00:31Autobianchi A112 Raleigh, what a wicked little car this is, and great for throwing around
00:37these tight twist-backs. Push it! Woohoo! Oh how good is that? That is brilliant!
00:43This car on these roads, perfect combination. If you think about Italian motoring heritage,
00:51you don't think of these cars, you think about Lamborghinis, Ferraris, you think about Formula
00:561? Of course you do. But actually, there was another element of motorsport that Italy were
01:00really quite successful about. Yeah, rallying. And that's what's brought us back to Italy.
01:06Oh, you could do this all day long. Taxi! Let's go buy some cars! Let's go get some cars.
01:15We've packed our suitcases. And our spanners. For another international adventure. Look at
01:22that! Ha ha ha! We're buying dream machines. I love this place and I love this car! Building
01:31race cars. Woohoo! And rescuing some of the finest. This is nuts! Look at that, it's on free will!
01:38The fastest. And funniest motors. That feels like something's gonna fall off. Ha ha ha!
01:47With the help of local wheeler dealers. Battery! Battery out. Good idea. We'll restore these
01:53national treasures. Making some yen and euros in the process. We'll have it. This is exactly
02:01while we come half way round the world. This is epic! Look at the view up there, look. Look
02:13at the mountains in the background. Doesn't quite look real, does it? It's not like sitting
02:17on the M25 going to a workshop, is it? Oh mate, I'm so, so excited for this. On our way
02:25to go
02:25and see a Lancia Delta Integrale 16 valve. Come on. In Italy. In Italy. It's just such an epic car,
02:33isn't it? So iconic. And to do it here in Italy and come and find one. I cannot wait.
02:41I've been in love with the Lancia Delta Integrale ever since I watched it conquer the world's rally
02:46stages on TV. Me too. It may have been based on the humble Delta hatchback, but the Integrale was a
02:53thoroughbred performance car designed for one thing and one thing only. On tarmac, gravel or snow,
03:00from the late 80s to the early 90s, no other rally car could come close. In fact, with its turbocharged
03:07two-litre engine and sophisticated four-wheel drive system, the Delta Integrale won six
03:12World Rally Championships in a row. It also gave Italy their first, and so far only, World Rally
03:20Champion, Miki Biassion. I have a fantastic season. I won in the snow of Monte Carlo. To
03:27want here in the desert, it's fantastic. Who we've also got some history with.
03:36Miki Biassion, the first owner of the Ferrari 348 that we previously did in Italy, he won two
03:42World Rally Championships in an Integrale. Yeah, it's amazing. It's such a cool car. I mean, iconic,
03:48I would say. So I've run away to go and see this chap called Claudio. He's going to be selling
03:52us the
03:53car. Did you hear what you just said there? He's going to be selling us the car. Already in my
03:57head,
03:57it's ours. Yes. You know what we have to be a bit careful of here? Yeah. Because it's very easy
04:04to get
04:04carried away. But these things are rally cars. They're race cars for the road. Yeah. Which
04:09means they've been ragged. So we've got to keep an eye on whether the engine's in good condition.
04:13Has it been crashed? Yeah. They also rust, right? So we've got some things to just have a sense
04:19check when we get there. Okay. But you know we're going to buy it anyway.
04:26Also gives me a little bit of a chance to practice my Italian. Yeah, because ever since
04:30we've been together actually, you've been learning Italian. And you're probably up to what, six,
04:34eight words by now? Yeah, but they're really important ones. How to order a coffee, a beer,
04:38and some pasta. We've arranged to meet Claudio near the picturesque village of Fagagna in Italy's
04:45Far North East. It's like a dream, isn't it? Ciao! It must be Claudio. Nice to meet you.
04:53Claudio, nice to meet you. I'm Mike. Ciao, Elvis. Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you. Thank you for
04:58taking the time out to come and show us the car. Yeah. It looks great. This car is very nice.
05:03Very
05:03nice. You have a little problem for the turbo? Ah. Okay. A little problem. It's only ever a little problem.
05:09So, a little problem with the turbo is leaking, maybe? Yeah, yeah. Okay. But it runs, it drives? Yes,
05:16yes, you drive. Okay. No problem. We're trying to, well I am, trying to contain my excitement
05:21about standing here. Can we have a really good look round it? Okay. No problem. Do you have the keys?
05:25Yes. Perfect. Thank you very much. I'm just don't know where to start. Paintwork looks
05:30alright. Paintwork looks amazing. I can tell here this is all factory. How are we looking, Elvis?
05:34There's nothing obvious in here, mate. It's all, like, it's original paint colour everywhere.
05:38There's no creases. The lines are all in the right shapes. Even the lenses are good, aren't
05:43they? Yeah. The body works in great nick. No signs of rust or crash damage. Ah, mate, look
05:49at that. It's good, isn't it? Eh? Seats are great. No wear and tear on those. Headlining's immaculate.
05:56Yeah. Dashboard's got no cracks in it, which is really good. Go on then, fire it up.
