00:02This video is brought to you by Order of the Sinking Star, available now on Steam, Nintendo Switch 2, and
00:09PlayStation 5.
00:11Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down the most extensive, elaborate puzzles in video game history.
00:25Skipping Near Beams, Order of the Sinking Star
00:28What makes Jonathan Blow's massive puzzle adventure, Order of the Sinking Star, so special is how seamlessly simple rules weave
00:36into mind-bending challenges in the game.
00:38Take this sprawling archipelago puzzle. On the surface, it takes familiar mechanics you already know, like the light beams and
00:45gems from one world, along with skipping stones of another world.
00:48For the game, it appears simple at first, but when the world's mechanics start to merge, like in this example,
00:53and the game systematically pushes those core tools to their absolute limit, the game gets even more exciting.
01:00Instead of isolated challenges, you're embarking on a continuous, multi-layered journey, even discovering hidden verticality in places you'd least
01:08expect.
01:08It's a testament to how elegant design can transform straightforward elements into a deeply complex, interconnected playground without ever revealing
01:16its secrets too soon.
01:18TEST CHAMBER 18
01:20TEST CHAMBER 18
01:44TEST CHAMBER 18
01:48TEST CHAMBER 18
01:48And requires pulling each one of them off with pristine accuracy and timing.
01:53Whether it's rushing to move an energy pellet into the right location, or narrowly avoiding GLaDOS' turrets, it's sure to
01:59test your patience.
02:00Even worse is the advanced version of the puzzle, which removes certain facets and requires much more precise aim.
02:07TEST CHAMBER 18
02:14The Ticket Printer
02:15Grim Fandango
02:18Looks like these cats are almost scruff and scruff.
02:21Grim Fandango may have a passionate cult following, but it also features some of the most obscure solutions to puzzles
02:27in the entire adventure genre.
02:29In year two, protagonist Manny Calavera gets a ticket printer, which he must use to create a forged betting stub
02:35for a previous race in order to progress.
02:38There's just one problem. How do you figure out the correct day, week, and race number to enter?
02:44Well, a memorial for a racing cat mentions him dying in the second week of the season, while a specific
02:49photo shows an event during race six.
02:52As for Tuesday, an NPC mentions Kitty Hat Tuesday, and everyone in the photo is wearing cat ears.
02:59What do you want?
03:00The Challenge, The Witness
03:08Jonathan Blow's The Witness tasks you with completing a multitude of grid-based puzzles across a vast island.
03:15The peak of the game's difficulty is accurately named The Challenge, which you can't complete until you've done everything else.
03:22You must first have activated all 11 lasers in each area shining towards the island's mountain, which then leads you
03:28to a deep cavern system with even more puzzles.
03:31Eventually, you will reach a record player, which acts as a timer for the hardest test the game has to
03:36offer.
03:37You must complete 14 different puzzles with combinations of mechanics within the six and a half minute song.
03:43They're procedurally generated too, so there's no memorizing solutions or looking up a guide.
03:49The Cat Hair Mustache Puzzle
03:52Gabriel Knight 3, Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned
03:56Now what is it, Knight?
03:58If a single puzzle has its own dedicated Wikipedia page, you know it's worth a mention.
04:04At a certain point in this point-and-click adventure, the main character must disguise himself as another character, a
04:09detective, in order to steal his motorcycle rental.
04:12You first have to gather a group of items, the most notorious of which is a fake mustache, despite the
04:18fact that the person Gabriel is impersonating doesn't have any facial hair.
04:22You do this by placing some tape near the bottom of a door and spraying a cat with some water
04:28to make it run into the tape, which some of its fur clings to, giving you your mustache.
04:32This completely bonkers solution is clearly something most players did not think of.
04:39Ah, Monsieur Mosley. Yes, I have a reservation for you. One moment.
04:43The Mantra Puzzle, La Mulana.
04:45This indie platformer follows an explorer braving a treacherous tomb, yet the puzzles are far more troublesome than anything else
04:53you'll find.
04:53In order to reach and fight the final boss, you have to solve a cryptic puzzle with multiple steps.
04:59On top of needing several other items, you have to find eight hidden mantra tablets, one in each area of
05:05the game, decipher them, and chant them at a specific spot in a very specific order.
05:11Otherwise, it won't work.
05:13Finding the locations is a pain.
05:15Each tablet has a clue for the area, but you have to use a compass to find your spot, then
05:20map it to each area's backside to find where you should chant.
05:24The Rabbit Mural.
05:25Animal Well.
05:32There are a lot of mysteries to dive into with Animal Well, but there's one puzzle that confused players for
05:38a while after the game's release.
05:40Within the ostrich area, you can find a mural of a rabbit and a panel that allows you to change
05:45each individual pixel of the picture, of which there are 50.
05:49Hidden underneath is a much smaller room and a puzzle piece that shows you what to change one of the
05:54pixels to.
05:55Most players expected to find the other 49 hidden across the game, but that's not the case.
06:01That single puzzle piece is actually different between playthroughs.
06:05The only way to solve the puzzle and change the mural was by talking with other players and seeing which
06:10piece they had.
06:12The Fire Marble Puzzle.
06:14Riven.
06:14You can't make a list of the most elaborate video game puzzles and not mention the Myst series, which has
06:19several doozies that would fit comfortably on the list.
06:22However, the Fire Marble Puzzle from the second game, Riven, has plagued more players than most others.
06:28Within the puzzle, each of the marbles corresponds to a different dome on one of the game's islands.
06:33However, there is an absurd amount of possible slots in which to put them.
06:38Not only do you need to figure out which color is which dome, you also have to use complex mapping
06:43devices on each island to decipher where each marble goes.
06:47We hope you wrote all that down.
06:49The Golden Path.
06:50Tunic.
06:51Inspired by The Legend of Zelda, yet significantly harder in several ways, Tunic is one of the more challenging indie
06:57games to release in recent memory.
06:59Throughout the game, you can collect in-game manual pages, which teach you about certain mechanics while also hiding several
07:05secrets and even featuring a decipherable language.
07:08The Golden Path is one of those pages which features a 5x5 grid with different numbers.
07:13Each number corresponds to a different page, each of which hides a different piece of the path.
07:19By putting all 25 pieces together, you can figure out the puzzle's solution.
07:23It's understandably a lot of work, especially if you miss any pages, yet utterly satisfying when it all comes together.
07:30The Black Monolith.
07:31Fez.
07:32The mystery of the Black Monolith befuddled players for years, even if they were eventually able to make it past.
07:39You can only reach the puzzle after you've beaten the game and started a New Game Plus save file, which
07:44is needed for the First Person View function.
07:46Near the start of the game, you can find a hidden, seemingly empty room.
07:50By going into First Person View, you can see a path on the ground, which corresponds to a specific map
07:56you can find elsewhere.
07:57The map gives you a code, which causes the Black Monolith to appear.
08:02Unfortunately, the second half of the map is burned, and so no one knew what to do.
08:07Eventually, fans banded together to brute force their way through, trying different combinations of 7-button inputs,
08:13which took more than 66,000 attempts over 18 hours.
