what he was thinking.
27:27Friday was the final home game of the season.
27:29With under a minute left, we were down by four.
27:33With seconds remaining, they reached the red zone.
27:36Ryder cut away from his defender and broke toward the end zone.
27:40Landon threw.
27:46Touchdown.
27:49His teammates swarmed him, but Ryder immediately looked up into the stands.
28:01After the game, I found them in the tunnel.
28:06You like her?
28:09Yeah.
28:15So do I.
28:20Great.
28:21No pressure.
28:23So, Bennett?
28:24One was the guy I'd loved for almost a year.
28:28The other had somehow crashed into my life right after the breakup.
28:34A month ago, I would have grabbed both their hands and checked whose love looked bigger.
28:41Why do you think I have to choose tonight?
28:43I just got out of a relationship.
28:46And I just found out I've been misunderstanding my ex for weeks.
28:50Do I look ready to jump straight into another one?
28:55Fair.
28:57So neither of us?
28:59For now.
29:04But, you can keep trying.
29:08Hear that, Pierce? She was obviously talking to me.
29:10Shut up.
29:11Eventually, the words started appearing less and less.
29:14Even when I touched someone, sometimes all I saw was a faint flicker.
29:19Then one day, they disappeared completely.
29:22Strangely, I didn't miss them.
29:24I wanted to see you.
29:28Bennett, I was kidding.
29:30Ryder still annoyed me for fun, then chased after me when I actually walked away.
29:39One afternoon, I passed the practice field as they were finishing up.
29:45Whose side are you on?
29:46I used to need to know exactly what people were thinking.
29:49Now there was nothing above their heads.
29:51No pop-ups.
29:53Whoever plays better next game?
29:54Deal.
29:56Hear that, Pierce? She means me.
30:00Shut up.
30:01Maybe this time, I'd just follow my heart.
30:03You're not gonna be right there.
30:03I'm sorry.
30:03But, remember we can't hear that.