06:00When it comes to that. Right.
06:04Ooh. Come on!
06:12Oh, he fired at last.
06:16Oh, that sounds really good. It does sound good, yeah. It did take a while to start.
06:20Maybe plugs or something like that. I mean, it's dirty underneath here. It could do with a
06:25little bit of tidying up. Well, I mean, once again, the wings look straight. There's no
06:30kind of welding. The original seals are in place around the turret tops. I want to get
06:35it out there, Elvis. Let's go.
06:43This is a pinch me moment. I just can't tell you how excited I am. Oh, and it's a gravel
06:51track. Hey, look, we're on a rally stage. We're on a rally stage. Whoa! This is where the Integrale's
06:57world-beating four-wheel drive system should come into its own.
07:03I'm sure I just got wheel spin there from the front axle.
07:07Oh, yeah. I shouldn't be getting it. Something like 53 or 54% of the torque should go to the
07:13rear end, so you should never really get front wheel spin. No. What's the steering like?
07:16I'm just going to spin it around here. We'll give that a test. It is going back. But the older
07:23way, that's weird. Yeah, your caster angle should sort of bring the wheels back to the central
07:29position. It doesn't quite feel right. OK, so there are a few mechanical gremlins, but it would
07:35take more than that to put me off this car. Er, you might want to look behind you. Have you
07:41seen the
07:42smoke coming out of the back of this car, mate? Oh, it's coming in the car. Look, it's actually in
07:46the
07:46car as well. That is embarrassing. Oh, my God, there's loads of it. Well, that could be the
07:52issues on about with the turbo. Yes, I mean, we look like we're just about to kill the countryside
07:56rather than drive through it. There was a little stutter every now and again when I hit the pedal,
08:01and it actually sounded like there might be a miss. If this one isn't pulling correctly,
08:08it's biased towards the front, and there's a problem with that, and the turbo is clearly smoking
08:14and terrible, then this could be a problematic car. It's just not quite there. And the problem
08:21is, it might be just not quite there, or it could be way off and we find loads of problems.
08:26Good Integrale start at around €40,000. So, at €42,000, this car feels like a risk.
08:34My head agrees with you, but oh, my heart. Hello. Claudio. Er, well, the outside of the car,
08:42it's beautiful. The interior is lovely. Just mechanically, it's really let itself down.
08:47Yeah, I mean, look, I'm pretty sure it's got a misfire from the engine. You know about the turbo.
08:52The smoke coming out the back is horrendous. And the problem is, I don't know exactly how bad that is.
08:57So, we have to protect ourselves against that risk. It could be serious.
09:01It comes down to price. It was €42,000. We think, really, €35,000.
09:10Yeah, €35,000. Lowest price, OK, is €38,000.
09:17€38,000. Well, I mean, I still think it's quite a risk, but I do love it.
09:24Exactly. I don't think we can walk away from it. No, no.
09:27€38,000, yeah, you've got a deal. Thank you. Absolutely.
09:30We've got a 16-valve integral. Look at that. Yes.
09:32And a whole host of work in front of us.
09:38I've never been more excited and more worried all at the same time than ever before when buying a car,
09:45because this one could potentially bite us.
09:48Have we ever looked at a car before with so many problems and yet still just desperately wanted to own
09:53it?
09:53Just wanted to buy it. Target for this car's got to be around mid-40s, 45, 46, something like that.
09:59So, you're going to have your work cut out for you, aren't you, in the workshop?
10:02I mean, let's just say there's enough wiggle room.
10:05We're going to need all the help we can get.
10:06Luckily, I have the number of the Integrale's most famous driver.
10:11I put a call in to Miki Biassi on, and he will, I know, help us out and hog us
10:15up.
10:16Miki still lives and breathes Lancia Deltas, and he's hooked us up with a family-run workshop he knows in
10:22the town of Kudroipo.
10:23Miki! Hello, my brother!
10:25How are you?
10:28Italian motorsport is run by brothers Stefano and Ivan, with help from Ivan's daughter Matilda and son Gabrielli.
10:36Thank you for introducing us, Miki. Is this what they specialise in?
10:39Yeah.
10:40Noi facciamo principalmente Lancia Delta, restauri e manutenzione in generale.
10:46Well, look, this is our Lancia Delta, and although it looks good, it has some problems.
10:52They are not problems, they are a characteristic of this car.
10:54I love it, I love it.
10:56Miki, that is exactly what we want to hear.
10:59So, guys, if it's okay with you, we need to get this car in your garage.
11:04Entriamo.
11:09Ivan and Stefano have been obsessed with Deltas since they were teenagers,
11:13and their knowledge and skills are now highly sought after.
11:17There is a long list of things to do.
11:19Where do you think we should start? Turbo, Misfire, four-wheel-drive system.
11:25What do you think we should do first?
11:27Here, to reach the turbo in the Lancia Delta, we need to install many pieces,
11:32because it's not really easy to reach.
