00:06da sports coverage of the nfl has us on the west coast of the sunshine state downtown tampa's the
00:12spot raymond james stadium but tonight we've got a preseason matchup as it'll be the kansas city
00:19chiefs taking on the tampa bay buccaneers brandon gordon charles davis happy to be back alongside
00:25you and i'll tell you what yes it's just week two of the preseason but now they've got one game
00:30under
00:30their belts and a lot of guys trying to prove some stuff down on the field here today not only
00:35that
00:35these coaches like to win and i used to think it really didn't matter who won in the preseason
00:40then i watched some of those shows that the nfl does and you see the coaches in preseason after a
00:46loss jumping all over their guys so i learned one valuable lesson wins and losses count no matter
00:52what time of year he is chiefs offense ready to take the field and with none other than the three
00:57time super bowl mvp patrick mahomes leading the way boy it's great to see him back on the field after
01:04tearing his acl last season and most people know about the ability we've seen it for so long never
01:09forget about the determination i expect him to get back to elite play and fast now throw right side
01:17here going to be incomplete we'll have to see what kind of looks this defense is going to throw at
01:21them as this game works along but they're in the zone to start i do think we'll see plenty of
01:25man
01:25coverage as we move along but the first throw of this one incomplete and he'll get a couple up to
01:32the 29 that's a good start to this drive on the defensive side of the ball foreseeing completion on
01:38first down then you're able to shut down the running play on second yeah i wouldn't be surprised now
01:42a little bit of pressure going at the quarterback in the expected passing situation
01:49oh he had him he was hoping but he couldn't get it to him it's incomplete
01:55on fourth down the chiefs send out matter rising upon
02:10it'll wind up being a net of 41 nine yard return 50 on the punt and the bucks will get
02:16ready to go on
02:17offense so out comes this offense to take over for the first time leading them out is the austin texas
02:25native at quarterback it's baker mayfield he may have gone through some trials and tribulations
02:29but baker mayfield has never lost belief in self and that transmits to the rest of the team when
02:35he's on the field he believes he can win the ball against anyone and so do his teammates eight yards
02:41on the pickup and now they'll have some options on second at short a nice run here early on it
02:47doesn't take a great play call to realize you want to establish a guy of his caliber with runs like
02:51this early because they'll pay dividends as the game progresses
02:57and this one incomplete threw it down at the feet of his receiver so now here in the second week
03:02of
03:02the preseason you'd expect the starters play a little bit more than they did in week one but not a
03:07whole
03:07lot so if you're an offensive coordinator what are you looking for what you're looking for is
03:11things getting cleaned up as you go along because most of your playbooks probably install how well are
03:16they handling it easy in and out of the huddle no mental mistakes always starting to look like a
03:21good offensive football team fourth down so on is the punter riley dixon
03:30that's returnable now for smith
03:34we'll call that a punt of 38 yards officially and it's chiefs football first and ten kansas city
03:41taking the field for their second drive the crowd may be losing just a little bit of the edge after
03:47back-to-back punts they want some big plays they want to see some offense they want to see somebody
03:52break away whether it's through the air or on the ground now it'll be interesting to see where the
03:57patience is on both sides each head coach can you hang in there and not try and force something
04:03that could put your team in some jeopardy
04:08now here's mahomes pass complete there to harrison he showed off the athletic tube but it didn't buy him a
04:16lot of real estate
04:30now mahomes
04:34and he won't have the first down but he winds up taking a pretty good shot that time
04:39he's a talented runner and that means he's always looking for bigger and bigger gains when he takes
04:44off certainly found some bonus yards there beyond the first down marker and this early drive will
04:49continue with that extra joint from his legs
04:54so five yards here five on the play and it'll be second down
05:01it's a game of five brings up second and five at the 50-yard line
05:09from midfield here's mahomes that's into the hands of worthy and when you're playing a quarterback
05:17with some experience and some boxing you enter the danger zone when you decide to blitz him because
05:22if he's able to diagnose as he did on that play he can hurt you downfield he reads defenses so
05:27well
05:28doesn't he he really doesn't and down he goes a bucket in there to get him for a loss of
05:37nine yards
05:38and that also leads to fourth down matter rising now on to punt this one away and he gets it
05:45away
