Grease-covered kitchen cabinets do not always need harsh chemicals to look clean again. Here, the surprising fix is to use a little oil on the thick, sticky buildup, let it sit, and then wipe away the old grease from cabinets near the stove without endless scrubbing.
The method starts with removing and soaking greasy handles, then applying a thin layer of food-safe oil or cooking oil to the hardest, most baked-on spots. After about 10 minutes, a soft sponge lifts away the loosened grime, and the cabinets are finished with a gentle dish soap wipe, a rinse, and a dry cloth. The video also warns against strong degreasers on wood, which can damage paint and finish, and shows how to nourish the wood afterward with a light coat of polish or food-safe oil.
Created for kitchen cleaning, grease removal, cabinet cleaning, deep cleaning, and old-fashioned home care, this practical guide is useful for anyone dealing with sticky cabinet residue, cooking oil buildup, and stubborn grime on painted or wooden surfaces. It is especially helpful for viewers searching for cleaning hacks, kitchen cabinet restoration, and gentle wood-safe cleaning methods.

00:00You have a kitchen cabinet gone truly thickly greasy, the one by the stove most likely,
00:06with that dark, sticky, tacky, hardened layer of old cooking grease built up so thick that your finger leaves a
00:13mark in it.
00:14And you have scrubbed at it with soap and water till your arm ached and made no dent.
00:20And you are ready to give up and call it ruined.
00:23But before you do, let me tell you a thing that sounds completely backward,
00:27so backward you will think I have lost my senses.
00:31And yet it is the very thing that works when all the scrubbing has failed.
00:36To get that thick grease off, you do not scrub it with more water and soap.
00:41You put oil on it.
00:43Yes, oil on a greasy cabinet.
00:46It sounds mad, I know, but it is the secret the scrubbing never taught you.
00:51And today I am going to show you exactly how it works and how to do it.
00:55So you lift that thick old grease clean off and bring the wood back, without a harsh chemical and without
01:02ruining the finish.
01:04Let me show you.
01:05Here is the thing to understand first.
01:08For it is the secret that makes the whole backward thing make perfect sense.
01:12Like dissolves like, and grease dissolves grease.
01:17Water and grease will not mix.
01:19You can scrub greasy wood with soapy water all day, and the water just beads and slides right off the
01:26hardened grease and never lifts it,
01:28which is why your scrubbing failed.
01:30But oil and grease are of a kind, and alike things dissolve one another.
01:36So when you put a clean oil onto that thick, hardened old grease, the oil melts into it, softens it,
01:44dissolves that baked on crust the water could not touch, and loosens it from the wood.
01:49So you can then wipe the whole of it, the old grease and the oil together, right off.
01:55That is the whole backward secret.
01:57You fight grease with grease, oil dissolving oil, where water never could.
02:02Hold that, and the method follows plain.
02:05Now let me show you the way.
02:07Quick word before we go further.
02:08My name is Esther Yoder, and the old household ways handed down to me, the kind I am sharing today,
02:15and a great many more besides, are far more than I could ever fit into one video.
02:21I have gathered the whole of them into a book, and you will find it at EliasYoder.com.
02:26If today's tips serve you, that is where the rest of what my mother and grandmother taught me lives, all
02:33in the one place.
02:34Now, to the grease.
02:35My grandmother kept a kitchen of good wood, and knew every trick for it, and she had a saying that
02:41fits this exactly.
02:42That sometimes you fight a thing with its own kind, for like loosens like where force never will.
02:49She meant that the wise woman does not always meet a trouble head on with force, but understands its nature
02:56and uses a thing of its own kind to loosen it.
02:59The oil for the grease, the acid for the mineral, each trouble met with its own true match.
03:05And thick grease, dissolved by a clean oil, is the very picture of it.
03:10So here is her kind of fight it with its own kind wisdom, the oil for the grease, step by
03:16step, gentle on the wood.
03:18But before the first step, the most important rule of this whole job, the thing you must never do, so
03:24heat it.
03:25Do not use a harsh chemical degreaser on your wood cabinets.
03:29I know the thick grease tempts you to reach for the strongest thing on the shelf, but hear me, for
03:35this ruins cabinets.
03:36A harsh degreaser is so strong, it strips the very oil out of the wood, drying it.
03:43And worse, left to sit and dwell on the wood even a few minutes, as you would leave it to
03:48cut the grease, it dissolves and eats the finish itself.
03:52So that wherever you sprayed it, wherever it ran and splotches, the finish is ruined, marred, and dulled, and no
03:59scrubbing brings it back.
04:00So no harsh degreaser on wood, ever, however thick the grease.
04:05The gentle oil and soap way I am giving you lifts it without harming a thing.
04:11Never a harsh degreaser on wood.
04:13That is the rule above all.
04:15Now, the first step, the knobs and the pulls.
