00:00Hello, this is Patrick with New Jersey's Outdoor Adventures YouTube channel.
00:04I'm here in Ocean Grove, New Jersey, beautiful Ocean Grove,
00:08hanging out my van for the day, and I bumped into a very nice gentleman named Kenny.
00:14Kenny has a 2002 Explore van conversion.
00:19It's a camper van conversion, and he was nice enough.
00:22He's going to offer us a tour today.
00:24Hello, Kenny.
00:25Hey, Patrick. How you doing?
00:26I'm all right.
00:27So tell us a little bit about your van and how you're using it,
00:31and maybe show us around, outside and inside, if you have time.
00:36I'd love to.
00:37Well, this is a 2002 Explorer, and I had a van before this.
00:43It was a pleasure way, but I had seen this on YouTube, and I had always been looking for one.
00:49When I got this one, it was in Arizona.
00:53I saw it on Craigslist, got it in Arizona, flew out the next day.
00:57I picked it up and drove it back.
00:59At the time, when I first got it, it was from the desert.
01:02It was very dry.
01:03It has no rust on it whatsoever, but it was in a desert, and everything was really dry.
01:09So I had to really kind of get it live in it and get it working and oiled, in a
01:17sense.
01:17And so I did have to kind of revive it in a lot of ways.
01:22One of the first things I did was that it had the graphics on it.
01:26I got rid of all the graphics, which was kind of difficult, but I eventually got them all off, which
01:35I was happy to do.
01:39One of the reasons that I like this van and I was interested in it was it had the dually
01:45wheels in the back.
01:46From the experience that I had and from people that I had talked to about these things, these vehicles are
01:52generally very top-heavy.
01:53And this thing, anything I ever heard about it, reports and whatnot, with the duallys, it drove really well.
02:01And to my, I'm very happy to say that it really drives.
02:05It's a fantastic driving vehicle.
02:07You could drive around turns.
02:09You could go 80 miles an hour if you wanted to.
02:12And it's steady as a rock, which is really nice.
02:15So I'm very, very happy about that.
02:16And that was one of the selling points for me.
02:19The reason that I wanted to buy it was because it had that dually conversion in the back.
02:23And I had heard that it handled really well, and it was true.
02:26The engine is the Dodge, the 5.9 liter, which is a real nice engine.
02:31It's a monster of an engine.
02:33The thing just cranks out a lot of power.
02:38So if you want, I can kind of bring you around and give you an idea of what's happening on
02:42the outside of it.
02:43Yeah, we really appreciate it.
02:44Our viewers are very interested in learning a little bit about this van and what features it has.
02:49And maybe a couple tips and maybe some modifications you've done to make it work better for you.
02:55Well, the modifications that I've done really are really just upkeep.
03:00It continually needs upkeep.
03:01One of the things that I got originally when I got it was the refrigerator was blown out, so I
03:05changed the refrigerator.
03:07So it's got a new refrigerator in it, which makes a big difference with this three-way refrigerator.
03:13So that's one of the first things that I did to it.
03:16I changed the refrigerator.
03:18It's got an orny, which is really nice to have.
03:21That was another thing that I really wanted to have.
03:23It's not out now, but it's, you know, when the sun is hot, it's really a good thing to have.
03:30So this is the refrigerator here.
03:33Let me get my keys, Patrick.
03:36Those are just the outside vents we're looking at?
03:38Yeah, these are just the outside vents for the refrigerator.
03:41You know, it's all standard.
03:44It's all, you know, this is the heater.
03:47This is the hot water heater.
03:49One of the other nice things about this is it has a storage area here, which actually comes out.
04:04You can pull this whole rack out.
04:07Wow, you got a whole bike in there?
04:08Yeah.
04:09Unbelievable.
04:10So, you know, this comes all the way out.
04:12So I have a folding bike on there.
04:13I've got my tools in here, and it goes all the way back.
04:16And then there's a top compartment here that goes all the way through.
04:19Oh, you look at that.
04:19It goes all the way through.
04:20Yeah, it goes all the way through.
04:22And does it pull out the other side, too?
04:24Or is it just one side?
04:25The other side is the generator.
04:25Okay.
04:26So, but it pulls out to about here.
04:28Okay.
04:29It's stuff now.
04:29I'd have to take stuff out to pull it out, so I'm not going to do that.
04:32But anyway, that's a nice thing to have.
04:34The water heater, what does that run on?
04:37Is that gas or electric?
04:38Yeah, it's gas.
04:39Propane.
04:40Gas, okay.
04:40And the heat as well?
04:42Yeah, propane and propane.
04:44Okay.
04:44Yeah.
04:44I mean, it's a 2002 vehicle, so, you know, it doesn't, it's not, some of the new vehicles,
04:50obviously, are going to go to electric.
04:52But, you know, they do the DC with the lithium batteries and the solar panels.
04:56This has a solar panel on it.
04:58The reason it came with a solar panel, but it's a very small one.
05:00It's a 15-watt solar panel, which I, which is my next thing that I'm going to do, is to
05:06put a, I'm thinking maybe 165-watt solar panel on there, or 100-watt.
05:10We talked about it today a little bit.
05:13But right now, that 15-watt solar panel with the two regular batteries that it has in
05:19there, it, on a sunny day like today, it recharges everything really nicely.
05:26Back here, obviously, it's got, it's just another storage compartment.
05:30And this is a, this is a fiberglass pack to it?
05:34Yeah, this has just got, you know, a lot of, a lot of different stuff in it.
05:38These are all utility items?
05:39Utilities, you know, that kind of stuff.
05:42Backup camera.
05:43Yeah, what happened, what they did was, is that they, they, they had, this is a Dodge 3500.
05:49So what they did was, is they, they cut it here, and then they added this part over here.
05:55So overall, the length is?
05:57It's 21 feet.
05:5821 feet, okay.
05:59And it's the maximum for a parking spot.
06:01If you want to park anywhere, this is the maximum that, that will be illegal to be in a parking
06:06spot.
06:06And you can see where he's parked here, right in a regular parking lot.
06:10We're in Ocean Grove, right next to Asbury Park.
06:15And he fits right in.
06:17And, you know, you look at my van over there, I fit right in too.
06:22So, obviously, the air condition is up there.
