Deep in the rainforests of southeastern Australia lives the superb lyrebird, a ground dwelling pheasant sized bird with an unbelievable vocal talent. Male lyrebirds possess the most complex vocal organ of any songbird, allowing them to produce two pitches simultaneously and reproduce virtually any sound in their environment.
While their natural courtship display involves mimicking up to twenty other bird species, lyrebirds living near human activity began copying man made noises. Visitors to nature reserves and logging areas were stunned to hear wild lyrebirds reproducing the mechanical whir of chainsaws, the sharp click of camera shutters, and even wailing car alarms with pitch perfect accuracy.
Fascinatingly, because young male lyrebirds learn songs from older generations, some birds continue mimicking chainsaws and car alarms decades after the original sounds vanished from their forest. This incredible acoustic culture is passed down like folklore through generations of wild birds.