05:45a directional kick going toward the sideline no returning this one it sails out of bounds
05:50and they'll spot it right at the 20. as the home team's offense makes their way back out we show
05:57you
05:57the defensive coordinator for the visiting team this guy's looking to come up with a stop here in this tie
06:03game
06:13they'll start on the ground with irving that he is going to be stopped cold behind the line of scrimmage
06:19chris jones that time coming in with a tackle behind the line that was well played there defensively
06:25two tight ends in the formation which essentially gave them seven blockers up front hard to imagine
06:30with all that size and beef that they could let a tackler through but that's exactly what happened
06:35a loss resulted it's a short one here complete to the tight end this will be a short gain of
06:42three
06:42before he's brought down at the 22. i'm wondering if the same thing went through your mind is mine
06:47when i see a big man like that make a catch all i keep thinking to myself is big man
06:53with football
06:54look out everyone he may not juke you a whole lot right he may not run past you because of
06:59his size
06:59you're talking about a guy waiting in the 270 range but boy once he gets his mitts on the ball
07:04he's gonna be tough to bring down first catch for him it's good for a dozen and a first down
07:09first and
07:1010 at the 34 yard line
07:16baker gonna give it to irving and nothing doing he's immediately taken down at the line of scrimmage
07:21he was brought down officially no gain on the play and it's second down no gain on the play brings
07:28up
07:28second and 10 at the 34 yard line here's mayfield
07:35oh that'll be incomplete and he took a shot as he let that go and it's gonna bring up the
07:40third down
07:41they're giving him some different looks here defensively in the early going he's only hit two of his first five
07:45passes
07:46with a big third down coming up he's hoping he's got a play dialed up that can take advantage of
07:51whatever the defense throws at him
07:55working out of the gun mayfield
07:59that ball nearly intercepted but he could not hang on
08:03oh pick there certainly would have been nice instead at least it'll be fourth down
08:08one formation riley dixon now to punt it away
08:16and a fair catch signaled for and taken just outside the 20-yard line a 40-yard punt no return
08:23and they will take over first and 10. looking to put a drive together
08:34hands it to walker to begin the series and shedding the tackle and now some room he's still on his
08:41feet
08:41and down right around the 37 42 yards rushing for him now in his first two carries in the ball
08:48game
08:48they had a chance to limit his yardage but he was able to fight off that tackle so it's not
08:53just the
08:53responsibility of the guys who missed the tackles along the way it's all 11 on defense able to
08:58stop this guy unable to do it on that play they've got to find a way how about his ability
09:04to break
09:04through and gain that yardage so give him five yards there on the pitch and catch and that'll bring up
09:10second down brings up second and five at the 32-yard line
09:19they'll run it's grashard smith and they'll be inside the 25 now at the 24. that what a first down
09:28pickup of eight they really need to get something going didn't they they have punted on the last two
09:33possessions the running game starting to come to the front for them providing a nice pickup there to
09:38keep this drive going
09:43looking to throw is mahomes and this is going to be intercepted
09:50and the bucks are going to get this back to their own 34-yard line
10:01the bucks take over first and ten the tampa offense ready to get their drive started
10:06well we've seen both of these offenses still sort of in that figuring things out phase but i suspect
10:11some action on the scoreboard soon as they start out here first and ten and he can only manage to
10:17get
10:17a couple second and eight coming up 36 you've got to be impressed by the defensive front on reps like
10:24those they were not being moved off the line kept their shoulders square and gave their teammates time to
10:29fight to fight to the ball and limit that gain
10:33line of scrimmage the 36 on second and eight
10:43throwing mayfield got his man it's game
11:04and entertaining start to this one more to come on ea sports
11:23second quarter now in tampa bay it's the buccaneers in control of the football
11:29as they've got it with a third down and less than a yard
11:39they'll try and run here with urban and he's got the first down as he's after the 45 yard
11:46well after an interception last thing you want to do is go three and out give the ball right back
11:51and they avoided that yeah you definitely do not want to do that i remember in college i played with
11:55a really big time player on defense we ended up getting an interception as we passed the offense
12:00coming out he told him if you don't take care of this football you have to answer to me later
12:05you gotta probably take care of it pick up first downs it's a pickup of four and it'll bring up
12:10second
12:11down that was a quality play to start a new set of downs that was simply an offensive line winning