06:24One of the nice things about this particular unit is, is it doesn't have a roof air conditioner
06:29like the regular RVs.
06:31It's got a regular house air conditioner inside.
06:33So, one of the next things that I want to do, this air conditioner works fine, but you
06:38can get a really, a modern, very efficient air conditioner and put it up there.
06:42You can start to get the regular air conditioner.
06:44Maybe some of our viewers are familiar with that, like a road track or pleasure way, they
06:49do something similar, they inset it into the roof?
06:51Yeah, it's a, it's a, it's a, first of all, it's expensive.
06:54It has to go through the roof, it's inset into the roof, so there has to be a special,
06:59you know, mount made for it, so it goes through the roof, so you have the controls on the roof.
07:04This is, when we go inside, you'll see, it's mounted, it's flush mounted on the inside,
07:09interior of the vehicle.
07:10And it's just a regular AC, which is nice, so if anything happens to it, you're not,
07:15you know, you don't have to buy a very, very expensive unit and it's readily available.
07:19You can go to Costco or a appliance store and get one.
07:22Yeah, yeah, which is cool.
07:24This here, as you can see, it's a tooth tear, 30 wide body.
07:28This is the generator here, so it's got a 4,000, uh, watt, uh...
07:33Okay, 4,000 KW, that's gasoline, that runs on gasoline.
07:37Yeah, this runs on gasoline, this runs off the fuel tank.
07:39That's a pretty big power plant for a small motorhome like this.
07:42I see most of them with, like, a 2,500 or 2,800.
07:45Yeah, this'll do it.
07:47When they designed this, they really thought it through, and you got some space above the generator?
07:51Right, it still goes through, yeah, yeah, which is nice.
07:54And, uh, and it's, usually generators are pretty loud from the interior,
07:59but this thing, because the bed is over here, it sits on top of it,
08:02so it kind of muffles the sound of the generator, which is nice.
08:05So, these are all your, you know, outside electric, this is, um, you know, your electric, uh, landline.
08:13So it looks like a 30 amp, 125 volt?
08:16Yeah, 30 amp.
08:16This is also water, and this is water, if you're in an RV park, you can plug that in there.
08:21And how many, how many gallons of water can you hold for fresh water?
08:25Well, what I do is, uh, you know, I don't live here, I, I have lived in this for seven
08:31months.
08:32Wow.
08:32So, I was on the road with it, but lately I've just been, you know, coming out to,
08:37I live in Manhattan, so I've been coming out to the shore and hanging out here.
08:40I've been out here for three weeks.
08:41So, it, it, I hold 25 gallons of fresh water, plus I have a five-gallon reserve tank.
08:47So, if I ever do run really low, I still have that five-gallon reserve.
08:50So, uh, and then I have, you know, regular bottles of water and stuff.
08:54So, I'm carrying about, uh, 35 gallons of water with me most of the time.
08:57Do you find, uh, troublesome to find, get water out on the road, or?
09:02If you're just traveling around?
09:03Well, I've been out on the road, and I've, uh, always figured out a way to get water.
09:07Okay.
09:08Water, you know, when you're, when you're on the road, and when you learn how to live in
09:12these things and to use them, what you'll do is you'll find, you know, your eye is keen
09:17on all of those areas where you think you may be able to find water.
09:21Like, what I, what I did when I was in, uh, on the road, I would go to the beaches,
09:25and
09:25the beaches would have, you know, water around, and I, and I also, I don't really drink the
09:33water, because I don't have a real water filter.
09:35I have a water filter to put it in, but generally, I'm just using water to wash dishes and, and
09:40to take a shower.
09:41Okay.
09:42That kind of thing.
09:43So I wasn't really always super concerned about the, you know, the water content, because
09:47I wasn't drinking out of it.
09:48So you can find water pretty much everywhere.
09:50You just gotta keep an eye out for it.
09:52The beauty about this is the doly wheels.
09:53We talked about that.
09:55Which is nice.
09:59Right.
09:59Uh, this is obviously a dump, dump tank, so, you know, that's your, you have to offer
10:04your dump.
10:04So is it a combination, gray-black tank?
10:07Uh, it's a, no, it's a, each, it's a separate tank.
10:10Separate tank.
10:11But the, but the spigot coming out is, you know, they both flow into it to come out.
10:15So it's like a Y pipe behind there.
10:17Yeah, correct.
10:18And, um.
10:18Here are the, these are the dumps.
10:20Just in case some of the viewers don't know, uh, there's two tanks in most of these RVs,
10:26and, uh, black tank would be toilet waste, and gray tank would be shower waste.
10:30Do you have them?
10:31It says body waste and liquid waste.
10:32Okay.
10:32Right.
10:33And the hole next to it, I guess, is where you store your waste hose?
10:36Yeah, but I keep, I keep it as a bag.
10:38Separate.
10:38Because it's never long enough.
10:39No.
10:39Those things are never long enough.
10:41Uh, the other thing, too, is, is when you're doing these things, at least the way I always
10:45do it is, I always, if I'm going to do the waste tank, these waste tanks, I always do
10:51the body fluids first, and then I, then I do the regular, you know, soapy stuff, dishwashers,
10:56washer stuff, shower stuff, afterwards, the waste water, it's just the gray water, so
11:01it clears out the, the, everything.
11:03Sounds like a good tip for our viewers.
11:05I see, what are these yellow things under your tires?
11:07Uh, well, this is, uh, has a, it has a propane refrigerator.
11:12It's got a three-way refrigerator.
11:13It's got the, so it'll run off, uh, it'll run off, uh, uh, you know, a connection from
11:20a house, a house connection.
11:21It'll run off the batteries in DC when you're on the road, you know, when you're driving,
11:25or it'll run off propane.
11:27When I'm sitting here, I'm running it off propane.
11:29So this, what these do is they level, it's part of the leveling system.
11:35This particular vehicle has airbags in the back, but it does not have airbags in the front.
11:41So I can, I can level it in the back this way and lift it up this way, but in
11:47order,
11:47but, but, but I use these, you know, to overall level it, depending on the, on the angle of
11:53the, so it'd be on, not only for your refrigerator, make it run more efficient, uh, it would also
11:58be for your drains.
