For over fifty years, biologists struggled with the protein folding problem. Understanding the complex three dimensional shape of a protein from its amino acid sequence was one of the hardest puzzles in modern science. Experimental methods like X ray crystallography took months or even years of painstaking lab work for a single structure.

In 2020, an artificial intelligence system called AlphaFold, developed by DeepMind, solved this grand challenge. AlphaFold demonstrated the ability to predict protein structures with atomic accuracy in just a few minutes. This breakthrough stunned the scientific community and fundamentally transformed biological research.

Today, the AlphaFold database contains predicted 3D structures for over two hundred million proteins, covering almost every cataloged organism known to science. This free global resource is currently accelerating discoveries in malaria research, antibiotic resistance, plastic eating enzymes, and cancer treatments.