12:15the battle up front and winging a big way and giving their guy in the backfield a nice lane to
12:21hit
12:22to throw mayfield flushed out right on the run he'll let this go deep right side that's caught
12:29inside the 20 and he's into the end zone for a tampa bay touchdown
12:35tez johnson 51 yards and the buccaneers post the first points of the ball game as they take the lead
12:43here in this second quarter
12:47after a fairly uneventful first quarter that last play that'll make a few highlight clips it
12:52certainly will and you're exactly right the first quarter almost felt like a feeling out process didn't
12:57it both teams okay what are we gonna do looks like they ramp things up just a little bit to
13:02start the
13:10second quarter
13:12chase mclaughlin on for the extra point
13:19and that one gives the bucks a seven to nothing lead the drive summary that time five plays and it
13:26ends with a touchdown for the bucks
13:31following the touchdown here's mclaughlin to kick off
13:39and able to get this across the 20 but not much further as he's dropped it to 23 yard line
13:46and kansas city's offense now set ready to go
13:49and not an ideal way to end their previous drive they threw the interception charles after they had
13:54built up some momentum they were moving the football but something to at least build on
13:58for this offense as they run back out here yeah you're right about that up until that last play
14:03everything was working pretty well for this offense gaining chunks of garbage getting first downs
14:07really making a push for the end zone and look like they had a nice rhythm going now you gotta
14:12have
14:12a short memory here don't focus on the interception focus on what came before it and get back to it
14:19up the middle they run it's walker and this won't be enough to pick up the first a game of
14:25two
14:25third and one he's tackled well done he's doing that out defensively he had diagnosed pretty quickly
14:31i love that description because diagnosed is perfect on that one read his keys
14:36made the play and he couldn't even get going moving the football
14:41and able to find the open man that's complete and he will have a chief's first down as they're
14:46able to get the third down conversion gotta say it was a little surprised to see him charles come
14:51out with a shotgun on third and less than a yard yeah but the way nfl is nowadays we hardly
14:56ever
14:57see anyone really run for it on short yardage so they're going to throw the football more times than
15:01not that's a nice easy rhythm throw right there and they put the first down and he'll be taken down
15:07but
15:07not before he works it past the 50. mahomes now eight of eleven in this first half he's got it
15:14first and ten
15:16a gift for walker running right and they'll get this just to the 47 one yard gain no doubt about
15:23it
15:24a really nice job there by the defense not allowing him to get to the perimeter but that means your
15:29defensive ends your outside linebackers the guys that you pay big money to to sack the quarterback
15:33they also have to have interest in the running game as well they did a nice job there holding the
15:38point of attack and not giving ground setting up the screen here this is walker and he maybe makes it
15:47back to the line of scrimmage that's it nothing on the screen that time now it's third down
15:53come to the line here needing nine yards to pick up the first
16:00from the gun on third down mahomes
16:06and he nearly got the first himself but it appears he's going to be about a yard or two
16:11short give him eight yards that time on the scramble and now fourth down that was a good effort
16:16there trying to do it on his own but as a defender you're in a tough spot because you have
16:20coverage
16:21responsibilities behind you and if you take off too quick to try and get him down he might lock it
16:26over
16:26so better to track with your man defensively than trying to go up and make a stop on the
16:31quarterback exactly right what you're hoping is that your guys in the front seven can get him down
16:36mahomes now five for five on the drive he's responded after the interception it's first and ten motion
16:43man right is rice play action now it's mahomes he completes this to walker and that's good for a
16:53gain of six and that'll make it second down just about every quarterback is trained to really look
16:58downfield first before you come back and make a nice safe throw and in this case that's exactly
17:03what he did found his running back let him create some space and it turned out to be a nice
17:07player for
17:08the offense maybe not exactly what they had in mind but that scramble good for six and a first down
17:19six evident there that he learned his lesson from the last drive no way he was going to force a
17:23throw
17:24that time when nothing broke open kept it and ended up running for a first down himself
17:32throw left side complete that's rice and he is going to lose yardage here
17:38he was unable to shake three there they'll cover him for a loss of a yard
17:42that pass play wound up for negative yardage so here's second and 11.