11:59I guess if you're parked really crooked.
12:01Yeah, but you know, I'm never going to, you know, in a vehicle like this, unless it was
12:05a four by four, which is not, you know, I'm not too worried about it.
12:08I'm always, you know, I'm always going to be on, you know, a grade that's a mid-grade.
12:13I'm not going to be anything too extreme on this thing.
12:16You know, obviously.
12:19Dodge 3500.
12:21What engine did they put in this?
12:22It's a 5.9.
12:235.9.
12:24Yeah, it's the big one.
12:25It's the, it's the big engine, which is really nice to have.
12:28I mean, it's got a lot of, a lot of power.
12:29I see you got some windows up top.
12:31Yeah, these are just, uh, you know, they have curtains on them and, and basically what they
12:35did was, is they're on this particular vehicle.
12:38Now this, this vehicle was, it's, it's a, it's kind of a rare vehicle.
12:44It's really tough to get.
12:45And I looked for two years for this vehicle.
12:48Uh, it's what I wanted, you know, as you do, as you learn about these things and you learn
12:54what you need and what you don't need, you know, you change and you learn different
12:57things, what you might want and you might not want.
13:00I thought this was the penultimate vehicle and it is a great vehicle.
13:04I love it.
13:05Okay.
13:06Uh, and, uh, but you know, if I was to get something else, I would, there would be certain
13:11things that I would probably want different.
13:13But the thing is, is that that had, it has a raised top.
13:17Uh, and, uh, as you can see, it's a gel coated top.
13:20Um, and those, those are the, uh, those are, you know, uh, lights for extra light when you're
13:26in a sunny area or you want to shave yourself.
13:29Uh, the nice thing about this is it's got the screens.
13:34Uh, you know.
13:35You got some privacy with the curtains too.
13:37Well, you have the curtains.
13:38You need that.
13:39Yeah.
13:39Um, yeah, I mean, it's got all of that.
13:42Uh, you know, there are certain things that I need to do to the vehicle, but, you know,
13:46uh, you can't do everything, so you do things that work for you.
13:52I put, I put this up because I was getting, it was starting to drip inside.
13:56Uh, the, uh, the gasket up here is a little bit dried up.
14:00So, uh, you know, it's got to be good.
14:03But that prevents the water from coming in.
14:06Uh, basically you're walking into the vehicle, it'll open up this way.
14:09Uh, this is an outside shower.
14:12So, you can use this as an outside shower.
14:14This pulls out.
14:15It's got about a, a, a 15-foot hose on it.
14:18Oh, wow.
14:18So, you can, you know, what I normally do is I'll, I'll put it out over on here, on this
14:22side.
14:23And, uh, you know, I'll take a shower that way, which is pretty cool.
14:27Uh, I'll give you, I'll give you a quick show of it.
14:30This is also, here's a cabinet, so you can get it from either end.
14:34I got tools.
14:36I have a lot of tools in the vehicle because I'm always, you know, fiddling around doing stuff.
14:40So, I mean, basically you just pull this out here.
14:43This will go all the way out like this.
14:46Now, I have a, an oxygenator head.
14:49Now, for people who don't know that, it's a, it's a, it's a highly efficient head that uses very little
14:54bit of water.
14:55And basically it gives you a very heavy duty pulse and, and, and, and flow of water, which is real
15:02nice when you're taking a shower.
15:03So, what I'll do is I'll put it on here.
15:05I'll bring this over.
15:09I'll put this in, which I got from Walmart.
15:13Put this like this.
15:14Uh-huh.
15:15Like that.
15:16And then, basically with the oxygenator, there's your shower.
15:19That's great.
15:22I love it.
15:22Uh, so, so it works great, you know.
15:25Uh, and, you know, I'd rather, it's, I mean, it has an interior bathroom.
15:29You can take a shower.
15:31Uh, your, your vehicle has a, a really nice setup.
15:36You don't really have to, it's not as, you know, you just, you just walk in there and take a
15:39shower.
15:39It's great.
15:40I love it.
15:40But this one's a little bit, not as, not as convenient.
15:44Uh, uh, you want to come on in?
15:46Absolutely.
15:46All right.
15:48So, here's the interior.
15:50I don't know where you want to start, but basically, it's only me here.
15:55It's only me.
15:56So, what I did was, I, I, I got the, um, a nice mattress for me.
16:03I mean, two people could fit on here.
16:05Is that a residential, like, twin-size mattress?
16:07Yeah.
16:08Okay.
16:08So, I got a regular, residential twin-size mattress.
16:11And this way, I allowed myself to have seating over here as well.
16:15Uh, you can put a table here, which is real nice.
16:19That's what that socket is on the floor?
16:21Yeah, I'll show you.
16:23So, this goes, so I pull this here, like this.
16:28Uh, pull this out.
16:31Looks like a pretty heavy table.
16:33It looks, back when they built this, this is a pretty high-quality motorhome.
16:37Yeah.
16:39And, like that.
16:41And that's it.
16:43So, it also gives me more surface to work on.
16:46All right?
16:47Also, I have a TV back here, which is cool.
16:50You know, which comes out, you know, and you can, uh, here's the air conditioner I was talking about.
16:56So, you can see if it's a regular house, household unit.
16:59That's brilliant.
16:59I like that idea.
17:00Yeah, it's much better, you know.
17:02How's the noise level compared to a typical RV, uh, air conditioning?
17:07Uh, it doesn't bother me.
17:08No?
17:09Well, look, if you're in, if you're in your house and you put the air conditioner on, is
17:13the air conditioner going to be totally silent?
17:15Unless you have central air conditioning.
17:17But if you're in a room and you have a window unit, usually there's some vibration and some
17:21noise.
17:22But the fact is that it's a lot cooler than it was before.
17:25So, that's really what you're concerned with.
17:27And, um, I don't really, uh, I'm not the type of person that really needs a lot of air
17:33conditioning.
17:34So, what I'll do at nighttime is I'll, I'll open up all of the windows, uh, because they'll
17:40have levers on them or they come up and they have screens on them and everything.
17:43So, I can open up all the windows and I'll put a fan like this small fan here on.
17:48So, I have a few of these.
17:49These are brilliant.
17:50These are great fans.
17:51These are computer fans.
