00:00and how about this our one producer managed to uh land our white whale captain ahab nice job as
00:07chris cotillo joins us here uh from mass live on the christian arcane show uh mr cotillo were you
00:12trolling us just now or what no i wasn't nothing was coming in i don't know what was going on
00:16interesting i'm here now are you driving through new hampshire maybe sometimes i have pockets up
00:21there where you can't get cell reception uh used to be you couldn't get any reception remember you
00:25drive to new hampshire and you just could not get cell phone reception remember that are you old
00:28enough for that like i remember those days where the thing just cut right out the verizon lte is a
00:34strong program you know very good all right uh let's talk about uh first of all before we talk
00:39about the press conference i want to talk about something that you heard craig breslow say to our
00:43guy jemai there on the 310 to left podcast about how a lot of questions could be answered if people
00:49just ask the right uh questions and that those questions never get answered what questions do
00:54you a person who asks him questions on a regular basis think that he's talking about don't get
00:58asked of him yeah i mean i'm not sure you know i think uh obviously there's a lot of questions
01:04asked over the course of an hour the other day um i think we basically touched on every topic i
01:09think
01:10you know the probably i think they're very uh sensitive to the narratives we've seen that and
01:15they've definitely noticed some of those things and they've definitely you know paid some attention so
01:20um that is i think pretty evident and has been um but i don't know exactly what he was talking
01:27about and
01:27um that's probably a question to pose to him on the fenway rundown the coming months looking forward
01:32to that and i will be certainly listening and uh very interested in what he has to say when you
01:36do
01:37get to the bottom of that because i'm curious about it too it seemed like most of the questions
01:40got asked some of them got answered pretty promptly like chad tracy jumping on the sword there for the
01:45uh quick hooks for the starting pitchers what was your take on that and do you believe tracy when he
01:50says that those decisions were his and his alone yeah i mean i think it's you know a few different
01:56uh things i think you know obviously tracy decided to you know i don't know if take one for the
02:02team
02:02is the right answer but be very clear that he wanted to own those decisions i think we're in
02:07organizations there is that pecking order where the manager is going to do that he's going to pay
02:11um kind of attention to the narratives coming out and be the one who says that you know and obviously
02:18um i think people would look at it as a bad look for the organization if they came and said
02:21it's just collaborative or we did you know pre-ordain some things or whatever it might be
02:26so i think that the truth is probably somewhere in the middle i think there are probably a lot of
02:31game planning in the weeks and you know almost a month leading up to that series for how they were
02:37going to attack guys they obviously liked eric miller a lot he had tracy's confidence at that
02:41point and he went to him but i think it was maybe a little much in terms of this is
02:46completely my call
02:47they had nothing to do with it um every front office is involved and i think you know i think
02:51it's reasonable to assume that you know someone like chad tracy is going to have less uh pushback
02:59ability than someone like alex gora who's been there done that um and has won a world series and
03:04and in game decisions played a big role in that so interesting i just don't think there should be this
03:09big stigma over the collaboration happens everywhere and it's just part of it yeah no i agree i think
03:14that's that's fair i mean collaboration is one thing but to see him have to go to eric miller
03:20that early two straight nights against the yank it's just the whole thing uh really left a lot of
03:24people scratching their heads now sort of with that in mind chad tracy maybe he's not prone to push back
03:30when he was the interim manager they took that interim tag off and they gave him an extension chris so
03:35like i just it seems to me like they weren't going to fire him in the offseason if he left
03:40sonny
03:40gray in for another inning and a third so when he says those were my decisions he's kind of right
03:44he's the only one who can actually go to the mound and take the pitcher out of the game whatever
03:48craig
03:49breslow says of him and not for nothing craig breslow's never won anything either you know except
03:52for when he was a player but like as an executive what's he what's he ever won yeah i mean
03:57i think
03:58that they are i think one person we're leaving out of this who is kind of a conduit or clearly
04:04in
04:05charge of the pitching staff is andrew bailey you know i think he at cora you know brought him in
04:09along with breslow to replace dave bush a couple years ago but i think with tracy coming up and and
04:16bailey having already been there and the continuity with him and the bullpen coach chris holt i think
04:21there was clear you know it was kind of clear that oh these guys are going to be you know
04:25the ones
04:26running the pitching department it's going to be kind of i don't want to say offensive coordinator
04:29and defensive coordinator but clearly bailey has a huge say and a lot of sway there too yeah
04:34that certainly seems like it we're talking with chris cotillo of mass live joining us here in the
04:38christian arcane show cotillo the offseason coming up obviously once the playoffs are all over red sox
04:44looking ahead to that fans looking ahead to that in the event that there is a lockout what does that
04:49do to the offseason in terms of availability of free agents likelihood of big trades does that
04:55well what's sort of the effect of that assuming that that's where we're going yeah i think that
04:59there's you know the real chance that a lot of guys want to sign early in november just so they
05:05secure a job i mean i think 2022 is pretty instructive on this if you ask a guy like trevor
05:11story who
05:12he got a good deal obviously here but he wanted to sign with the rangers and if he was more
05:17proactive
05:17to play for his hometown team he would have beaten you know cory seager or marcus semian to the punch