11:34He says it's very difficult to get to the turbo.
11:37Well, look, that's fine. Maybe we tackle that one first.
11:44So, you have your personal cars worked on here.
11:47Yeah, I used to repair and to rebuild all my cars, my rally cars.
11:53You can see the level of work that the Paroussini brothers are doing.
11:57That's what I love. I mean, it just looks like a race team, doesn't it?
11:59It does.
12:00Everything's laid out perfectly on benches.
12:02Mate, you love all this, don't you? I do love it, yeah.
12:04You love all this. It's exactly how I like to work.
12:05It's what he lives for.
12:06Well, listen, thank you again, Miki, for introducing us to this team.
12:09I know you're a busy man.
12:10It's a pleasure for me that you are here.
12:13Welcome and hope to have more opportunity to stay with you.
12:16Yeah, of course, of course.
12:17We'll see you very soon, I'm sure.
12:18Yeah, see you soon, Miki. See you in a couple of days.
12:20Thank you.
12:21Time to get the car up in the air and have a look underneath.
12:24Right, so what do we actually have here, then?
12:27Let's have a look.
12:28Oh, rear box is gone.
12:30Scarico.
12:31Scarico.
12:32Scarico.
12:32Oh, and that means exhaust, does it?
12:34Well, it's kaput.
12:36Kaput.
12:37Which I think is the same in any language.
12:41The exhaust could be another costly problem.
12:43Could be the issue.
12:44And we haven't even got to the smoking engine yet.
12:47Where's the turbo, then?
12:48It's up here.
12:50Oh, right, so the turbo, you said, is difficult to get to?
12:54It's a bit difficult.
12:56Very.
12:58If we can drop the engine out, it means we can access it,
13:01we can check things like the clutch, we can get to that turbo easily.
13:04Also, we can really clean the engine bay.
13:05I just hope your Italian is up to this.
13:09OK.
13:10OK.
13:25Here we go.
13:26Ah, this is nice.
13:27Very authentic little cafe bar.
13:29This is lovely.
13:31You're Italian speaking, right?
13:33You got this.
13:33So I'm going to go for a triple caramel coffee drip with a double whip, please.
13:40Do espresso, por favor.
13:43Fluent Italian, apparently.
13:48Cheers, bud.
13:48Cheers.
13:50Oh, that is delicious.
13:51They do good coffee well here, don't they?
13:52So delicious.
13:53Yeah.
13:54This is sort of preparing me for quite a big day in the workshop,
13:58because we're going to find out today exactly what we thought,
14:01how good this engine is.
14:02Let's hope it doesn't cost us too much money.
14:06Ragazzi, with the beating heart of our integrale removed,
14:10we need to find out why it wasn't running properly on our test drive.
14:14The smoking turbo is our biggest concern,
14:16so I'm taking it off for specialist attention.
14:20While I try to rule out any problems with the engine itself,
14:23Ivan, oilio.
14:26Um, dove...
14:28Hang on.
14:29Cabo de la candela.
14:30Cabo...
14:30Cabo de la candela.
14:31Cabo de la candela.
14:33Si.
14:33Si, dove?
14:34There's some oil in the spark plug hole.
14:36I wonder if that's a sign of a gasket leaking.
14:41Ah, yeah.
14:43So, oilio, oilio.
14:45Si.
14:46OK.
14:47That's not a great sign.
14:49It probably means it's coming from the gasket underneath
14:53the cam cover and finding its way inside.
14:57Yeah, that definitely needs some attention.
15:01To rule out any bigger issues, I want to dig a bit deeper.
15:05We can get the, what's called a bore scoping kit,
15:08effectively a camera that allows me to look down inside the bore
15:11so we can see exactly what's going on inside the engine.
15:14I'm hoping that when I look down inside the engine itself,
15:17we don't find anything scary.
15:19Proxima.
15:20Yeah.
15:21Before inserting the camera, we need to get each piston into the right position.
15:25Here we go.
15:26Look at that.
15:26So that's the top of the piston.
15:28Little bits of carbon deposits, but nothing to worry about.
15:32All very normal.
15:33And I should be able to turn that round and hopefully see the valves.
15:41That's all OK.
15:43One down.
15:44Three more to go.
15:49I'm going to go and visit a firm called AR Precision Turbo
15:52and they're the specialists in actually refurbishing turbos
15:56or they might tell me we've just got to throw it away and buy a new one.
16:00Let's open up.
16:03Wow.
16:05Oh, yes.
16:06That is what I call a turbo workshop.
16:08That looks incredible.
16:09Alberto.
16:10Alberto.
16:11Alberto, we spoke on the phone.
16:14So this is my turbo.
16:17Integrale, Delta.
16:1816 valve.
16:19At the moment, a poof, poof, smoke.
16:23Fuma.
16:23Fuma.
16:24The smoke from our turbo could be a sign of complete failure.
16:28Massimo, Mike, nice to meet you.