17:54So, if you can get these, if you're in a van and you can get these computer fans, these
17:58are great because they're like, they take no power whatsoever.
18:02Now, is that plugged into a USB?
18:03USB, yes.
18:04Oh, wow.
18:04Okay.
18:05So, you get a few of these things and you've got, you know, you get a lot of, uh.
18:09It says, oh, too cool.
18:11All right.
18:11So, so, it's that kind of thing.
18:14Now, you know, as, as, uh, as in any kind of situation like this, and Patrick will know,
18:20and I guess anybody that's watching that's interested in this will know.
18:23So, every, every section of the van, every little thing of the van is a place where you
18:28to store things so that you can keep them and then take them out when you need them,
18:33but they have to be put back.
18:34So, every little corner that you have in these, in these particular vehicles, you use, you
18:39use it in some way or another.
18:41So, uh, I have these boxes back here, which are really kind of cool.
18:45I use one for my bottles of water, and then I use another one for the laundry and that
18:50kind of stuff, which is nice.
18:52And then these systems down here on the floor?
18:54This is basically your, your heater.
18:56So, if it's cold out, this is the propane heater.
18:59Okay.
18:59And that'll heat up the vehicle.
19:01They use a lot of, uses a lot of propane, but it's, it really heats the place up nice.
19:05Uh, this is just your, you know, your, um, um, uh, electrical system, your fuse box is
19:13all in there.
19:13So, fuses in there are probably a battery charger.
19:15Yeah.
19:16The other thing, the other nice thing about this particular vehicle is, is that the, uh,
19:20water tank is inside the vehicle.
19:22So, that was another thing that I liked about it.
19:24The water tank and, and, and, and the one, and the ones that I, I knew about and the ones
19:28that I had before, uh, the water tank was usually outside of the vehicle, underneath the vehicle.
19:34So, you can really extend your season, do some cold weather camping.
19:37Yeah, you can definitely, you know, you keep everything warmer.
19:39So, the, so the water tank, the 25 gallon water tank is in here.
19:43Now, these are the heaters that are in here.
19:45Okay, so this is all storage, you know, storage.
19:49This is storage.
19:50Shelves.
19:51You know, I put the shelves in.
19:53It's one of the things that I did because I don't, you know, if you're in one of these
19:56vehicles, you're not wearing a suit.
19:57This was like a hanging shirt locker?
19:59Yeah, you're not wearing a suit and you're not too worried about hanging shirts.
20:02You know, you're just, you're worried about, you know, what, what baby suits you're going
20:05to wear.
20:05At least that's what you should be thinking about.
20:08This?
20:10Solo cup on the ceiling.
20:12This is basically, the thing is, this is, um, uh, an LED light, okay?
20:17But it's very bright.
20:19I have that problem in mind.
20:20Okay, so what I did was, I just took a cup and put it up here so it directs the
20:26light
20:26downward.
20:26It's a much softer light.
20:27And plus the red of the cup gives it a little bit of a glow.
20:30And that's it.
20:31You know, this is an electronics box.
20:33You know, it's got, uh, stuff for the DVD, you know, electronics in here.
20:36So when I walked in, I, I saw an inverter there by the door, but I see another inverter here.
20:41Is that a point of use one for making the TV?
20:44This is just for, that's just a TV and a, and a DVD.
20:46Okay.
20:46You know, I mean, the TV is, uh, you can plug into a regular USB, but the DVD player you
20:52can't.
20:53So I just looked it up that way.
20:54This is, you know, food, food storage, that kind of thing.
20:59I just pull them out.
21:00I've got these things here.
21:01These are nice bins that keeps it quiet maybe when you're driving so things aren't
21:04right on around.
21:05Plus it keeps it, you know, you pull it out easy.
21:07You don't have to go looking the way in the back.
21:09That kind of thing.
21:10Fan, you know, uh, you know, what is, I forget the name of the fan.
21:15What is it?
21:15That looks like a fantastic fan.
21:18Fantastic fan.
21:18And that was their King Deluxe model.
21:20It looks like it's remote control.
21:21No, it's not remote control.
21:22No?
21:23No.
21:23Uh, rain sensor.
21:24I see the sticker there.
21:26Parable speed.
21:27We got a thermostat control.
21:29Right.
21:30And a motorized lid.
21:31Yeah.
21:32All right.
21:32That's their, their top model from back then.
21:35Back in the day.
21:35And this is the bathroom.
21:37So it's a gel-coated bathroom.
21:40This is, uh, this is pretty impressive.
21:44Now, looking at this, it's all seamless.
21:48Where the sink is integrated into the walls.
21:50Yeah, it's all seamless.
21:50Got a stainless steel sink.
21:52Right.
21:53What else we got coming on there?
21:55Well, basically, that's it.
21:56I mean, uh, the way I use it is, uh, you know, I just take that stuff out of it
22:01and take
22:01a shower.
22:02Take the flowers out and I take a shower.
22:04Let's say you pull this curtain and you're, you're done.
22:06I guess there's some type of storage underneath the sink.
22:08Yeah.
22:08I mean, it's just basically, you know, more toilet papers underneath.
22:11It's got a gasket on it so it doesn't get wet in there.
22:13That's good.
22:14Yeah.
22:15I mean, back to the day, it was pretty cool.
22:17And this is, uh, just a regular RV style toilet or?
22:21Uh, yeah.
22:22Yeah.
22:22It's, you know, the regular.
22:24Okay.
22:25So it's not a composting toilet.
22:27No, no, no.
22:28It's a black tank.
22:28And you got a little vent on the top.
22:31Yeah.
22:31Fan in the vent, which is nice to have.
22:33If you're taking a shower, it takes all the steam out and whatever else is.
22:37And that's it.
22:38LED lights all around.
22:39Yeah, they are bright.
22:41Yeah.
22:41Yeah.
22:42And, uh, and that's, and actually I like the, I like the way this is set up.
22:47Uh, I know some people that have put, you know, one door here or put a glass door or they
22:51put like a slide.
22:53But this is nice because if you're dressing, you can dress back here.
22:57You just close this door and you have privacy, which is nice to have.
23:01So it's a, it's a good, it's a good set up.
23:03I like the set up.
23:04This is, uh, okay.