17:50mahomes now to throw
17:54it's incomplete took a shot as we thought they might do here in week two of the preseason they've
18:01left their starting quarterback out there for this second quarter but i would imagine we will not see
18:06him after halftime yeah this is the time of year you've got to get your back up some reps and
18:10make
18:10sure you protect your starting quarterback
18:16and he nearly got the first himself but it appears he's going to be about a yard or two
18:21short the scramble good for a nice gain of 10 yards but still fourth down
18:30they'll go for it it's mahomes
18:35and he'll be taken down but he does have first down yardage
18:40they only got a couple but a couple's all that they needed as they convert on fourth
18:45two minutes on the clock second quarter seven nothing ball game
18:57a chance now to get even before the break as they come up first and goal
19:05throwing now is
19:07now they go screen it's complete
19:11and he takes this into the end zone for a chief's touchdown
19:15ken walker from four yards out and the chiefs are within an extra point of tying up this ball game
19:46that drive a long one spanning 15
20:06And it was Ken Walker who finished things off with a touchdown catch.
20:10So I'll leave it at seven now as they kick it away.
20:17And out a little across the 25.
20:20In the 27th, the Tampa Bay offense is set to go again.
20:24So both of these teams, Charles, coming off touchdowns now.
20:27But this offense, they just had to stand on the sideline, watch their opponent offer a really impressive drive to
20:33reach the end zone.
20:34Yeah, and I think you're not telling yourself the truth if you don't think there's some one-upsmanship going on
20:39right now.
20:40Because they just had their touchdown answered by a drive of double-digit plays.
20:44They also found the end zone.
20:46Now they want to do something even more impressive to answer that one.
20:50Now second and nine.
20:5228-yard line.
20:53A gain of a yard brings up second and nine.
20:56Now stick.
20:59And an off-balance throw there, and it's going to wind up incomplete.
21:03To this point, I've been impressed with the work defensively.
21:05They have not allowed a lot of receivers to run free.
21:08And there's another example, another incompletion.
21:19A shotgun throw for Stick.
21:21And he'll be hit as he releases it.
21:24And that'll fall incomplete.
21:26Part of what we're seeing so far as the defense has certainly coordinated.
21:30Both levels doing their jobs in tandem.
21:32The back helping the front.
21:34The front helping the back.
21:35The pressure got home on that last play.
21:37And forced him to try and throw through contact and short of the sticks.
21:45Great blocking nearly sprung in there.
21:4828-yard return.
21:50And the Chiefs will have an excellent field position here as they take over.
21:59The home's going to throw.
22:01Pitch and catch here to Travis Kelsey.
22:04And able to break one tackle, but then quickly brought down the nice little game.
22:09So not quite a first down just yet as they come up on second and less than a yard.
22:17On the counter, it's Walker.
22:20And he's going to get it down to the 33-yard line here.
22:23The Chiefs will use the first of their timeouts as the stoppage will come with a little under a minute
22:29to go in this first half.
22:32So they'll come up first in 10 now from the 33.
22:39In motion, the tight end Kelsey.
22:44Here's Mahomes to throw.
22:48And he'll protect himself at the end here as he winds up getting pretty decent yardage.
22:53The improv on the scramble there gets him six, and it'll be second down.
22:57At the 26-yard line.
23:00In motion right, that's Harrison.
23:03To throw, it's Mahomes.
