In the cold forests of Alaska and Canada, the wood frog performs a miraculous survival trick every winter. As temperatures drop below freezing, this small amphibian literally turns into a block of ice. Its heart stops beating completely, its blood stops flowing, and its breathing ceases. To an outside observer, the frog appears entirely dead.
However, the wood frog has an incredible biological superpower. Before freezing, its liver floods its bloodstream with massive amounts of glucose. This high concentration of sugar acts as a natural antifreeze inside its vital organs and cells. While water surrounding the cells freezes hard, the inside of the cells remains liquid, preventing ice crystals from destroying the body tissue.
When spring arrives, the frog simply thaws from the inside out. Its heart automatically restarts, and within hours, it hops away as if nothing happened. Scientists continue studying this species to improve human organ preservation and cryogenics.
What do you think about this natural superpower?