16:30We won't know until engineer Massimo gets it apart.
16:34Speed of a Ferrari mechanic.
16:37Yes.
16:38Before we got here, I actually spent a bit of time just loosening these bolts up
16:41to make it easier for Massimo.
16:43A turbo works by harnessing exhaust gases via an impeller.
16:48This turns a compressor which forces air back into the engine
16:52to boost combustion.
16:54And there is the impeller.
16:58The impeller sits inside the turbo housing, and when we take it apart, you can see here,
17:05oil that's on the inside.
17:07In fact, it means that impeller is worn out, and it's not sealing correctly.
17:12A replacement turbo could cost a hefty 2,000 euros.
17:16That's what it should look like.
17:17It's a long way from being that, isn't it?
17:19Fortunately, Massimo reckons ours could be repaired for just 500.
17:24Let's go.
17:27That is the top of the piston that's moving up and down inside the engine, of course, incredibly quickly.
17:33Using a boroscope, I've now inspected all four cylinders.
17:37It looks fine.
17:38There are no signs of damage.
17:40It's an encouraging start, but the engine health check isn't finished yet.
17:44The next test I want to do is a leak-down test.
17:47Effectively, what I'm doing is putting a hose inside the spark plug hole.
17:51I'm going to connect an airline to that with a gauge so I know what pressure's going in,
17:55and with all the valves closed, it should hold that pressure.
17:59What we're looking for is any leaks past valves, which would be bad.
18:03Have you got an airline?
18:05Turbo Aria.
18:06Turbo Aria?
18:07Si.
18:11I'm just going to wind the pressure up, get it into the green zone.
18:16It's holding its pressure.
18:18I think we can say that one's good.
18:21Fortunately, it's the same story with all four cylinders.
18:25There's no obvious signs of discolouring on the cams.
18:29Quite often, if they've sort of overheated in places, you'll get a blueing of the metal where it's overheated.
18:35With the engine components in good shape, I'm turning my attention to the source of the oil leak.
18:40You can see here that the gasket around the outside is damaged.
18:45Oh, look. And also, let me get that off.
18:49There we go, look.
18:50This is the little seal that sits around the spark plug hole, and that also has some signs of damage,
18:55which would allow the oil to get from inside this cam cover into the spark plug hole.
19:00These leaks would likely explain the misfire I felt on the test drive.
19:03The good news is they're cheap and easy to replace.
19:10I love these machines.
19:12Things are looking up here as well.
19:14Massimo has made light work of changing the seals and bearings in our turbo,
19:18and it's now ready for testing.
19:24Spinning the turbo up to speed on this special rig will tell Massimo if all the new parts are properly
19:29balanced.
19:31Perfect. No way.
19:33One little bit of grinding, spins it up again. Perfect.
19:36Now we can just put it all back in the housing.
19:38Hopefully it's going to be good.
19:42So, Stefano, how does this come off? How do we...?
19:46That's what I was trying to think of.
19:47Come se toglie?
19:48We have to remove these two screws.
19:50We remove the support.
19:51Yes.
19:52We remove the six screws in the wheel.
19:55Yes.
19:55And then we move.
19:56With this as well.
19:57We move the semi-assies and inside it.
19:59The four-wheel drive system on this car is actually very clever, but also quite simple.
20:04This effectively is the front axle with a regular diff in the middle of it,
20:07but it's got this clever viscous coupling sitting right here.
20:11When I drove the car and I lost grip on that gravel road, it felt to me like this wasn't
20:15working.
20:16I want to get it off, take it apart, and just have a closer inspection.
20:19OK, let's go.
20:23The viscous coupling was key to the Integrale's rally success, ensuring that all four wheels have maximum traction.
20:31But in our car, I was getting wheel spin from the front.
20:34Look, you can't see the viscous joint.
20:38Here, a screwdriver.
20:41What I'm going to do is take it apart and just try and understand exactly what's going on on the
20:45inside.
20:46New viscous couplings don't come cheap, so hopefully, if this one's faulty,
20:50I can fix it.
20:54Hold on a minute.
20:56Put those on.
21:00So you can't service it?
21:03We have to put another one.
21:05That's bad news.
21:06It's not good.
21:08No.
21:08No, no, no.
21:09No, no, no.
21:10A new coupling might be our only option, but before I take that hit,
21:16I need to be certain it's the cause of the problem.
21:19Oh, look, the O-ring is broken, yeah.
21:22Colore normale?
21:23Colore normale, perché quando si scalda, si consumano un po' le frizioni, il fluido diventa più scuro.
21:29Designed to minimise wheel spin, a viscous coupling relies on a series of alternating metal plates immersed in a special
21:36silicon fluid.
21:37So effectively, you can think of one set of plates working off the front axle, one working off the rear.
21:42When you lose traction, one axle spins at a vastly different rate to the other, and when they spin at
21:48different speeds, the fluid has this effect of thickening and creating drag.
21:51I can even feel this now just in my hands.