23:07And he is going to lose yardage here.
23:10Now another timeout called for by the offense.
23:13As the clock will stop with 21 seconds to go here in the first half.
23:20Third and five.
23:26He'll drop to throw.
23:28And he takes a shot on the release as this will be incomplete.
23:33Oh, that's going to hurt a bit because they needed to come through to completion there.
23:37Now a drive that started with great goal position is facing fourth down.
23:40Bunker's kick here is good.
23:43And they take the lead here now at 10-7.
23:46So they're able to end that drive with three points in this one possession ball game.
23:51And ideally, you want to end every drive with points.
23:54Most quarterbacks, you tell us, end it with a kick, right?
23:57A PAT, that's number one.
23:59Field goal you'll take.
24:00Punts, you really don't want to do that.
24:02In this case, they'll take the field goal and get prepared for the rest of the game.
24:11The Bucs offense set to begin their next possession.
24:15And with time quickly fading here in the second quarter,
24:18not sure how aggressively, offensively they want to play this.
24:21I think we'll find out just how much they trust their guys in this situation
24:26if they decide to take a shot.
24:28Calling a gain of six on the play.
24:31And that's going to bring up second down.
24:33Brings up second and four.
24:40Off play action.
24:42It's Stick rolling to his right.

24:49And out of bounds on the other side of midfield at the 45.
24:54Sometimes it's designed,
24:55and sometimes you just have to know when to leave the pocket.
24:58And move and make something happen.
25:00And that play is able to get on the run
25:02and was still accurate throwing the football.
25:07They'll throw now on the final play.
25:10He's going to rifle one deep left side.
25:14All that's in the double coverage and intercepted.
25:20And he will be out of bounds with no time remaining
25:23on what will be the final action of this first half.

25:45What will happen in the second half?
25:47Let's find out as we send it back to the stadium
25:49and our commentary team, Brandon Godden and Charles Davis.

26:14A field goal separates these two teams
26:16as we come back for this second half.
26:19They expect to see a good number of backups going forward
26:22as we are back and underway here in preseason week two.
26:29And it takes this near the 25.
26:31Just a little pass there, calling to 26.
26:34The Buccaneers offense heading out.
26:37You see their offensive coordinator, Zach Robinson.
26:40And they're still very much in this game, although they do trail.
26:43What's the game plan, Charles, for the second half?
26:45It might be a little counterintuitive
26:47because most people will think losing equals passing the ball more.
26:51But I'd establish the running game.
26:53They kind of went away from it in the first half.
26:55I think if they get back in balance,
26:57it'll happen when they put the ball back in the air.
27:27Now that they're used to be in the air.
27:38five yards is the tally on first down that brings up second and five
27:42and now the first throw for the backup quarterback and that went too far in front
27:53he couldn't reel it in it's incomplete we've seen these defenses make enough opportunistic
27:58players to keep this one low scoring flying around making plays on the ball and we see yet another
28:03errant throw as a result they come up now third and five following the incomplete pass
28:09on the ground this is sean tucker and he will have a first down as they get into the ground
28:16at the 37 it's a pickup of six and good enough to move the chains that's quite a spot there
28:23for his
28:23first carry of the game but obviously they had plenty of faith in him didn't they no question
28:27about it and here why not go with the fresh legs able to push forward pick up that first
28:32line of scrimmage the 37 on first and 10.
