Was chocolate once money? Yes! 🍫💰

The ancient Maya and Aztecs had no coins, so they used cacao beans as currency. One bean could buy a tomato, and about thirty could buy a rabbit. Beans were also used to pay taxes and tribute to rulers. People even faked them by hollowing out beans and filling them with sand. Chocolate drinks were a treat for nobles, and cacao also had a role in sacred ceremonies.