21:53You slide them together, it gets thicker, it becomes harder to spin them, which means we transfer the torque between
21:59front and rear axles.
22:00This system relies on a very specific type of silicon fluid and a very specific quantity of it to allow
22:07it all to work in the way that it should.
22:09So I think what's happened is, the O-ring is broken, that's what seals the fluid inside.
22:14That means that it's probably contaminated, but also we haven't got enough fluid in it.
22:19We've found the problem, but Mike's heart might skip another beat when I tell him what it costs.
22:26This is Lozano del Grappa, it is literally the home of Grappa.
22:35Thank you for the programme.
22:37Thank you for the programme.
22:38Thank you for the programme.
22:39Of course you can, yeah.
22:40It's a pleasure.
22:42Can you please?
22:49Right here we go.
22:51Let's try this place.
22:54What do you know?
22:58I'm going to get you a classic wrapper to start.
23:01Grazie.
23:02Grazie.
23:02Here you go.
23:04Here you go.
23:05Oh, it's a shot glass.
23:07Yeah.
23:07Cheers.
23:07Cheers.
23:08Looks like water.
23:09Cheers.
23:13Oh, yes, that's nice.
23:15It's got a lovely fuzzy...
23:17I forgot to tell you, it's about 40%.
23:22Wow, that's delicious.
23:24There is something I need to tell you, so just, I'll tell you after.
23:30Done.
23:31Yeah.
23:32Right, you know the old viscous coupling?
23:34Yep.
23:35500 euros.
23:37Sorry?
23:38And we haven't paid for the exhaust yet.
23:39How much is that going to cost?
23:41Two more please, thank you very much.
23:57What is there not to like about Italy?
24:06Yesterday, I was going, fuma, fuma, and I don't know if I was saying fart, fart, or whether I was
24:12saying smoke coming out of the exhaust, but I got it right.
24:14Someone told us the word for fart last night, and somehow the Italians make that word sound beautiful.
24:20Yes, it sounded lovely.
24:23Sciginari or something it was, you know, for fart.
24:26It's not an onomatopoeia, is it?
24:28Fart is fart.
24:30Well, just as long as there's no Scorigios let loose on the way to the workshop, we'll be just fine.
24:38My mission today is to get us a new exhaust.
24:41While I've got my hands full at the workshop, with the newly refurbished turbo back on, the freshly cleaned engine
24:48is almost ready to go back in.
24:51Next on the agenda is the car's iffy-feeling steering. Ivan's offered to investigate and I'm praying for good news.
24:57Elvis.
24:59Can I show you something?
25:01What's up?
25:05This is wrong, it's not correct.
25:14No.
25:14What's the problem?
25:16L'incidenza.
25:18Caster.
25:18Oh, yeah.
25:20This is the original of the Integrale.
25:22Oh, I see.
25:24It's offset.
25:25Yeah.
25:26Do you know what?
25:27That makes sense.
25:28This is the correct top mount and you see the position of the hole relative to the mounting points is
25:34offset.
25:34It's not central.
25:35And that will change the caster angle of the car, which affects the way the steering feels.
25:40I think we've found the problem.
25:42Caster is the angle the front wheels pivot around as you steer.
25:46If the angle's wrong, the steering can pull to one side or struggle to come back to centre.
25:51Can you change?
25:53Si.
25:54Can you do this?
25:55Perfect.
25:56Thank you, my friend.
25:56There you go.
26:00Ivan has the correct top mounts in stock, so that's another bullet dodged and means the engine and suspension are
26:05ready to go back in the car.
26:13Look at the size of this facility.
26:21These people have been running for decades and they are legends of making sports exhausts for all kinds of cars.
26:27And I've been dying to come here for a long time.
26:30Hi, Mike.
26:31Barlow.
26:32How are you?
26:32Fine, thank you.
26:33Good to see you.
26:34Good to see you.
26:35We spoke about our car.
26:37The exhaust system is kaput.
26:39It's no good on the car, so I was kind of hoping.
26:41Can we build one?
26:43Yes, certainly.
26:43A good quality exhaust makes a huge difference to performance and a team here at Ragazon are amongst the best
26:51in the business.
26:52Is this the raw material?
26:53This is the first material, all steel and inox IC 304.
26:57Ah, yes, yes, yes.
26:58Laser cutting machine.
27:00machine.
27:01The machine is absolutely precise.
27:02And here we will cut the wall for your internal lantern.
27:06Wow.
27:08Wow.
27:09That is incredible.
27:11You'll see a piece of sheet steel.
27:13It's like the stuff outside of the picture, the laser.
27:15Just cutting perfect shapes out of it.
27:18It's very precise.
27:20More or less than 4 tenths.
27:23And we are cutting 8 mm in steel.
27:27Really?
27:28Wow, look at that.
27:31That is incredible.
27:34Paolo and his team have developed their own design for the integrale exhaust.
27:41Three bends for our integrale.
27:44Okay.