23:06So just more of the same.
23:07I mean, regular, a regular stove.
23:10So all your spices are.
23:11No.
23:12Refrigerator's not too much in there now, but probably beer.
23:16That's about it.
23:17It looks like a three cubic foot.
23:19Yeah.
23:19So this is the new, this is the new refrigerator.
23:23You know, it's electronic freeway.
23:26Okay.
23:26So all the controls are up top.
23:28Yeah.
23:28I mean, it works automatically.
23:29And the cooking, uh, situation, two burner?
23:32Uh, two burner.
23:33Yeah.
23:33I just, I generally just using one burner because I'm usually, um, you know, when I'm not traveling,
23:40it's just as easy for me to go somewhere and have something to eat or get some takeout food
23:45or something like that, you know?
23:46So I, I can do that.
23:47But you know, I've got, I've got soup.
23:49I've got hot dogs, I've got beer, you know, that kind of thing.
23:53Um, uh, you know, snacks, you know, some vegetables if I have it, if I want it.
23:59This is more storage.
24:01I put my water up here.
24:02There's a lot of storage in this fan that's, um, yeah.
24:05This is just, uh, plastic containers, that kind of stuff.
24:08This is a convection, uh, microwave oven.
24:11Will that run off your inverter system or you have to run the generator?
24:14No, that runs off the generator.
24:16Yeah.
24:16Okay.
24:16Yeah.
24:16You have to have that, that and the, and the AC.
24:19Right.
24:20Um, now this table will come out.
24:24Uh, one of the things that I did do, which anybody that has an Explorer, if you see, if
24:29you see this setup and you have this particular setup in Explorer, one of the best things I
24:33did on this thing for me was to put this seat in, which turns, it's a swivel seat.
24:38The Explorer, what it had was a stationary seat, only that went that way, which really made
24:44it kind of limited as to how you could use it.
24:47But with this thing, you can go like this and obviously there's a lot more room in it.
24:51And did it come stock with the front swivel seats?
24:53Yeah, everything, everything here, there's the front.
24:56I'm just here, this obviously can be removed.
24:58So this is movable because I need to drive it a little.
25:01I just keep it up because it's, uh, it's just an extra space for me.
25:05Uh, yeah, more storage here.
25:09Uh, this is, okay, these are your controls.
25:11These are your, your, uh, black water, gray water tanks.
25:13This is your, uh, tells you how your battery is and your levels on your tanks.
25:19This is the generator, you know, so you go here, hopefully it'll stop.
25:25It's a lot quieter than my generator.
25:28See how quiet that is?
25:29Yeah.
25:30So with the AC you can hardly, you know, and when you're-
25:32They probably cancel each other out.
25:33Pretty much, yeah, yeah.
25:36Yeah.
25:36Uh, so, and that'll, you know, that powers up, you know, everything you can do that for.
25:41This is just more storage.
25:43A lot of storage in this.
25:45Yeah, just more stuff like that.
25:48And, uh, you know, if, uh, if I have, I mean, if I wanted to, I can put the table
25:54back down here, over here, and I can put a couple of mats here, and I can get some more
26:00sleeping area if that's somebody that wants to sleep over.
26:02Or I can do with the-
26:03Probably be like a queen-size bed at that point?
26:05Yeah, or I can turn the seats around.
26:07Now, we're talking camping out here.
26:09We're not talking about, you know, like, uh, a whole-time thing.
26:12Right, yeah.
26:13So, I mean, so, basically, you could turn these seats around so they're facing one another, and you could put
26:17a mat in between that, and you could sleep there if you had to as well, which I've done, especially
26:22with the kids.
26:24So, this is, of course, that's the backup camera, the backup screen.
26:28It looks like up here is the air suspension controls for the rear.
26:31Right, these are the air suspension controls here.
26:33So, it's got an on-board air compressor.
26:35You can see, I don't know if you can see that.
26:37Yeah, so it's either one of those, right.
26:39So, you turn the engine on, and you can, and you can level out the, uh, you know, the vehicle
26:44with this, with this, which is very cool.
26:46So, everything is LED lights, you know, which is...
26:51I like how you utilized every space.
26:52Even the dashboard has stuff on it.
26:55Yeah, I mean, that's what you do, you know.
26:57Here's my other five-gallon can.
26:58This is my, this is my extra can of water.
27:01Here.
27:02And here's something that I do, you know, just to preserve water.
27:06Uh, because when you're, when you're heating, when you're heating up, sometimes I feel like heating up the water.
27:12Sometimes I'll, I know that I want to wash my body a little bit or something to, you know, just
27:16a quick body, body wash.
27:18Uh, so I'll need a little bit more water.
27:20So, instead of heating water up on the stove to preserve it, because when you, you know, your supplies are
27:26really important when you're doing this stuff.
27:28So, you have to keep an eye on everything that you use and how you use it.
27:30So, you try to minimize everything.
27:32So, when I heat up the water, it takes a few seconds for the water to come into the, into
27:37the faucet area when I heat up the water.
27:39So, what I'll do is I'll take my, my, one of my pots and, and, and, uh, you know, put
27:46the faucet on and run it and let the water get into the pot before the hot water comes.
27:51So, as soon as the water, and then, so that water I'll put in here and put it back into
27:55the tank.
27:55I mean, it's those silly things that you do, but these are the kind of stuff that, these are the
27:59kind of things that you do to preserve your supplies.
28:01So, that, that's because, and I found that, I actually found that I'm saving one or two gallons of water
28:08a week easily.
28:10Normally, you turn the faucet on and wait for the hot water to come in.
28:13But if I turn the faucet on and I have a pile underneath and I put it in here, I'm
28:17saving two gallons of water.
28:18And when you're on the road, two gallons of water is a lot.
28:20Do you have any tips for any new people that might be interested in getting a van and living this
28:27type of lifestyle?
28:28Anything over your, you have a lot more experience than I do, uh, that maybe people overlook or, uh, maybe
28:35some hassles you might have had throughout your process?
28:38Well, I think one of the things that you want to do more than anything is to figure out what
28:43it is that you're actually going to do.
28:45Are you going to be staying on the road? Are you going to be traveling around? Where are you going
28:49to be?
28:50Because you have to start, you have to think about the supplies that you have.