28:37they'll work the middle here with right and he slips up past the 45 before being tackled
28:44it's a gain of 11 and the bucks have a first down we don't talk about it very often sometimes
28:49there's
28:49a dip in intensity when you start the second half which can manifest itself in some sloppy tackling
28:54and how about right there he ran right through that weak tackle attempt two first downs have
28:59him up near midfield now on first and ten
29:05to throw is daniels blitz coming and down he goes that one will set him back nearly 10 yards here
29:14on
29:14first down of the sack it's now second and they need to work to at least get some of this
29:19yardage
29:19back after the sack second and 19 give up the middle to right
29:25and he'll get it out to midfield he'll spot it right at midfield at the 50
29:30wind up getting 10 back as that sets him up for third down caught the defense off guard there a
29:36bit
29:36on second and long but now you still have to deal with third and long yeah you do but you
29:41feel pretty
29:41good about the last play don't you and maybe it gives you a little bit of confidence dialing up the
29:46next one to maybe and the chiefs are going to get him felix and you dk usama the man to
29:52get home for
29:53the sack the lessons will continue this rookie he's got to learn how to read situations just a little
29:58bit better that far behind the line he's got to find a way to get rid of the football and
30:03not take
30:03the sack whether it's with his legs or just throwing it away they'll call that a 33 yard punt with
30:09no
30:09return and that will come the offense as they take over 26 yards so here's the chiefs offense ready for
30:15their first reps in half number two their defense has done the job now it's the offense's turn as
30:22they've got it first and 10 and he's going to lose yardage and be backed up to the 25 he
30:29was unable to
30:30shake free there and they'll cover him for a loss of a yard a loss of a yard there to
30:34start out that
30:35leads to a second and 11 out on the man in motion left
30:41fields now to throw dancing to his left and he's taken down but able to slip across the 35
30:51fields we know he has the good mobility he flashes it there as he scrambles for the first down
30:56Kansas City off the play fake he'll look to throw now nowhere for fields to turn and down he goes
31:06he
31:07couldn't get rid of it he takes a sack for a loss of six to bring up second down
31:17to throw his fields that's caught royals with it and able to get this one across the 45 before he's
31:28brought down again a couple of first downs on the drive already as they'll go from the 47 now on
31:34first
31:38down
31:38smith at the middle and a good push there defensively as they stop him at the 30 rate
31:43gave him just one and a big fella stuffed that one up in a big way i think doubling him
31:50has to be a
31:50priority because you can't move up to the next level if you don't take care of him first
31:56back to throw fields
32:00he's got his man in the crossing round and this is going to lead to another first down as the
32:06tackle's made at the box 37 first down chiefs
32:15a first down carry for smith fights him off
32:20still going and all the way in for a Kansas City touchdown touchdown
32:26brashad smith 37 yards and the chiefs are able to widen their advantage
32:34circle that drive because that might be one to remember well executed to give him a little cushion
32:39but let's take it into the boxing ring you talk about them commanding it
32:43keeping the fight where they wanted to whether it was in the center of the ring or
32:46put them on the ropes because it was jab jab jab and finally the haymaker to put that drive away
32:56harrison butker now after the touchdown here's butker on to kick it away
33:06and a nice return sets him up pretty good here right at the 30 yard line
33:10and tampa bay trots out there now they find themselves down 17 to 7 as they start this drive first
33:18and 10.
33:24looking to put a drive together
33:29they'll start on the ground with right
33:31and he's got a good game of 70 for the 37
33:35it's time for them to be good teammates right here and what i mean by that is
33:39possess the ball for a little while get at least two first downs
33:42give their defense chance to settle down a little bit after they give up a touchdown
33:48they go play action
33:50daniels he finds his man complete that's sharp and able to get this one across the 45 before he's brought
33:58down
33:58first down
34:01first and 10 at the 48 yard line
34:08working out of the gun daniels
34:11he gets this one to johnson
34:13and he'll lose yardage here back at the 41
34:17so that one a disaster a big loss there with second down coming up
34:22but let's call that a less than ideal play on first down
34:26no doubt about that one because
34:28that was a situation of just digging a deeper and deeper hole for himself
34:31and it ended up a big time loss
34:33four yards on the pick up there and now they'll have to contend with a third and 13
34:38on any running play that's called they're always hoping that's going to break big
34:42and go the distance but when you get a nice game like that
34:45you're able to do so many things anyway
34:47you can come back and run essentially the same play again
34:50continue to move the ball on the ground
34:52or you can decide to throw the ball now because usually you have the defense back on its heels
34:56and that's going to be incomplete
34:58the coverage too good there the contact popped the ball free and it's fourth down