04:18And there is good reason to start here.
04:20Those knobs and handles are the greasiest things on the whole cabinet, where every greasy fingered hand has grabbed them.
04:27And if you leave them greasy while you clean the rest, every time you touch a knob, you spread that
04:33fit grease right back onto your clean cabinet and clean hands.
04:37So you deal with them first and apart.
04:40Unscrew the knobs and pulls right off, and set them to soak in a bowl of hot water with a
04:45couple of drops of dish soap.
04:46A good 10 minutes, which loosens the grime, whatever they are made of, metal or glass or porcelain or brass.
04:53Then a quick scrub with an old toothbrush, and they come up like new, set aside clean to go back
04:59on at the end.
05:00Take the knobs off and soak them first, so you do not spread their grease back as you work.
05:06Now, the second step, and here is the backward wonder itself, the painting on of the oil.
05:12Take a food safe oil, a food grade mineral oil is grand for this, the very kind used to nourish
05:19a wooden cutting board, or a plain cooking oil will serve, and pour a little into a small bowl.
05:25Then take a small sponge or a little brush, dip it in the oil, and paint a thin coat of
05:31that oil right onto the spots of thick, hardened grease on the cabinet.
05:35The worst of it, the baked on crust. I know it feels mad to put oil onto a greasy cabinet,
05:42but remember the secret.
05:44The oil is dissolving the grease, melting into that hard old crust and softening it.
05:50Paint the oil onto the thick grease, thin. The oil goes to work dissolving it.
05:55And the third step, the easiest, is only to wait. You leave that oil on the grease about ten minutes
06:02and let it do its work,
06:03the oil melting into and dissolving and loosening that baked on grease that defeated all your scrubbing, while you do
06:11nothing at all.
06:12Give it its ten minutes. The oil dissolves the grease while you wait.
06:16And the fourth step, the wiping off, where you see the wonder. After the ten minutes, you take a plain
06:22cellulose sponge,
06:24or a soft cloth, no scrubby pad needed at all, and you simply wipe off all the gunk and the
06:30oil together, and it comes away.
06:32The thick, old grease that would not budge, now dissolved and loosened and lifting right off onto your sponge, soaking
06:39into it.
06:40Wipe it all off, and where that hard grease was, the wood comes clean.
06:45You will go through a sponge or a cloth or two, for they soak up the grease, and you throw
06:50the greasy sponge away or wash the cloth hard.
06:53Wipe off the dissolved grease and oil with a plain sponge. The thick crust comes away at last.
06:59Now the fifth step, for once the thick grease is lifted by the oil, you give the cabinet its ordinary,
07:05gentle cleaning to finish,
07:07the plain way I have shown you for wood. Warm water with a little dish soap on a soft cloth,
07:13well rung, not wet,
07:15and wipe the cabinet down with the grain of the wood, top to bottom, to clean away the last of
07:20the loosened grease and any oil left behind.
07:23Then rinse with a second damp cloth, and buff it dry at once with a dry cloth, with the grain,
07:30so no water sits on the wood.
07:31And mind the wood rules as ever. Never over wet the wood, a damp cloth, not a wet one, no
07:39vinegar nor harsh chemical on the wood,
07:41which the oil and soap way needs none of anyway. The gentle dish soap clean with the grain, then rinse
07:47and dry. That finishes it.
07:49And the sixth, the finishing that cares for the wood, the same as I told you before. Once it is
07:55clean and dry, you feed the wood.
07:58For all that grease and cleaning has left the wood dry and thirsty. So you wipe a thin coat of
08:04a wood conditioner,
08:04or a food safe oil over the clean wood, thin, with the grain. And the dry wood drinks it in,
08:11and the color warms and a soft glow comes up,
08:14and the wood is fed and protected. A thin coat, mind, buffed near dry, for too much leaves it sticky.
08:22Feed the clean wood a thin coat of oil or conditioner. That brings up the glow and protects it.
08:27And now the plain safety, gathered up, for though this is a gentle job, there are two cares.
08:33The first, and the great one. No harsh degreaser on the wood, ever, as I said, for it strips and
08:41eats the finish.
08:42The second, about the oil. If you use the food grade mineral oil, know that while it is perfectly safe
08:49on your skin and your cutting boards,
08:51it is not a thing to be swallowed. So when you are done, you put it away up high in
08:57a cupboard, out of reach of the children,
08:59not left about where a little one could get at it and drink it. Keep the oil from the children,
09:05and no harsh degreaser on the wood.
09:08And wear gloves if you like to keep your hands clean, and keep any splatter from your eyes.
09:14Those cares, and it is a safe and gentle job. And here is the honest word on when to use
09:20this,
09:21for I will not have you reach for the oil for every little smudge. This oil dissolving method is for
09:27the genuinely thick,
09:29hardened, baked on grease. The worst case, the cabinet by the stove gone truly bad that your ordinary cleaning cannot
09:37touch.
