00:00For those of you who bake in one of those modern ovens with the glass door, here is
00:04a thing that drives folk to distraction. That hazy, streaky, cloudy film you can see right
00:10there in the glass of the door, with crumbs and grease marks and streaks caught in it.
00:15And no matter how you scrub the inside of the glass, no matter how you polish the outside,
00:21it will not come clean. And here is why, and it is the thing most folk never work out.
00:27That dirt is not on the inside of the glass, nor on the outside. It is trapped between
00:33the two panes of glass, in the space in the middle of the door where you cannot reach it,
00:38and you can wipe the two faces till your arm aches and never touch it. But there is a way
00:43to get in there and clean that hidden film out, and today I am going to show you exactly
00:48how, step by step, so your oven door comes clear and clean as new. Let me show you.
00:55Here is the thing to understand first, for it is the whole reason the door will not come
01:00clean by ordinary wiping, and once you see it, the fix is plain. A modern oven door is
01:05not one sheet of glass. It is two, an inner pane and an outer pane, with a space between
01:11them. And over the years, through the little vents in the door, crumbs and grease steam and
01:16moisture work their way up into that hidden space and settle on the inner faces of the glass,
01:22the faces you cannot reach, and there they bake on and streak and haze. So the film you
01:28are fighting is on a surface your cloth never touches, sealed inside the door. That is why
01:33no amount of cleaning the two outside faces ever works. And so the only way to clean it
01:38is to open the door up, to separate the panes enough to reach your cloth into that hidden
01:43space, clean those inner faces, and close it back up. Get in between the glass. That is the
01:49whole secret, and the rest is just doing it carefully. Now let me give you the way. Quick

