00:00We like to call this segment
00:01The Mixed Bag.
00:02Ho, ho.
00:05That's how they talked in Quebec City the other day,
00:07I think.
00:08No.
00:10Have you asked Meemaw if she's ever gone,
00:12Ho, ho?
00:14Fair enough.
00:15I'll stop.
00:18You never asked Meemaw.
00:21She doesn't sound like that.
00:22Yeah.
00:24She speaks French?
00:25She speaks French, but she doesn't sound French.
00:28Oh, my goodness.
00:31You speak English, but you don't sound English.
00:36I could, though, if I wanted to.
00:38No, you couldn't.
00:39I was more Australian, I fear.
00:41I'm going to sound like that if I wanted to.
00:44Chip, chip, cheerio.
00:49He literally...
00:52Oh, my goodness.
00:53Let me spoil the home.
01:00Hey, let's get to Leroy's former quarterback, Jim Harbaugh.
01:04Getting a little dusty with the media.
01:07Media's asking him.
01:08They're saying, hey, wasn't this supposed to be the year Justin Herbert
01:11wasn't getting his ass kicked all the time?
01:14And Jim Harbaugh didn't like the framing of the question.
01:23I don't know if it's the group in front of him, his protection, what's going on.
01:27But when you came here, your charge was to get him protected.
01:32Mike's charge was to make sure he didn't have to be a superhero.
01:35But, you know, 2.5 years later, like you said, he still has to be a superhero for you guys
01:40to have a chance to win the game.
01:43Why is that?
01:51Yeah, that just sounds more like an insult than it does a question.
01:54But, I mean, that's the way you look at it.
01:59But I'm saying that, yeah, it's the kind of competitor that he is where I've never seen him flinch.
02:08I've never seen him rattled.
02:13He's an amazing inspiration.
02:15And that's what we do.
02:18We all feed off of that.
02:19I know the entire team does.
02:21And you asked me what gives me optimism, what gives me hope with this football team,
02:29because I see that throughout the entire team.
02:31And, yeah, we attack.
02:35We improve.
02:37Can't improve everything all at once.
02:39But we can improve one thing at a time, all the time.
02:42And that's what this team is doing.
02:44It wasn't this hard.
02:45I'm just asking it.
02:47It's the third season now.
02:49He's still among the most pressured.
02:51He hit quarterbacks.
02:53I'm just asking you why.
02:54I think that's a good question.
02:56Can I answer it the same way?
02:57You can answer it the same way.
02:58I don't think you answered it.
03:00You can answer it.
03:00I think I did.
03:07So, part of the – I'm going to tell you part of the reason why there's difficulty here.
03:13Right?
03:16You're asking a guy, and here's what happens.
03:20You want him not to hold the ball as long.
03:23You want him to evaluate what's going on quicker.
03:27Right?
03:27But you're asking him to do that by throwing it in tight windows, and he's hesitant.
03:35And that's the problem.
03:37He has to get comfortable with throwing the ball open spaces because God knows Mike McDaniel's not changing his offense
03:46to accommodate the quarterback.
03:50Because his stroke of luck was that he came in with a quarterback that could make those throws.
03:59And he hasn't been with another one that could.
04:03And it's not – it's just – it is – from day one, I've said this.
04:10The hardest area for a quarterback to throw the ball is in the middle of the field because a lot
04:17of times you have to throw it into openings,
04:20knowing that your receiver is going to come through that opening when you throw it.
04:24Two, it did it very well.
04:26But every other quarterback sees that, and they pat the ball, pat the ball, pat the ball.
04:31And so what happens is when you don't anticipate throwing in those openings, you're looking, waiting for it to open.
04:38Guess what?
04:39A linebacker may drop in.
04:41A safety may come down.
04:42You get a lot of balls picked.
04:44You get a lot of balls batted.
04:45So from that standpoint, there's a transition that the quarterback has to do.
04:50And it's a bigger step for the quarterback to have to throw the ball the way you need him to
04:56throw to be successful
04:57than it is for the coach to design plays to get guys open.
05:01Best guess.
05:02Two things.
05:02One, do you think Mike McDaniel makes it to the end of the season?
05:06Yes, because the other thing you need to know about coaching is when you ask all these questions about your
05:14coach
05:17or a decision that you've made, now you're 10 toes down.
05:21Now you're fighting.
05:22So Harbaugh wants it to work because he made that decision when there may have been questions.
05:29He thought it would work for his quarterback because maybe he thought his quarterback had a level of skill
05:34that now maybe they're realizing he really doesn't have.
05:41And how did Jim Harbaugh know that Justin Herbert couldn't do this?
05:46Like, isn't he supposed to have the grasp of it?
05:49No, not really.
05:50Because you're, listen, so you're evaluating quarterbacks on their physical talents.
05:59But he's got him for two years.
06:01He knows what's talented, doesn't he?
06:02He's got the strong, no, because offenses are different.
06:05Like, a lot of quarterbacks, a lot of coaches, and a lot of offensive coordinators
06:13like the ball to be thrown outside the numbers, like the ball to be thrown down the field,
06:18like the ball to be thrown in the slants because you're eliminating half of the defense
06:23or a portion of the defense by throwing those different routes, right?
06:27So now you have a situation where you're throwing two openings, whether it's the squaring,
06:34whether it's the crossing route, whether you're trying to exploit a certain position on the field.
06:39If that quarterback is uncomfortable throwing it there, right?
06:45And it's very, it's, every quarterback can't do it.