05:22and getting texas's money back then and so i think there's a lot of you know the union and agents
05:27are
05:27probably going to look back at that and say get your money in november we don't know what the rules
05:31of the road are going to become you know i don't know what it would be february march april or
05:35whatever and uh i think that that's pretty interesting i think as soon as it starts you
05:40know five days after the world series you'll see trade talks really heat up and it's going to be the
05:45closest thing we've seen in baseball in my lifetime probably to nfl nba nhl style free agency where
05:52things it's not going to be all in a day but things happen pretty quickly because come december
05:571st transactions are going to be frozen the winter meetings aren't going to happen all that type of
06:01stuff even if they don't lose games you know december will be uh not open for business i think
06:05that's pretty interesting so you know the red socks it's on them for the next month or so to get
06:09their ducks in a row and know what they're going to do yeah on the topic of those ducks it
06:14does
06:14seem like a power bat is what they need is what they've needed for however many years in a row
06:18now
06:19uh and this year clearly the offense was the big problem whenever they had problems this year was
06:24because the offense wasn't carrying their end there's no one really in the free agent market
06:28that fits that bill so in terms of trades did they kind of burn through their farm system with
06:34the rutchman trade or could they still maybe swing a move here to get that kind of bad in here
06:38in the
06:38offseason yeah i was talking to somebody the other day who said you know if you give up arias plus
06:43the group you gave up for you know uh godly rutchman and i would even throw you know we don't
06:49really know what curtis mead is yeah of course but throw early into that mix some combination of
06:54arias early ianson witherspoon um you know rivas some of these guys they gave up you probably could
07:02have a pretty compelling offer for somebody in the real deep end of the pool whether that be ellie de
07:07la
07:08cruz if he's available or in a true ultimate long shot somebody like bobby witt or just another
07:13superstar that shakes free uh instead you know you could probably look at you know what arias could
07:19get you with maybe another piece uh and then rutchman mead what you've gotten for most of that
07:24package so far so to me i think the best path forward what i would do and i've been saying
07:30this
07:30since they got knocked out is trade arias i every time we have this discussion about the next big
07:36thing the next big prospect well you know what do people think of mostly due to health issues
07:41roman anthony right now or marcelo meyer or christian campbell or kristen casas or bobby dahlbeck or
07:48michael chavis i mean the best position player the red sox have developed the last six seven years i'm
07:54not doing the hand thing i'm not a child um is will you're a brave who is like their 15th
07:59best prospect
08:00or you know rafael is obviously in the mix there too but it's not these guys that were blue chip
08:06top prospects and that goes to show you the the old adage they're suspects uh more than anything
08:12suspects more than prospects so i would try to trade arias for a big big fish if you can get
08:18ellie de la cruz that would be great um somebody like that to play shortstop and be kind of solidified
08:24you have to figure out the story part of it later that's where i'd start just go all in for
08:28like a
08:29true bona fide superstar they don't need like four or five different moves like they might have a year
08:36ago or two years ago you figure like maybe a back-end starter if gray walks in the bullpen you
08:41can always use more arms but they're pretty much set around the outfield they have too many guys
08:46already with the infield you have contraris and durbin and mead and so guard back at catcher like
08:51they don't have that many open positions shortstop is one where you can very clearly upgrade and i think
08:56they're going to try to do that um it's not the zach netto's of the world but i mean like
09:00real real
09:01superstars is where i would go um obviously easier said than done but i think you look at the free
09:06agents a rosarena and suzuki are kind of the interesting ones how they fit into that outfield
09:11and dh mix is the real problem there yeah no question about it do you think they'd be willing
09:15to trade arias is that is that something you get the sense they'd be open to doing and the right
09:18if
09:19the right deal came along i bet you and this is a total guess because obviously i haven't talked to
09:24them but i bet john henry would say like we've been hoarding prospects that haven't really done
09:28anything for us for years why not go get you know a certain thing and a real you know solidified
09:34talent
09:34i wouldn't be surprised at all yeah not to mention they paid a lot of these prospects you know before
09:38they actually did anything uh so there you go all right before we let you go here catillo you
09:42surprised to see the yankees crapping themselves here against the rays like they are i know that game
09:46just started but i mean they they looked pretty looked pretty solid against the red sox and now here they
09:50are really struggling in against the rays yeah i mean you see what the rays were able to do against
09:55slittler was just put the ball in play which is something the red sox could barely do and
09:58you know alex core always used to say you put the ball in play and good things happen uh the
10:03rays
10:03found that out with the yankee suspect defense no question about it all right chris catillo great
10:07stuff great to talk with you glad we finally found the uh right the combination of numbers to get you
10:12on
10:12the line and we'll talk to you again real soon all right great thanks christian all right thank you
10:16chris catillo my guy the one guy who would see me sitting all alone there in the cafeteria come
10:21over and sit with sit with me it was uh it was not like a she's all that thing either
10:26where they
10:26were just you know let's see if we can make the ugly chick go hot or whatever it wasn't one
10:30of those
10:30he was just being a nice guy chris catillo noted nice guy that's what everyone says uh 617-779-7937
10:37is
10:37the phone number he mentioned some names the red sox might be wanting to trade for trade arias for