02:22Now, I will tell you plainly, I do not bake in a glass-doored oven myself. My own baking
02:27is done in a different sort of stove. But the principle of this, that the dirt you cannot
02:32clean is often the dirt you cannot reach, and the fix is to open the thing up and get
02:37at it, is a thing every woman who keeps a house understands in her bones. And my grandmother
02:43had a saying for it, that you cannot clean what you cannot reach. So the wise woman opens
02:48the thing up and cleans it proper. She meant that half of what folk give up on as impossible
02:54to clean is only hidden away where the cloth does not go. And the answer is not to scrub
02:59harder at the outside, but to take the trouble to open it up and reach the real dirt. And this
03:05hidden film in the oven door is the very picture of it. So here is her kind of open it
03:10up and reach
03:11it cleaning, given to the oven door, carefully, step by step. But before the very first step,
03:17two plain words of caution, for they matter. The first, and it comes before all else. Make
03:23sure the oven is completely cold and switched off before you touch it, stone cold, so there
03:29is no burning yourself on a warm door nor any danger. And the second is an honest caution
03:34I owe you. Opening up the oven door in this way can, on some ovens, undo the warranty. The
03:41maker's promise to fix it if it fails. So this is a thing to do on an older oven that
03:46is well past its warranty, not on a brand new one. If your oven is new and still under its
03:52warranty, and the film troubles you, better to leave it or ask the maker. For an old oven
03:57and off warranty though, whose hidden glass has bothered you for years, here is how.
04:02Cold and off first. And mind the warranty. Now the steps. The first step is to loosen the
04:09two screws at the top of the door. Open the oven door all the way and look along the top
04:15edge of it, the edge that is uppermost when the door is open. And you will find two screws
04:20there, one toward each end. These are what you loosen to free the pains. And here is a most
04:27important care as you do it, so heat it. On many ovens, those very two screws also hold
04:33the door's handle on. So as you loosen them, keep your other hand under the handle, supporting
04:38it, so that when the screws come free the handle does not suddenly drop and fall on your foot
04:43or clatter down. Support the handle with one hand, loosen the two top screws with the other.
04:49And as the screws come out, notice that the door may be a little spring-loaded, wanting to
04:54separate, so keep a steady hold. Two top screws, loosened with the handle supported.
05:00That is step one. Now the second step, the reaching in. With those two screws out, the
05:06top of the outer pane comes free from the inner, and you can ease the panes apart at the top,
05:11opening a gap between them. And hold the two together with one hand while you reach your
05:16cloth into that hidden space with the other. So now you are in between the outer glass and
05:21the inner glass, at the very faces that were sealed away and hazed with the film. And to
05:26hold it steady while you work, rest the loose front part of the door on a box or a folded
05:31cloth underneath to support it, so it is not straining nor liable to slip while both your
05:37hands are busy. Ease the panes apart, support it steady, and get your cloth into the gap.
05:42That is the reaching in. Now the third step, the cleaning itself, and first, before any cleaner,
05:48get the loose crumbs out. You will very likely find crumbs and bits down in the bottom of that
05:54space and along the edges. So first, with a dry or barely damp cloth, wipe and sweep out all those
06:00loose crumbs and bits, clearing them away, so that when you go at the film with your cleaner,
06:05you are working on the film alone and not smearing crumbs about. Sweep the crumbs out first. That is the
06:12start of the cleaning. Then, the cleaner for the greasy film, and here is the plain, safe,
06:17homemade one I would give you, the same mild cleaner I have shown you for glass and grease.
06:22Warm water with a little dish soap and a splash of plain vinegar. The dish soap cuts the baked-on
06:27grease, and the vinegar cuts it further and leaves the glass clear and streak-free, which is just what
06:33a glassy film wants. Wipe it generously onto the hazed interfaces, top and bottom, and here is a key.
06:40Let it sit a few minutes to soften and loosen that baked-on film before you wipe,
06:44for the little dwell does much of the work. Warm, soapy vinegar water, let to sit a few minutes.
06:50That softens the film. Now the fourth step, the wiping, and here is a clever order that saves you
06:56doing it twice, so mind it. Clean the top pane first, the upper glass, before the bottom. Why?
07:03Because as you clean the top, drips and loosened grime fall downward onto the bottom pane. So if you clean
07:09the bottom first, you would only dirty it again cleaning the top above it, and have to do it twice.
07:15So do the top first, wipe it down well, and let whatever falls fall onto the bottom, which you have
07:21not cleaned yet. Wipe the top clean, rinsing your cloth in clean water several times as it dirties,
07:27for a dirty cloth only smears. Top pane first, so the drips fall onto the dirty bottom, not the clean
07:34top.
07:34Then the bottom pane the same way, rinsing the cloth as it dirties, and here you may need a bit
07:40more elbow
07:40grease if the bottom film is heavier, as it often is. But mind, and this is the great care of
07:46the whole
07:46job, this is glass and glass scratches, so you use only a soft cloth and your gentle cleaner, never a
07:53harsh gritty scrubber nor a scraper that would scratch it forever. Gentle on the glass always, and into the
07:59little corners with the corner of your cloth. And the fifth step, which finishes it and makes all the
08:04difference between a clear door and a streaky one, buff it dry. Once the film is cleaned off and rinsed,
08:11take a dry cloth, a soft one, and wipe and buff both panes dry, top and bottom, until they are
08:18dry and clear,
08:19for this is the same lesson I have given you for the shower glass and the windows and the cooktop.
08:24The drying is not an afterthought, it is the very thing that leaves the glass streak free and gleaming,
08:30rather than dried with spots and smears. So wipe away every bit of the cleaner and buff it dry,
08:37and the glass comes up clear as new. Buff it bone dry, that is what leaves it streak free.
08:43Now, the last step, putting the door back together, and there is one small thing folk lose or forget that
08:49matters, so mark it. When you took those two top screws out, you may have found on each a little
08:55metal spacer, a small ring or sleeve. Do not lose those, and put each spacer back on its screw as
09:01you reassemble, for the spacer holds the two panes the right distance apart, so the door sits true.
09:08Leave it off and the door will not close right. Then line the panes back up, start both screws by
09:14hand,
09:14and tighten them, and here is a care. Do not over tighten them. Snug them, firm but not forced,
09:21for over tightening can crack the glass or strip the screw. And tighten a little on the one,
09:26then a little on the other, back and forth, so the door draws together even. Spacers back on,
09:32screws snugged, not forced, and the door is whole again, and clear. And a plain word of safety gathered
09:39up as ever. The oven cold and off before you start, always. Keep to the plain safe cleaner,
09:45the dish soap and vinegar, and never mix your vinegar with bleach, for the two make a poison gas.
09:51Keep those little screws and spacers safe in a dish so none are lost. Be gentle on the glass,
09:57no harsh scrubber. And mind the warranty, as I said, doing this only on an oven well off it.
10:03Those cares, and it is a safe and satisfying job.
10:06Now think a moment about why we came to believe that a hazed, filmy oven door is simply how it
10:12is,
10:13a thing to live with, or a reason to call a repairman, or even buy a new oven, when opening
10:19it up and
10:19wiping the hidden glass brings it clear as new in half an hour for nothing. It is worse than a
10:25plot,
10:26for no one had to arrange it. There is no profit in teaching folk that the dirt they cannot clean
10:31is only the dirt they cannot reach, and that a couple of screws and a soft cloth get them to
10:36it.
10:37There is profit only in the repairman's call, and the new oven bought because the old one looks dirty.
10:43So the plain old sense of it, that you open a thing up and clean the real dirt rather than
10:48scrub forever
10:49at the outside, just stopped being handed down, because no one profits by your reaching the hidden
10:54grime yourself. My grandmother opened up and cleaned proper whatever could be opened,
10:59and never gave up on a thing as uncleanable for want of reaching it, and somewhere between her
11:04day and ours, we were taught to scrub the outside and give up. The mending of it is a screwdriver,
11:10a soft cloth, and a little care. You make sure the oven is cold and off, and mind the warranty.
11:16You loosen the two top screws supporting the handle, and ease the panes apart to reach the hidden glass.
11:22You sweep out the crumbs, cut the greasy film with warm soapy vinegar water let to sit a few minutes,
11:29wipe the top pane first and then the bottom, gentle on the glass, and buff it dry to clear. And
11:35you put
11:35it back with the spacers on and the screws snugged, not forced. And your oven door comes clear and clean
11:41as new, for nothing, where you had thought it ruined for good. That is how it comes home. One reached
11:48pane,
11:49one buffed glass at a time, the keeping of your own house back in your own hands. So here is
11:54what I
11:54would ask of you. This week, if your glass oven door has that hazy film you had given up on,

12:00oven is well off its warranty, open it up and clean the hidden glass the way I showed you, cold

13:27But this week, you start with the hidden glass. You cool the oven and mind the warranty. Loosen the two
13:34top screws
13:35with the handle supported. Reach into the hidden space. Sweep the crumbs and cut the film with soapy vinegar water.
13:42Wipe top, then bottom, gentle on the glass. Buff it dry, and put it back with the spacers and snug
13:49screws.
13:50And you will understand, as my grandmother did, that you cannot clean what you cannot reach.
13:55So the wise woman opens the thing up and cleans it proper. That the film that defeated all your scrubbing
14:02was only hidden between the panes where your cloth never went. And that half of what we give up on
14:08as
14:08uncleanable is only dirt we never reached. The household kept the plain old way is the one
14:15that remembers to open a thing up and clean the real dirt rather than scrub forever at the outside.
14:21And so brings clear again what others give up as ruined. And that is a thing we are only just
14:27starting to remember.
