Real Southern banana pudding comes together here with a from-scratch custard, fresh bananas, and classic vanilla wafers, all layered into a creamy no-bake dessert that tastes like pure Southern comfort. The recipe starts with a simple double boiler and a stovetop custard made from sugar, flour, salt, egg yolks, and heavy whipping cream, stirred until thick and finished with vanilla.

Once the custard cools, the pudding is assembled in a cake pan with custard on the bottom, then repeated layers of vanilla wafers and banana slices, plus a final topping of custard and a little cinnamon sugar. The video also includes a meringue topping made from egg whites, sugar, and vanilla, beaten to stiff peaks and baked until lightly browned, though the creator notes the dessert can be enjoyed even if the topping isn’t perfect.

This is a nostalgic Southern banana pudding recipe, a no-bake dessert tutorial, and a homemade custard dessert for holidays, cookouts, family dinners, and any gathering where classic comfort food belongs. It’s a straightforward from-scratch dessert guide for anyone searching for banana pudding from scratch, Southern dessert recipes, vanilla wafer pudding, or classic custard-style banana pudding.

00:00Oh hey, what's up. Welcome to my kitchen. It's a little cluttered, but it's cool. It works. You can cook
00:09stuff here.
00:10What are we going to cook today you ask? Well today, we're going to need a dessert for our dinners.
00:17It can't always be about the savory. Sometimes you got to do the sweet, and we are going to bring
00:22the sweet today.
00:22We are going to make the ultimate banana pudding. That's right. It's easy. It's fairly quick.
00:31It's something that you can throw together, and it goes with almost any meal. Staple of the South, here it
00:38is.
00:38Your first step is going to be to set up a double boiler. This is super easy. It's literally just
00:43a bowl or pan set on top of a pot of boiling water.
00:46It allows for a soft heat and will help prevent burning. In goes 1 1⁄2 cup or 99 grams of
00:52granulated sugar, 1 1⁄3 cup or 52 grams of all-purpose flour,
00:58roughly 2 grams or 1 teaspoon of salt, 3 egg yolks, no whites, and finally 2 cups of heavy whipping
01:05cream.
01:07Grab your blender, start it a little too quickly, and shoot liquids all over your kitchen because why the hell
01:13not?
01:13Then, realizing you're not a savage, and you need to be a civilized human, slow it down a bit and
01:19try it again until your mixture has blended smooth.
01:22Next, grab a spoon or spatula because you're going to be stirring this MF for all eternity, aka 10 to
01:2812 minutes, or until you have a nice custard form.
01:32May God have mercy on your forearms, my dudes.
01:36Now, once your custard gets Ethan Klein thick, it's time to take it off the heat.
01:42Now, as soon as you remove it from the heat, make sure you drop in a 1⁄2 teaspoon of vanilla
01:47while stirring it in and basking in the glory of having made custard without it coming from a box.
01:55Now, let your custard cool down, and now is a great time to grab a minimum of 5 bananas, go
02:02ahead and peel them, and then make like Bobby Roode and slice them into glorious round pieces.
02:17Now that your custard is cooled down, you want to grab your cake pan, and layer it with custard.
02:24Distribute it evenly across the bottom, it'll help keep your next layer in place.
02:38Here is where you start to layer in your vanilla wafers and banana slices.
02:42You can really do this however you like, but I like to really layer the flavors in together, so I
02:48alternate them inside of each layer.
02:50My suggestion would be to make sure that you have at least one full layer of each.
03:03Now, once you get your layers set, it's time to circle back around and get a little more custard in
03:08the mix.
03:09From here on out, you'll really just repeat the process until you run out of goods or are happy with
03:14where you're at.
03:15Then, of course, we're going to add some cinnamon and sugar for gluttony's sake.
03:19And here's where I really screwed up.
03:21I took the egg whites from earlier and slowly added sugar as I beat the living hell out of them
03:26with this beater.
03:28I beat them for probably a solid 30 minutes before I realized that it wasn't going to form the meringue
03:35like I was hoping.
03:36And it's at this point I realized my rookie mistake.
03:39I got a clean bowl.
03:41I moved over to my mixer.
03:43Decided to give it another go.
03:45I mixed three egg whites, one-fourth cup of sugar, a dash of vanilla.
03:51Then I turned this bad boy on.
03:53I realized I probably should plug it in.
03:56And then I let the mixer do all the hard work, beating this son of a beat at stiff peaks.
04:02You'll know the battle is finally won when it looks a lot like whipped cream.
04:06And then you'll spoon it out onto your pudding, making sure to seal in the entire top of your dessert.
04:12Once you get it sufficiently spread, you're going to go ahead and toss it into a preheated oven at 350
04:18degrees for about 15 minutes or until the meringue has a slight brown tint to it.
04:48Now I let it go about 20 minutes and we're going to let it cool for about an hour and
04:53a half.
04:55Now that we've dressed it up and it's looking like the ultimate banana snack, here's where I got my video
05:01claim because I didn't realize my son was bumping that hot new Travis Scott joint and had to do a
05:06voiceover.
05:06Because I'm 14 videos in and I'm still making amateur mistakes.
05:10But this pudding is literal fire.
05:13It is so GD good.
05:16As you can see, I struggled a little bit with the meringue today on the top and I maybe could
05:22have pulled back just a little bit on the oven, maybe left it in for about closer to 15 instead
05:28of closer to 20 minutes.
05:29But it tasted phenomenal.
05:31It really just sets off the meal.
05:33Nobody's going to complain.
05:34It is awesome.
05:36So if you're looking for a great dessert, something that tons of people are going to like, that is appropriate
05:41for pretty much any situation, this is the one for you.
05:44And if you like this, go ahead and hit like on the video, leave a comment, subscribe.
05:50Every bit helps.
05:51I appreciate you guys stopping by and I'll be back next week with a brand new recipe.