27:46Keeping bends to a minimum helps maximise performance.
27:50The less bends, the more airflow you get.
27:53And that's what gives you the extra horsepower.
27:56But the really clever bit is how they make the silencers.
28:01This is a machine that we have produced internally.
28:04A machine brevettata.
28:05Using a process called hydroforming, this machine can be used to increase the diameter of the tubes.
28:12This?
28:13This?
28:14This?
28:15This?
28:16What, in here?
28:17No.
28:18This is Harry Potter magic.
28:21Harry Potter.
28:21So you're going to put this tube in this machine and it's going to come out like this.
28:26I want to see it.
28:28Paolo's team are fiercely protective of their technology.
28:31That's it.
28:33We put the cover down so we can't see the magic happen.
28:35So much for getting the money shot.
28:37I wonder if there's a man behind swapping it over.
28:40Water is injected into the tube at 1200 bar, around three times the pressure at the bottom of the ocean.
28:47And just a few minutes later...
28:49No way!
28:51That's...
28:51It's fantastic.
28:53It's a magia.
28:54It's a magia.
28:54That is...
28:56That's magic.
28:57That is unbelievable.
28:58And it's so precise, isn't it?
29:00That is fantastic.
29:02What a job.
29:03Another part of our exhaust system.
29:06The finished exhaust comes in at a hefty 1600 euros.
29:10But it should give our car a bit of that rally magic it was lacking.
29:14Right.
29:15Let's get that bit.
29:16If you wouldn't mind, that'd be great.
29:19Arrivederci.
29:23Let's just hope Elvis is impressed.
29:26Sorry, Mike.
29:27I'm a little busy right now.
29:29Prosciutto.
29:30Prosciutto.
29:32Not parma ham?
29:33No.
29:34No, no parma.
29:35No.
29:36Can we try?
29:37Of course.
29:38OK.
29:43Oh, it's good.
29:46It's lovely.
29:47It's really good.
29:48All right, mate.
29:49Yeah, it's all good.
29:50Look at this.
29:51Some special ham from this region?
29:54Yeah.
29:54Yes.
29:54I'm telling you, I know that the correct way to eat this ham, because I keep getting told,
29:59is...
30:00That is how you eat everything.
30:02It's not just ham.
30:04Mmm.
30:05Good, isn't it?
30:06It's really intense ham, isn't it?
30:09Mmm.
30:09Delicious.
30:19It's an absolute thing of beauty, this.
30:21And for the money, so it should be.
30:24Each section needs to be tightly bolted in place to ensure there are no leaks.
30:28There's a little gap here that...
30:31But getting it into the right position is a fiddly process.
30:35At the moment it's just sitting a little bit low on this side, which means a little bit
30:40of just tweaking all of the other pieces.
30:44And when I say tweaking, I mean smashing with a hammer.
30:48But just to get everything orientated in exactly the right way, so that this sits level with
30:52that one.
30:55This is the moment, we're just trying to hold it in position as they tighten up these final three bolts.
31:02There we go, that is perfect and looks just beautiful.
31:07Can't wait to hear what it sounds like.
31:08It means we're now getting the exhaust gases out of the engine in a much more efficient, high-performance manner.
31:14We've now fixed most of our Integrali's major problems, but because we've had to spend big,
31:19we'll need to pitch our car at the top end of the market.
31:22And to do that, we'll need to make sure it appeals to serious collectors.
31:26I'm obsessed with these cars and I absolutely love them.
31:29Seeing one is very special, but being surrounded by them is going to be mind-boggling.
31:34It's just the last couple of finishing touches that we need really, because we are almost there.
31:39Most of the heavy lifting has been done on this car.
31:41We've just got to now think about the last couple of things that really make it stand out and look
31:46the part.
31:54What a collection, eh?
31:55I just feel like I've been dropped into some kind of heaven.
32:00Mickey has invited us to an Integrali meet in his hometown, a Bassano del Grappa.
32:06And it's the perfect chance to size up the competition.
32:10White wheels, see, white wheels against a red car.
32:13In fact, look how good it looks on white wheels.
32:15It does look good on red and white.
32:17Look, who signed this one?
32:20He's everywhere, isn't he?
32:21You know what, that boy goes around graffiti and everything, doesn't he?
32:23Yeah.
32:23Is this your car, sir?
32:25Sure.
32:25It's yours?
32:25Fantastic.
32:26It's 16-valve.
32:27See?
32:28We have the same.
32:29We also have one.
32:30It's a...
32:32Bella...
32:33Bella?
32:34Yeah, it's good.
32:35Condition.
32:36How do I say condition?
32:37Conditioner.
32:37I haven't got that far.
32:38Right.
32:40There are dozens of Integralis here today, including some modified cars and rare special editions.
32:46Mickey!
32:48Hey!
32:48Hi, boys.
32:49This is your car, isn't it, Mickey?
32:52This is a replica of the car that I won the Rally San Remo.
32:58There's so many varieties.