28:54How, how, how are you going to carry your water?
29:00How much water do you think you're going to need?
29:02And your energy, so it's the water and the energy.
29:04The other thing is, do I want to have a bathroom or do I not want to have a bathroom?
29:09Okay, a lot of people, what they'll do is they'll, they have a pot and they'll do whatever they have
29:14to do within the pot.
29:15You know, put it in a bag, they'll bag it and do all that kind of stuff.
29:19So, the things that you, and, and also your sleeping arrangements, how many people do you want?
29:25How many people are you going to be? Are you going to be alone?
29:28Uh, so, it's, when you're thinking about it, you also want to have a vehicle that you feel you're going
29:37to be comfortable in.
29:38I'm a, I'm like 5'8", so I can fit in pretty much anything, pretty comfortable.
29:44But if you're bigger, if you're like 6 foot, you have to take that into account too as to what
29:49kind of vehicle you're going to have.
29:51So, I think your energy supplies, what you, what, do you, do you want solar or do you want to
29:55have a generator?
29:57Do you want to have a generator that's on the vehicle or you want to have a generator that you
30:01can just like put on the ground somewhere so you can run it, so you can run, run your generator
30:06to run an air conditioner or something.
30:08Do you want an air conditioner?
30:09So, it's the type of life that you're willing to live.
30:12Are you going to be alone or are you going to be with someone?
30:15If you're going to be with somebody, then you have to make those kind of decisions as to how it
30:21will be to live in a small space with someone.
30:23So, you want to be, um, easily accessible.
30:27One of the reasons I got, I like this one, was when I was on the road for 7 months,
30:33I was with my girlfriend.
30:34And it didn't have a front area where I could sit and like do work or go on my computer
30:40or anything like that, which this has.
30:43So, I found it really difficult in terms of, of, of trying to, uh, uh, do the things that I
30:52wanted to do.
30:53And also, our sleeping arrangement was different.
30:54She would sleep really super early and I would go to sleep later on because I'd like to sit on
30:58my computer and do things.
30:59So, I think it's, the first things you have to think about is, uh, the space that you want in
31:09the vehicle.
31:10Is the bathroom going to be important for you?
31:13How are you going to take showers?
31:15How are you going to, uh, provide energy for yourself in terms of being able to charge your computer, charge
31:24your phone, charge the things that you need, have lights in the vehicle.
31:29And do you want, one, do you want to have hot water?
31:32Uh, so these are all the kind of considerations that you're going to have to have.
31:36Are you going to be in a cold area or are you going to be in a warm area?
31:40Um, so, um, and then of course, uh, as I said before, the type of vehicle it is in the
31:47space that you have.
31:48Um, so, uh, and what it came down to me also is, does the vehicle drive well?
31:54Am I going to be comfortable driving this vehicle?
31:57Um, where am I going to go with it?
31:59Am I going to go off-road or am I going to just stay and park in Walmarts and that
32:03type of thing?
32:04Um, so, there's a lot of different considerations that you, and the length of time that you're going to be
32:09in a vehicle.
32:11So, it's all, it's a lot of that.
32:13I would suggest that you look on YouTube, look at all the different people that have the different, you know,
32:21vehicles that you might be interested in.
32:22Um, and I would, uh, really take a good look at that and to see how they do it and
32:29what they feel works for them and what doesn't work for them.
32:33Uh, if you don't have a vehicle with any kind of insulation or, or you don't have windows that have
32:38screens on them,
32:40you're going to find, and you're in a place where there's a lot of, uh, mosquitoes at nighttime, and you
32:46have to keep the windows closed,
32:47you're going to find that the heat inside the vehicle is going to be unbearable,
32:51and you're not going to be able to really, uh, survive that kind of environment very long in a comfortable
32:57way.
32:57So, that's the other thing.
33:00Uh, the, the nice thing about this vehicle is that most of the windows here have screens on them.
33:06And I think something that's also very important, and a lot of, this particular vehicle,
33:12one of the things I do not like about this vehicle is the back window doesn't open.
33:17It's a, it's a, it's a huge back window, but it doesn't open.
33:21And because of the way they made the vehicle, there's no back door, they removed the back door.
33:26I find that having a back door and being able to open the vehicle really allows the air to come
33:34in and come through,
33:35especially if you're in a hot environment, you're at a beach or anything like that.
33:38Uh, and I think that's a really important consideration if, how much access you have, uh, to the open space
33:49around the vehicle.
33:50Uh, it really makes, it really makes it a lot nicer if you have a lot of fresh air coming
33:55in,
33:55and you have a light, a lot of light coming into the vehicle.
33:59So, that would be a consideration.
34:01Uh, what I, one of the modifications that I want to do for this vehicle, if I keep it,
34:06is I want to get a window that will open up in the back.
34:10I'm going to modify it so that I have a big window that opens up so that I can open
34:14it up.
34:15And also you can, you know, it's just, it's just a lot nicer.
34:18So that was another, that would be another consideration.
34:20So I think that, you know, it's energy, the, you know, the kind of supplies that you're going to have
34:26in terms of water,
34:28your, your, your ability to survive on the road.
34:31So it's energy, water, uh, food, uh, uh, air, ventilation.
34:41What about safety?
34:43Safety in regards to securing yourself and your, your personal items in the motorhome,
34:49especially people that are traveling across country, going to areas,
34:52they don't know about crime and how safe they're going to be.
34:56I recently read a story online about a couple that, uh, was traveling up to Alaska and their van,
35:02their van broke down and they were, uh, uh, unfortunately murdered.
35:06Uh, what do you, what do you say anything about safety to be mindful of?
35:11Well, I think that when you, uh, you, you, you develop a sense of what's going to be safe,
35:19uh, what's dangerous, uh, and, um, I think it just comes with, uh, with time and experience.
35:33If you are traveling in populated areas, there are always places that you can go where you'll feel more safe,
35:43even if you get chased away.
35:45If you, if you feel that you need to be somewhere and that you're concerned about your safety and whatnot,
35:51uh, but you're afraid that you're going to be chased away because it's an area where they may not want
35:55a van in or anything,
35:56I would take the chance on being chased away and, and, uh, and do that.
