The story takes place in the years leading up to the American Civil War. It follows cavalry officers Jeb Stuart, played by Errol Flynn, and George Armstrong Custer, played by Ronald Reagan, as they serve in the American West during a period of intense conflict over slavery.

Their mission brings them into confrontation with the abolitionist John Brown, portrayed by Raymond Massey, whose increasingly violent campaign against slavery leads to a dramatic struggle.
