00:12Hi, I'm Mark Waters, the director of the Spiderwick Chronicles, and I'm here to introduce you to the fantastical world
00:18of Spiderwick.
00:20The important thing to remember about our story is that everything in it is true.
00:23The authors, Tony DiDalizzi and Holly Black, received letters from an actual family who experienced everything you'll see in this
00:30movie.
00:31So ogres, goblins, trolls, sprites, brownies and boggarts, they actually exist in the world. You just haven't been able to
00:38see them yet.
00:39But we're going to change all that with this DVD.
00:41I would like to show you a few objects you're going to need to experience this DVD fully.
00:46The first is salt. Now I've spread salt all around my chair, all around the building I'm in,
00:52because it keeps you safe from fantastical creatures. They won't cross a line of salt.
00:57The second is honey and crackers.
01:00It's important to keep lots of honey and crackers around in case a brownie turns into a boggart.
01:05You'll be able to give them some honey, it will appease them, and they'll shrink back down into a brownie
01:10again.
01:11The last is tomato sauce.
01:14Tomato sauce is a very important goblin defense, and it will burn their skin like acid, so it's really good
01:21to keep a lot of this around.
01:23Now I'm going to show you one of the most important things in the fantastical world.
01:27This is Arthur Spiderwick's original field guide.
01:32Arthur Spiderwick did all kinds of research into the fantastical world and learned all the information you can about fairy
01:38creatures and put it into this book.
01:40So it's incredibly valuable for human beings because you can learn all about the fantastical world.
01:45It's also dangerous because all the secrets and defenses of all the good creatures are in this book,
01:50so the bad creatures would love to get their hands on this field guide.
01:54So you should be careful before you decide to open it and learn the information inside.
01:58The most important object I'm going to show you today is the seeing stone.
02:02The seeing stone is a rock that is in a hole naturally bored into its center.
02:07If you look through it, you'll be able to see all the creatures of the fantastical world that are around
02:12you all the time,
02:13and you just aren't able to witness them.
02:15I created a little monocle to hold my seeing stone so I can run with it,
02:19which you also don't have to do if you're being chased by goblins or something.
02:21So now I'd like to give you this seeing stone.
02:26I'm going to place it over your eye and then you'll be able to witness all of the creatures of
02:31the Spiderwick Chronicles.
02:39Now that you've spread salt around yourself and you have your seeing stone,
02:44I can introduce you to some of the characters of Spiderwick Chronicles.
02:47The first is Thimble Tack.
02:49Thimble Tack is a brownie, which is a very common fairy creature found around houses.
02:54Often times if you've lost a sock in the laundry or can't find your keys,
02:58it's because your house brownie has moved it for you and not told you about it.
03:02But they're very loyal, very good servants, they keep things organized,
03:07they try to keep things clean,
03:08and Thimble Tack is a particularly good brownie and a very good friend to Arthur Spiderwick and the Grace children.
03:14However, you've got to be careful not to make a brownie angry,
03:17because if you do, they'll get very crazy and turn into a boggart,
03:21explode to twice their size and get covered with green boils and become very mischievous.
03:26They'll make messes, they'll tie your hair to the bedpost,
03:30and you really just don't want to see them get like that.
03:33So that's why you keep the honey around,
03:35because if the boggart is angry, you give him a little bit of honey on the cracker,
03:39they'll eat it, and she'll calm down, he'll be appeased,
03:43and will shrink back down to his normal size and become very helpful again,
03:46and probably clean up the mess he made for you.
03:48So Thimble Tack is a very good person to have on your side and a very good friend.
03:56The next creature is Hogsqueal, and Hogsqueal is a hobgoblin.
04:01I know he's not the most attractive creature in the fantastical world,
04:04he's part pig and part bat and part monkey,
04:07and he's not completely trustworthy either.
04:09He's always going to be out to serve himself,
04:11and will get easily distracted if a bird flies by,
04:14because he loves to eat birds.
04:16However, he is a good person to have in a tight spot,
04:20and if he spits in your face, don't take offense, he's trying to help.
04:24The spit from a hobgoblin will actually give you the sight into the fantastical world,
04:29so you don't even need a seeing stone after you've been spit in the face by a hobgoblin.
04:32A little gross at first, but you'll get over it.
04:35And Hogsqueal is somebody who is dedicated to fighting against the bad creatures of the fairy realm,
04:40so he's somebody that you'd like to have on your side in the fight.
04:49I don't want you to be scared, but I'm going to introduce you to the most frightening creature
04:53in the entire fantastical realm, and that is the ogre, Mulgarath.
04:57Mulgarath is dangerous because he's a shapeshifter.
05:00He can appear to you as an old man, or as a crow, or even as your best friend,
05:05but you cannot trust him, because in his scariest state, he's ten feet tall,
05:10with big horns coming out of his back and long teeth,
05:13and he'll sound like a dinosaur if he's running down the trail chasing after you.
05:18However, if you spread the salt around your house like I told you to,
05:21and you have plenty of tomato sauce in the kitchen, you should be safe from him.
05:25Don't be foolish. Give us the book.
05:29The next creature is Redcap, who's a bull goblin.
05:32Why is he called Redcap?
05:33Because his hat is something he stole off of a Revolutionary War soldier after a battle,
05:39and he's a very nasty guy.
05:41His breath smells bad. He's got gross teeth.
05:45He's Mulgarath's right-hand man, and he commands an army of goblins,
05:49so he's somebody you don't want to mess with.
05:51However, the good news is he's a little bit stupid, so you could probably trick him.
05:55You could lure him into a trap with tomato sauce, or get him to run into your line of salt,
06:02and he'll burn his feet.
06:04So, don't be scared of Redcap, but don't mess with him.
06:11Another creature that's very scary is the troll,
06:14which lives underground and burrows tunnels,
06:17and you don't want to get stuck in a tunnel with a troll, believe me.
06:23But not all the creatures in the fantastical world are scary.
06:26There's also beautiful sprites, like flower sprites and water sprites,
06:31who will bring you lovely berries to eat.
06:33And then little sylph, which make up the head of a dandelion.
06:37They're the smallest creatures in the fantastical realm.
06:39On the other end of the spectrum is the griffin.
06:42Byron the griffin is a big, beautiful creature that's part lion and part eagle,
06:48and is huge enough that you and your friends can ride in his back.
06:52Now, let's get onto Byron's back and fly into the world of Spiderwick.
06:58Now!
06:59Now!
07:01Now!