36:01I mean, there's always Walmart, uh, there's always, uh, uh, shopping centers that you can go to.
36:08Um, I think you have to be cognizant, you have to be very aware and cognizant of the fact that
36:14there is danger out there.
36:16Uh, I always keep my keys real close to me.
36:20I always keep the vehicle at nighttime ready to go so that if I have to jump on in the
36:27chair and pull out really quickly, I can do that.
36:30So I'm usually, I'll have my keys right next to me somewhere.
36:33I'll have the seats and everything configured so I can, I can move quickly.
36:38Uh, obviously you're going to lock your doors.
36:41Obviously, if you're going to have, um, uh, you know, your windows blocked, you know, I, to tell you the
36:49truth,
36:49I prefer not to, not to block my windows.
36:54All right.
36:55Because I like to see what's going on around me.
36:58Uh, and, uh, and if people are going to be looking in and whatnot, um, I like to also be
37:04able to look out to see what's going on.
37:05So, um, but it depends.
37:08If I want to be, uh, generally I'll leave all, I'll leave my windows open.
37:13A lot of people will put curtains off and stuff like that.
37:16At nighttime in the back of the van, you really can't see in back of the van.
37:20If you're looking in at nighttime, you really can't see in the back.
37:25You can't see if I'm there or not.
37:27Now, if I'm not in the van, if I'm not going to be in this van, if I'm going to
37:33go, let's say, take a walk,
37:34or if I'm going to take a hike or something, I will close it off completely.
37:38So nobody knows if anybody's in there or not.
37:41That's a really good tip.
37:42Okay?
37:43So, when I'm not in the van, I always keep it closed.
37:47So nobody can see in.
37:49So, they're going to think twice before they start trying to get in.
37:53And I think that, and I think if you feel that way, too, as well, I mean, you know,
37:58obviously if you park somewhere and you have everything all covered,
38:01people really don't know if there's anybody in there or not.
38:03So they, and they don't know whether you have a weapon.
38:06The fear of the unknown.
38:08You know, in, in there.
38:09So they're going to be, be careful about it.
38:10But you've got to watch where you go.
38:12You've got to know where you're going.
38:15And you've got to be prepared.
38:18What inspired you to get into this lifestyle?
38:21Because this is a lifestyle.
38:23It's not just a van.
38:24I don't know.
38:25I mean, what inspired me?
38:26I started looking, there was a guy on YouTube, we were talking about it before, called Justin Credible.
38:32Justin Credible, if you ever see this, thanks a lot, bro.
38:34He had the same, he had the same van.
38:37And there was something about it that was really cool about it.
38:41But I, as I think about it, what happened was, is that my girlfriend and I, we went to California.
38:50And we rented a car, and we were driving up Route 1 in California, and we were going into all
38:56these hotels at nighttime.
38:59And one day we're in, we're on the, on one of the cliff areas, over, you know, we're on one
39:05of the overlooks.
39:06We're looking at the water.
39:06We stopped to take a rest.
39:07And some family pulls up in a 4x4 Westphalia, which is a Volkswagen, with the pop-up top.
39:15And it's a 4x4.
39:17And, you know, they all piled out, and I was like, that is like the coolest thing that I've ever
39:22seen before.
39:23Okay, how cool is that?
39:25And they lived in California, and they were traveling around.
39:27I mean, I had known about this stuff before, but I never thought about it.
39:30But when you see it, it's like, why would I want to travel any other way?
39:37So, I got the bug from that point on.
39:41And this particular van, the history of this particular van, it is, it is a West Coast van.
39:46I bought it in Arizona, which I would, and the reason I did, well, I bought it in Arizona for
39:53two reasons.
39:54One is, Arizona, it's, it's obviously, there's no rust.
39:57There was no rust on it whatsoever when I got it.
39:59And it was a very low mileage vehicle.
40:01So, that was a double, you know, a double plus that I wanted to go out there and get it.
40:09Plus, it was what I was looking for.
40:12But, I just like the idea of being able to go and sleep anywhere I want.
40:20I had to go upstate last week to see my daughter.
40:23And I spent two days upstate New York.
40:25This, right now, we're on the Jersey coastline.
40:29In Ocean Grove, Asbury Park, Ocean Grove.
40:33And I went, I saw, went to see my daughter.
40:35And I had no qualms about it.
40:36It was like, okay, I'm going.
40:38I'm out of here.
40:38I mean, she called me up.
40:40She said, come on up.
40:41I said, I'm on my way.
40:42And I went up there and I spent the week up there.
40:44I camped out.
40:45I went to an RV park.
40:47I went driving around.
40:49I saw her.
40:50It was, you know, I did what I had to do.
40:53And it was like, because I know the vehicle so well and because it's set up for me, the way
41:00I want it to be, it was really like being home.
41:03Yeah.
41:04And I got a chance to camp out a little bit, you know, in an RV park, which was kind
41:08of nice.
41:10So, and it was spur of the moment.
41:12I didn't really have to think about it.
41:13I didn't have to make a plan.
41:15And I'm sort of like it.
41:15So the van's always packed and ready to go.
41:18Yeah.
41:19I mean, this van basically, it takes about, it's always, yeah, it's always packed and ready to go.
41:25There are systems that you have to turn off and put back on.
41:30For instance, the refrigerator.
41:31You can't leave the, I don't leave the refrigerator on when I'm gone, obviously.
41:35And I leave it open so that it doesn't, there's no mildew or anything involved.
41:40It gets inside because it's used.
41:43And it's also hooked up to the electric of the vehicle.
41:48So what I'll do is I'll disconnect it from the electrical supply of the vehicle so it doesn't run down
41:53the batteries when I'm using it.
41:56But yeah, I mean, but it's pretty much, everything in this vehicle, I don't have to take out of this
42:02vehicle.
42:03So the clothes that I have in this vehicle are the clothes that I'm going to use when I'm in
42:08this vehicle.
42:11So there's nothing that I have to, you know.
42:14See, I'm new at this and pretty much everything you said is dead on with exactly what I do.
42:20I have clothes specifically that I use in my camper van.
42:23Yeah, right.
42:24So I don't have to unpack and pack stuff.
42:25Yeah, I mean, you know, so, and, you know, the clothes that you're going to wear generally are going to
42:30be casual, very casual.