33:00That's what I quite like about this.
33:01People have done different things.
33:03They came in special editions out of the factory.
33:05Those wheels do look good.
33:07Maybe it's a question for you, Mickey.
33:08You know our car?
33:10Do you think we should go for white wheels?
33:13Well, red car with white rims is perfect.
33:17The car I won the WRC in 89 and it was red car with white rims.
33:24The Rally look is one thing, but I'm keen to know if we should be giving it some extra Rally
33:28performance.
33:29In many of this car, the map has been changed.
33:33Right, yeah, good.
33:34So modifying is okay?
33:35It's okay.
33:36Yeah, yeah, it's okay because the engine was so strong in competition with more than 300 horsepower.
33:42Yeah.
33:42That with a computer you can work half an hour and you get more 40, 60 horsepower.
33:50Yeah.
33:51A performance boost and some new wheels will make our car even more desirable.
33:56But they'll also push up the cost of the build and that means we'll need to ask top money.
34:02So we have a car.
34:04It's a 16-valve.
34:05Yeah.
34:061991.
34:08It's red.
34:08It's going to be finished to a very high standard.
34:11We were thinking of putting our car into the marketplace at around 50,000 euros.
34:16Does that sound about right?
34:17Depends on the standard.
34:18Are you interested?
34:19So you're buying it?
34:22You want me to sign this?
34:25Oh, it's for us?
34:26Thank you.
34:28So it's the local club?
34:30Thank you very much.
34:30It's this club?
34:31The club.
34:32The Bassano.
34:33It's the fans of Mickey Piazza.
34:36He's everywhere.
34:36Thank you very much.
34:37Grazie.
34:38Grazie.
34:39Mate, I'll tell you, this is all very nice but pressure's on now.
34:42We've got to get our car to a very high standard if we're going to achieve that price.
34:47And we kind of need to to make some sort of profit out of it, don't we?
34:50Yeah.
34:50Better get cracking, don't we?
34:54With Mickey's blessing at the workshop, I'm looking at ways to give our Italian stallion a few extra horses.
35:00This is the original air filter.
35:02We're going to get rid of that and replace it with this, which is a high flow performance air filter.
35:06It goes in exactly the same place, filters the air in the same way, but allows a higher flow rate
35:11of air to come into the engine to now match our performance exhaust on the other end.
35:17But it's the next upgrade that will make the biggest difference.
35:23Ah, here we go.
35:23Un regalo per te.
35:25Perfecto.
35:25So, what we're doing here is upgrading the ECU, the car's brains, if you like, with a brand new circuit
35:32board.
35:33It's faster, it's more modern, it's programmable, which gives us a lot more control in how we tie in all
35:38of the new components on the car to maximise its performance.
35:40The ECU controls the precise amount of air and fuel going into the engine at any given point in the
35:46rev range.
35:49Once this new one's installed, we'll be able to plug in a laptop and make adjustments to increase both power
35:54and torque.
35:56Stefano, with all of these new things, how much horsepower do we think?
36:01Quanti cavalli alla macchina?
36:03E con questa arrivi circa 280 cavalli in sicurezza, poi dipende sempre dalla pressione del turbo che deve usare.
36:09Wow, that's decent, okay.
36:11Originale, er, duecento?
36:14Cento novanta-sei di preciso.
36:16Okay, so 196 or 200 horsepower originally jumping up to something like 280 with everything we've done to the car.
36:24That is quite the performance uplift.
36:29Hey up, fella.
36:30Ah.
36:30That is not the same car, surely. That looks incredible.
36:34Doesn't it look good?
36:35That looks fantastic. Oh, well done, boys.
36:37And these?
36:38Yeah, these are great, aren't they? So I'll party exchange the old ones, had to pay a little bit of
36:41money, new boots on them but a good set of wheels.
36:44I think that's what it should be sat on.
36:45Yes.
36:45Boys, I can't see it just how pleased I am, so bravo, bravo.
36:50It's time to add the finishing touches with our restored cam cover placed on top of the fully functioning 16
36:56-valve engine.
36:57and a rally inspired steering wheel along with the beautiful white wheels.
37:04Hey up, Mickey. Hey, what do you think?
37:06Yeah, I think that you have done a great job.
37:09It's a shame that you didn't work for the factory team in the past.
37:12That would have been nice.
37:14I got an idea.
37:15Yes.
37:15This is a rally car and the best way to test the car after all this wonderful job.
37:22Yes.
37:22Is to go in a proper rally stage.
37:25No way.
37:26No way.
37:26And then I'm sure you will enjoy your time driving.
37:29I'm sure will enjoy it.
37:30This is perfect.
37:31You've made him very, very happy until I tell him that it's my turn to drive.
37:36Wear the seatbelt, please.
37:51Wee-hey!
37:54Blimein' hell, this car's got some right old tug, innit?
37:59It's raw, it's raucous, it sounds powerful.
38:02You can feel it as well.