09:38The when everything else has failed grease. For your everyday grimy cabinets, the plain dish soap and cloth cleaning I
09:46showed you before is enough,
09:48and is where you start. You bring out the oil painting trick only when the grease has got so thick
09:54and hard that the plain clean slides right off it.
09:57And one honest limit. If a cabinet's finish is already ruined, stripped or eaten away, that is beyond the cleaning
10:06and wants a proper refinishing.
10:08The oil trick for the thick, stubborn grease, the plain clean for the everyday, and a ruined finish wants refinishing.
10:15Now think a moment about why we came to believe that thick grease on a cabinet wants the strongest harsh
10:21degreaser on the shelf,
10:23or a new cabinet, when a little clean oil dissolves it off gentle for pennies, because grease dissolves grease.
10:30It is worse than a plot, for no one had to arrange it. There is money in the harsh degreasers
10:36and the special cabinet cleaners,
10:38and in the refinishing, when the harsh degreaser has eaten the finish, and none at all in teaching folk that
10:45there is no more.
10:45The plain backward truth, that you fight grease with oil, not with a harsher chemical.
10:51So the plain old knowing, that like dissolves like, and a clean oil lifts the grease a harsh chemical would
10:58only ruin the wood getting at,
11:00just stopped being handed down, because no one profits by your lifting your grease with a bit of oil.
11:06My grandmother cleaned the thickest grease off her good wood with the gentle ways, and never a harsh chemical, nor
11:14a ruined finish.
11:15And somewhere between her day and ours, we were sold the strongest bottle, and told to blast the grease, and
11:22ruined our cabinets doing it.
11:23The mending of it is a bit of oil, some dish soap, and the backward secret.
11:28You take off and soak the greasy knobs first, so you do not spread their grease back.
11:34You paint a thin coat of food safe oil onto the thick, hardened grease, and let it sit ten minutes
11:40to dissolve it, for grease dissolves grease,
11:43and then wipe it all off with a plain sponge, the stubborn crust lifting at last.
11:48You finish with the gentle dish soap clean with the grain, rinsed and dried, and feed the clean wood a
11:55thin coat of oil.
11:56And you never use a harsh degreaser, which strips and eats the finish, and you keep the oil from the
12:03children.
12:03And your thick, greased cabinet comes clean, and the wood comes back, gentle and for pennies, where you had thought
12:11it ruined.
12:11That is how it comes home, one dissolved crust, one fed panel at a time, the keeping of your own
12:19kitchen back in your own hands.
12:21So here is what I would ask of you.
12:23This week, that worst greasy cabinet by your stove that you gave up on, do not reach for the harsh
12:29bottle.
12:30Try the backward way, paint the oil on, let it sit, and wipe it off.
12:35And come back and tell me in the comments whether that thick old grease did not come away at last,
12:40where all your scrubbing failed, and whether you were as surprised as most folk are, that oil was the answer.
12:47And tell me too, while you are there, your county, and the age of your house.
12:52For the old houses have the good solid wood cabinets that most reward this care.
12:57And I learn from every one of you how the keeping goes where you live.
13:01And if your own mother or grandmother had a way with a thick grease that I have not named here,
13:07tell me that most of all.
13:09For that is how this goes. We share what we were given.
13:13I read every comment, and I learn from you the way the old women learn from one another across the
13:20fence line, one kitchen and one season at a time.
13:23Next time, I will show you the old ways of keeping the grease from ever building up so thick in
13:29the first place.
13:30The wiping of the cabinets after cooking, and the catching of the grease mist before it bakes on,
13:37so that between this rescue of the thick grease and that everyday keeping, your wood cabinets stay clean and glowing,
13:45and never again get so bad that they want the oil trick.
13:50There is a right and an old way to keep wood cabinets clean that runs on gentle cleaning and the
13:57knowing of how to lift grease,
13:59rather than a harsh bottle that ruins the wood.
14:02But this week, you start with the thick grease.
14:05You take off and soak the knobs. Paint the oil on the worst grease and let it dissolve it.
14:12Wipe it off and finish with the gentle clean and a feeding of the wood, and never a harsh degreaser.
14:19And you will understand, as my grandmother did, that sometimes you fight a thing with its own kind.
14:25That grease dissolves grease where water never could.
14:29And that a little clean oil lifts the thick grease that a harsh chemical would only ruin the wood getting
14:37at.
14:37The household kept the plain old way is the one that remembers like dissolves like,
14:44and so lifts the thickest grease with a bit of oil and keeps its good wood whole.
14:50And that is a thing we are only just starting to remember.
14:53I hope to see you at the bottom of the street is a beautiful book that you do.
14:53I am sure as soon as I am.
14:53And at the bottom of the street is in November.
14:53Hopefully you will catch up with some red sex.