42:32I have a one, if I have to do something which is less than casual, up a little bit, I
42:40have some clothes that I can wear to look, you know, proper if I'm going out to a proper dinner
42:44or something like that, you know.
42:46So, but very few, most of them is just shorts, sneakers, sandals, that kind of thing, you know.
42:51But I've got a good pair of boots, a good pair of pants.
42:53That's all you need, you know, and that's it.
42:56What about insurance?
42:59You just have a regular RV insurance policy?
43:01Well, I have the RV insurance policy, which is fairly inexpensive for some reason or another.
43:06I don't really quite understand why, but it's not very expensive.
43:09And then I have another policy for road service, which is great.
43:14I mean, if you're going to be in a vehicle like this, you want road service.
43:19You want towing service because you never know.
43:23There's always something that happens.
43:24I had, I was on the road and I had a fuel pump issue.
43:31So they literally had to put this vehicle, this vehicle is, when you put this vehicle on a flatbed truck,
43:37it looks pretty big.
43:39You know, it's like, okay, that's not a car, you know.
43:44So I had the road service, so I would definitely recommend having road service.
43:48There's no question about that.
43:48And any tips for internet, needing internet on the road, anything that you came up with that, from learning from
43:57people online or just from usage?
43:59Well, again, the places, my lifestyle in this van is, I hate to say that I'm a weekender, but I'm
44:09more like a weekender now,
44:11even though I've just spent three weeks in here, it's not really a weekender, but I'm in an area where
44:16there's internet.
44:17I'm not out in the middle of Nevada somewhere, you know, where there's going to have problems with it.
44:23I think that that's another thing that you want to think about, what, you know, how your internet needs, you
44:32know,
44:32what you're going to require from the internet and what you're going to, you know, require to use.
44:36I actually work every morning for about four hours.
44:40I actually work every morning on my computer.
44:42So I have a laptop, not a laptop, I have an iPad that I use, and I do my work
44:50on that.
44:50And it's got a regular, it's cellular, so I don't have to worry about that.
44:55I have a cellular program with my iPad, so whatever work that I need to do, I can do via
45:01the cellular signal.
45:02I don't have to worry about Wi-Fi, which is nice to have.
45:06But also it has a hot spot and that type of thing.
45:09If I was to go out on the road, there would be certain, like I know a few people that
45:15do it,
45:15and they'll have Verizon, they'll have Sprint, they'll have AT&T,
45:21they'll have a couple of programs that they have so that wherever they're in, whatever area they're in,
45:26one of those will generally work the best for them.
45:30But that's if you're going to be on the road for a long time.
45:32There are things that you can get there that will draw in signal even more.
45:38You know, they'll strengthen the signal, a Wi-Fi signal.
45:43I don't have any of that, but if I was to go on the road and I was going to
45:47go West Coast,
45:49and I have been on the West Coast with this, and I generally don't have that much of a problem.
45:56But, you know, and also there are also places that they'll have Wi-Fi so you can get the signal.
46:01If you really need to get a signal, you need to get onto the Internet, you can go to supermarkets.
46:08Like there's Public and there's a few other supermarkets out on the West Coast where they'll have a Wi-Fi
46:14signal.
46:15Or a Home Depot, they'll have a Wi-Fi signal.
46:17Or you'll find places, different stores that have Wi-Fi signals.
46:20You park outside of it and you can use those Wi-Fi signals.
46:24You know, you want to watch a movie, you can do that as well.
46:26So you learn to adjust.
46:28But if I was to go on the road seriously now,
46:31I would make it so that I would be assured that I could get a Wi-Fi or a signal
46:37wherever I am.
46:38So whatever equipment I would need to do, I would get that.
46:41Any final thoughts you want to share with our viewers?
46:44Maybe some of them are going to have probably questions.
46:46I know, you know, these are pretty heavy vans, but about fuel economy and how that plays into this type
46:54of lifestyle.
46:55Well, like we were talking before, you know, you have, I'm retired, even though I still work.
47:04I'm retired from what I did, but I work every day.
47:08So I generate a little bit of money that way.
47:11But I think that some people, it's not that much of an issue because you're saving money on having,
47:20if you're going to be traveling around, you're saving money by being on the road, eating in, cooking, and sleeping,
47:28your sleeping arrangements.
47:29So you're not spending that money that you would normally spend.
47:31But you do need to make some money.
47:39What was the question again?
47:40About fuel economy, because I know a lot of people are building out these new Ford Transits
47:45and the Mercedes Sprinter chassis, and they get pretty good fuel economy, anywhere from 16 to 20 miles per gallon.
47:50This is an older Dodge, and I have an older Ford.
47:53I get 6 to 7 miles per gallon.
47:55Well, I get around 11 to 13.
47:57That's not bad.
47:58That's pretty impressive for a van of this weight and size.
48:01Yeah, 11 to 13 is not bad.
48:02I'm pretty impressed.
48:03And also, it's how you drive.
48:06And it also depends on your elevation.
48:08So if you're in a higher elevations, then you're going up high hills and stuff like that.
48:12Oh, here is definitely something that everyone should know about, that I think is a good tip.
48:18If you know that you're going to be transversing areas where there's going to be lots of different elevations and
48:25whatnot,
48:26what I would normally do is not fill up your fuel tank.
48:30Go to figure out how far your gas is between each other.
48:34Figure out how far you can go with the gas you have.
48:38Keep it half a fuel tank.
48:40Don't fill up your fuel tank and don't fill up your water.
48:43So you want to lighten the load with fuel and water if you're going up a lot of steep grades
48:49and that kind of stuff.
48:50Because actually what that's going to do is that's going to help you get better gas mileage,
48:54and it's going to help you get over the grades that you have to get over.
48:57Because with all of that weight, it really makes it a big strain on some of these engines.
49:02Excellent, Ken.
49:03I really appreciate you spending the time with our viewers here to give a tour of your van
49:08and some of your personal experience and sharing your thoughts on how you use the van
49:13and what you've learned in this lifestyle.
49:15And I really thank you today.
49:17Well, I appreciate you having me on.
49:21I never expected it.
49:23You woke up to me and it's like I hope that it helps somebody.
49:28Yeah, I appreciate that.
