00:00Earlier this week, Florida Senator Rick Scott warned those in evacuation zones to, quote,
00:05get the hell out and do not die. So did people listen? Senator Rick Scott joins us now with
00:13more. Senator, did you feel like people listened? Absolutely. I've been talking to sheriffs and
00:21mayors and police chiefs and fire chiefs all across the panhandle all day today, and I did
00:27yesterday also. Yeah, I think, I mean, Floridians are smart. They've been evacuating. It's too late
00:34to evacuate now. Now you've got a shelter in place. The goal here is nobody die. The whole goal is
00:40you keep everybody alive. Nobody die. We can rebuild all these homes and businesses. You just
00:46can't rebuild alive. Take care of your pets. So I'm very optimistic that people are listening. But
00:53you know, we're not over this tonight when it passes. It's going to be saturated ground. Trees
00:59are going to fall. Power lines are going to be down. You're going to be out of power. I think
01:03there's already 300 households, 300,000 households without power in Florida. So, but everybody,
01:09the Calvary's coming. Florida Power and Light has 12,000 people. Our fire chief's around. We've got
01:14search and rescue. You know, people are going to be coming in tomorrow, but you have got to be safe.
01:19So you've seen a lot of hurricanes. You've seen a lot of hurricanes as a lawmaker.
01:24And it's always interesting because Floridians are always, they always remember the character of
01:29every single hurricane that comes through. What, how can you describe this hurricane? What,
01:35what do your fellow Floridians need to know about the way this hurricane is moving and how its activity,
01:44why its activity is so dangerous?
01:48Well, I think it's similar to Michael back in 18, where it came up, hit directly into Mexico beach
01:53and people died because they, they, they looked at the category and said, Oh, it's only a category one.
01:59Well, it was always going to be nine foot of storm surge. And that's what kills you.
02:02So I think, I think the death through storm surge, uh, in some of these hurricanes is really waking
02:08people up about the risk of water. Um, but that's what, you know, it's, we're gonna get a lot of
02:12rain.
02:13We're gonna get a lot of tornadoes. Uh, but I think people are listening because they've seen the
02:18devastation. They know, they know the stories of people that have died. I remember being on Mexico
02:22beach the day after the hurricane, a young man, a man trying to find his mom. They found her four
02:27days
02:27later dead. We heard from governor DeSantis earlier today. Um, how confident are you that the state
02:35government is prepared, uh, for whatever comes? We have a great emergency management team. It's,
02:42but here's the deal. It starts with you as an individual. Then we can't do anything for you.
02:47If you do stupid things. Number two, the next line of defense is all local government and our local
02:52government shares. Well, then the state comes in and then the federal government comes in as a payer
02:58to help wherever the governor asks for help. Uh, the federal government doesn't have first responders.
03:04They have a checkbook and I'm going to make sure I've talked to president Trump. Um, I talked to
03:09him day before yesterday. We've stayed in contact through text. He will make sure the federal government
03:14does its part. And, uh, is there any way you can talk to whoever it is that names these things?
03:20Because the name they came up for this one is impossible.
03:26Well, as you, as you know, we have a lot of Hispanics in our state. And so I say this
03:32is not an uncommon
03:33name. Um, but yes, it might be easier if it was Scott. Well, the way you just said it made
03:38it sound,
03:39uh, very easy. I'm, I've been stumbling over it all day. Uh, Senator Rick Scott, thank you so much.