38:04You can just fit in the seat of your pants, you can feel it, don't you?
38:07Every inch.
38:08Sounds so good.
38:15Haven't we come a long way?
38:18You know, when we first come and see this car, I'll be honest with you,
38:21sort of every rule that I've got for myself, I broke.
38:25Yeah.
38:25Because the car, while it was smoking, you were worried about the viscous coupling,
38:29weren't working, the steering was a bit wayward.
38:31There were a lot of issues with this car.
38:33What did we do?
38:34Yeah, we bought it anyway.
38:36We bought it anyway.
38:38We threw caution to the wind when buying our dream car for 38,000 euros.
38:43And it was a long way from where we knew it should be.
38:46The car came with some worrying issues.
38:49But with a refurbished turbo, new viscous coupling and performance upgrades,
38:54along with a bespoke exhaust system and white wheels.
38:58For a little over 5,000 euros, we've made our car fit for the Integrale badge once again.
39:07So have you enjoyed this?
39:09My goodness, mate.
39:10Honestly, I've loved every single second of it.
39:13And that's building this car and it's driving on roads like this.
39:16But, of course, we are still on the way to this little stride that Mickey set up for us.
39:21And I think, talking of enjoyment, that is going to be through the roof.
39:24I can't believe it.
39:26Mickey Biassian, the two-time World Rally Champion, has managed to get us on the stage of a proper rally
39:33in our own ready-built car.
39:37Italy is a legendary rally in heritage.
39:43And today, the Rally 1000M has come to town.
39:48What an amazing place to test this car, eh?
39:51Before the race begins...
39:52Right, you ready?
39:53We've been given special access to the course to test our Integrale's rally-bred performance.
40:06Yes, mate.
40:08We're off.
40:08That's off the line, isn't it?
40:09We're off.
40:11Oh, how good this is, Bill.
40:14This car's got some welly, innit?
40:17It really has got some grunt.
40:19I mean, this is absolutely fantastic.
40:23Oh, I feel like Mickey Biassian.
40:25I really do.
40:26This is incredible, Elvis.
40:28I mean, this is what this car was designed to do.
40:30I mean, literally, that's what it was designed to do.
40:32I could really feel the power, you know, in the turbo and that viscous coupling.
40:38You can feel the car just sticking its bum down on the ground, finding some grip and going for it.
40:50No wonder they dominated for six years.
40:53Honestly, you've nailed it.
40:54You've absolutely nailed it.
40:56Well, we did, mate.
40:57We did.
40:58Together with the guys, you know, Stefano, Ivan, Gabriele, Matilda, they've been amazing.
41:10The car is so good, it's already attracted interest from a potential buyer.
41:16Mate, do we really have to sell it?
41:18So ridiculously good.
41:20I mean, I'm pleased it still looks that good after you were tearing around that rally stage in it.
41:24Aha, Matilda.
41:26Integrale enthusiast Moreno is a contact with Stefano and Ivan, and Matilda has come along to help translate.
41:33So, Moreno, this is our Lancia, yes? You like it?
41:36Yes.
41:40Why do you want an Integrale?
41:43Because it's the car of my dreams.
41:45It's a car of his dreams.
41:46I know how he feels.
41:47Yes, but we have to let this one go.
41:50It's an amazing looking car, but it also performs, it drives very, very well.
41:55It's very fast, it just, everything works beautifully on it.
41:59It's very beautiful, but also very performant, very fast.
42:03So, yes.
42:04Good.
42:04Do you want to take a look?
42:05Yes, yes, yes, yes.
42:06Take a look.
42:18Still smiling?
42:19It's very beautiful.
42:21It's a beautiful job.
42:28It's a beautiful job.
42:36It's a beautiful job, isn't it?
42:37Yes, yes, yes, yes.
42:38So, we are looking to sell it, and we are looking for 50,000 euros.
42:4650...
42:46Tanto.
42:4748.
42:4848.
42:50He says too much.
42:51Why does everyone say too much?
42:5548, he takes it now.
42:5749.
42:5849.
42:5949.
43:00He's quite determined, doesn't he?
43:0248, and he's going to take it now.
43:04Okay.
43:05Yeah, yeah.
43:05Buarantotto.
43:07Grazie.
43:07Grazie, grazie.
43:08Well done.
43:09Congratulations as well.
43:11Grazie.
43:11You've got a beautiful car.
43:12Well done.
43:13Thank you very much.
43:15And there you go.
43:18With the car off to a new home, and a hefty 5,000 euros profit in our pockets...
43:23Italy has very quickly become my favourite place to come and do deals now.
43:28Yeah.
43:28Our work here in Italy is done.
43:30And let the adventure continue.
43:32Onto the next one.
43:33Fantástico.
44:00Come on our way.
44:01Just one deep.
44:01What else can we do with you thought?
44:01How did you feel?
44:01It looks like you were sitting in the bedroom and talking stage.
44:01See you next week.
44:01How have you been doing?
44:02Well done.
