Atahualpa, the last emperor of the Inca, paid one of history's largest ransoms in gold and silver for his freedom after being captured by Francisco Pizarro. He fulfilled the deal exactly as promised — and was executed anyway.

00:07Atahualpa was the emperor of the Inca,
00:10having just won a long civil war against his brother Huascar for the throne.
00:14When the Spaniard Francisco Pizarro arrived with a tiny army,
00:19Atahualpa agreed to meet him in the square of Cajamarca.
00:22Surrounded by thousands of unarmed attendants,
00:25confident the meeting would be peaceful.
00:27But the Spanish ambushed them with cannons and cavalry
00:30Thousands of Atahualpa's people were killed
00:33And the emperor himself was captured
00:35In captivity, Atahualpa offered Pizarro a deal
00:39Fill the room where he was held with gold once
00:41And with silver twice
00:43In exchange for his freedom
00:45Pizarro agreed
00:46For months, gold and silver poured in from across the empire
00:50Until the room was filled exactly as promised
00:52But despite receiving the full ransom
00:55Pizarro put Atahualpa on a sham trial with fabricated charges
00:59And sentenced him to be burned at the stake
01:02Fearing that burning would prevent his soul's journey to the afterlife
01:06Atahualpa accepted baptism at the last moment
01:09His sentence was commuted to strangulation instead
01:12He was executed on July 26, 1533
01:16And with him, the last free Inca empire came to an end