06:50No, I understand, but, but isn't Jim's no, it's not like-
06:53He doesn't know mentally though.
06:54He, all he's looking at is the talent of his quarterback.
06:57Mentally, he doesn't know how my quarterback feels about making those throws.
07:02And you could see he kind of hesitates.
07:05Well, he thinks he can do anything.
07:06He apparently thinks he's a superhero.
07:08Well, but that's just his way of trying to get him to, hey, buddy, we know you can do this.
07:13It's like, it's equivalent to this.
07:16For the first few days we've been here, Luna would stand at the bottom of the stairs and bark
07:22because she wanted help going up the stairs.
07:26And-
07:26She barks about everything.
07:27But no, at the bottom of the stairs all night because nobody would help her up the stairs, right?
07:33Then finally she got so lonely, she went up the stairs.
07:37Now she runs up and down the stairs.
07:39Like, it's that.
07:40Until he gets comfortable, until he gets comfortable making these throws, which, again,
07:48everybody just chugs it up to, oh, there's the open guy.
07:50It's easy.
07:51It's not.
07:52It's hard to throw the ball in the middle of the feet.
07:54Yeah, I know.
07:54But the thing is, is like the coach, especially McDaniels coming-
07:58He's looking at talent.
07:59He's not looking at mental.
08:00I know, I know, I know.
08:01I know he's looking at talent, but I think that that's the big misread here.
08:04It's like, they both came in with this arrogance, like, oh, dude, your playbook and this quarterback,
08:09like, it's going to work amazing.
08:10And it's been terrible.
08:13Because I would say that the way they're looking at it, like, yeah, he's got a much stronger arm and
08:22tool.
08:22He can hit those windows and give the guy a better chance to run after the catch.
08:26Whereas they're not looking at it as, he's never really thrown the ball like that in the middle of the
08:30field, right?
08:31The other thing is, is that those patterns with the tight ends and stuff like that, a lot of over
08:36the top of the linebacker.
08:37You've got to have touch for that.
08:39Quarterbacks that throw the ball hard, that's not their thing.
08:43The guy looks covered because you can't drop it in.
08:48To win games, you have to win the game, not lose the game.
08:52Don't lose.
08:54Yeah.
08:56So, I get it.
08:58Like, it's possible that it's just not going to work.
09:02And so, do I think at some point, they'll wait until after the season because they're 0-4.
09:06So, we're good at changing it.
09:08You ain't turning the season around.
09:10I like Jim Harbaugh going, that sounded more like an insult than a question.
09:15Right.
09:15In a calm voice.
09:16I think maybe you're feeling a little insulted because your team stinks.
09:20Listen, nobody likes making bad decisions.
09:23I'm more than sure he's sitting at home with his wife in his khaki 90s.
09:28And you think he sleeps with khaki pajamas?
09:31Definitely.
09:34Either that or he just has full-blown, like, matching pajamas.
09:38Like, you know, like the butt-ups, you know.
09:40And then, like, once – and he has, like, a whole wardrobe.
09:43It's just all khakis, you know.
09:45Right.
09:46But, yeah.
09:48So, that's going to be the dilemma.
09:51And then, understand this.
09:54As this process moves on, I wouldn't be surprised if Justin Herbert has more tension.
10:00You know what I mean?
10:01Because most of it falls on him.
10:04He's even gotten a little spicy at these press conferences.
10:06And that dude never shows emotion.
10:08Right.
10:09Oh, no.
10:09Like, when all that smoke is on you, you got to kind of fight back.
10:16But, like –
10:16Do you think that Justin Herbert ever reaches out to Tua and he goes, how did you deal with this
10:20weirdo?
10:21No.
10:22There you go.
10:22But what I think they need to – because here's what happens.
10:29If you've been watching film for the first couple of weeks and they say, Justin, you got to hit this
10:34area right here.
10:35Right?
10:36Then what happens is he's not reading it.
10:38He's just trying to hit that area and now he's throwing picks.
10:41So, it's like now he's patting the ball.
10:44That's part of the problem.
10:45Part of the problem with that whole process is that he can't make timely decisions.
10:52And so, him patting the ball when the guy says, hey, I thought you were going to protect him a
10:58little more.
10:59It's like I can't protect the quarterback if it's a three-step drop and the ball is supposed to be
11:05out of your hands at 1.2 seconds and you hold it for four.
11:10That's not on the offensive line.
11:12I'll tell you who they hate because my Twitter for you page is a lot of chargers right now because,
11:16you know, I like – I'm a sicko.
11:19And they hate Alec Engold.
11:21Oh, do they hate him?
11:22Really?
11:23Oh, he tripped up their lineman the other day.
11:26Like, he made the left tackle fall over.
11:29They're like, this guy sucks.
11:32The same left tackle that asked him to chip on his way out.
11:37Then they yelled, don't chip.
11:39Okay.
11:41Man, what a time to be alive.
11:44Pure gold that hate watch has been this year.
11:46Real gold.
11:47I haven't had too many hate watches.
11:49I did hate watch Thursday night.
11:52That was fun.
11:53Talking about it.
11:54You came in peacocking last Friday.
11:56Oh, yeah.
11:57I had to come off vacation for that.
12:01I had to.
12:03I said it.
12:04I said it too.
12:05I'll be calling in.
12:07I said it too.
12:07I said it too.
12:07I said it too.
12:07I said it too.
12:08I said it too.
12:08I said it too.
12:08I said it too.
12:08I said it too.
12:08We'll see you next time.
