00:04caps open up their home season tonight um morning coach morning guys hey man good to hear from you
00:13coach back in the mix is training camp long enough it seems like it's two weeks and boom
00:17you guys are playing real games yeah they shortened it up um with the new cba so now
00:23there's only four exhibition games shorter training camp they've added two regular season games so
00:28we're up to 84 now um so it definitely is shorter this year because we didn't start um we were
00:36kind
00:36of one of the later teams to start it didn't like it felt okay like it i didn't feel like
00:42it felt
00:43really really short but also it didn't drag on so i thought it was it was right in the middle
00:48for us
00:48this year hey coach we know that tonight's a home game and and right now is the heaviest home stretch
00:54of your season i believe 11 of the next 13 at capital one arena so that's great but how do
01:00you handle the incessant travel that goes hand in hand with your job i mean jp and i took a
01:06quick
01:06overnight business trip up to new york city all the logistics were taken care of all the ubers we
01:12needed the hotel we were in was very central to where we had to broadcast yesterday but it was still
01:17like a lot of moving parts and you and your team are doing that all the time during the season
01:23i don't
01:24know how you do it crossing all the time zones like you're in you know different parts of the
01:29country you're in different countries how do you handle that travel on a daily and weekly basis
01:34i think um you do get used to it but having said that it is um especially when you get
01:44like halfway at
01:45the beginning of the year you've had the off season so you're like like the other night i'll give you
01:50an example we played a back-to-back we were in carolina then we played in tampa so you get
01:54into
01:55tampa around by your by the time you're at the hotel it's like two in the morning and then you're
02:00up
02:00and you've got coaches meetings players meetings in the morning whatever let's call it 11 a.m
02:06coaches meet at nine um so like you're you're you're still kind of got that juice from the off season
02:13now
02:13when you hit december that's when sometimes when you go on like the five six game road trips the
02:19three games where you're in multiple time zones you've got a back-to-back mixed in there maybe a
02:24longer flight where you're like some travel issues and you're getting in at like 3 a.m that's when um
02:30it can wear on you it's a grind yeah but you've got you don't you're on charter flights you don't
02:35have to stand in security you've got buses taking you you don't have to worry about ubers and cabs
02:39so it's yeah no we we are very very fortunate so like meals um buses the airplane and that is
02:48great
02:48it's it's just like sometimes you just it's a lack of sleep but you just grind through and
02:53that's why you get paid like you get paid takes years off your life that's right hey coach why was
02:59it important and was it ov's idea your idea to get out in front and just let everybody know hey
03:05this is it this is going to be his last year i i think it was his decision i think
03:11like with talking
03:12with the organization management the leonce's family um dick patrick chris brian mcclellan i i think
03:20they just felt like to get ahead of this and you know let everybody know that this was going to
03:26be
03:26his last season i i felt like this was the they thought that this was the best way to approach
03:32it i know
03:33some people may say and and a lot of what ov said in the past of like you know the
03:38the handshakes
03:39and all the stuff that this is going to come with i don't like the spotlight i don't want it
03:43to be
03:43about me but i think also when they talked it over and thought about it like this being ov's last
03:51year
03:52in the national hockey league i i think too there's a lot of pros to it for our team for
03:57him for the
03:57league and so i think he sort of came around on that um and that's why they announced it so

04:03tonight is one of the last four regular season ov sid matchups left before ov hangs him up has that
04:10sunk in yet for you that this personal rivalry that's really fed this caps pens blood feud over
04:16two plus decades is coming close to its conclusion i know that that's going to be something that's going
04:22to be very very like obviously always going to be missed but this part of his career and legacy the
04:30the oh sid rivalry is going to really be missed in in the game and and you're starting to see
04:36like
04:36maybe there's some new ones that start to come out but there's really i mean there's some team rivalries
04:42but but the way that they came in together the proximity the division both teams were really good
04:49at the same time so it like it just was this perfect storm to create this rivalry that people were
04:56it was like must watch tv like you wanted to see like oh sid novi are going at it again
05:01so that is
05:01like yeah definitely tonight and being on national tv at tnt game and and their first game of of o's
05:10last season uh going head to head it'll be and all four of them will be it'll be awesome because
05:15it is
05:15extra special when they play hey coach carbs we had the pleasure of having your guy justin sort of
05:21on the show yesterday oh nice uh he was good he did not seem very phased at all by the
05:27fact that
05:27he just signed a couple of weeks ago an eight year 50 million dollar extension he seems super down to
05:33earth very workman like and i'm sure that you and the organization are really happy to have him locked
05:39in long term and remember like this is a guy that when he was acquired by the caps people were
05:44like
05:44justin who you gave up yeah this sort of draft capital for for this guy why and now it's it's
05:51showing why you did it you guys are reaping the dividends of it yes swords is one of those guys
05:56like that in in pro sports you're like you know maybe money's gonna change this guy like if he
06:03you know signs a big ticket and sorty is the one that's a very safe bet that he will be
06:09the same guy
06:09in three four five years that he is today he's just exactly as you guys described him like down to
06:16earth i don't think he's gonna change one bit um signing the um the big deal in the long-term
06:23deal
06:23inside the organization he i was so happy for him i mean he was grinding in the minors in charlotte
06:29and
06:29i i reminded him of that of like did you ever think that this day was going to come a
06:33year and a half
06:34ago and and in charlotte the the arena there where the charlotte checkers the american league team of
06:40the florida panthers where he played multiple seasons it's called bojangles arena and i coached there
06:45quite a bit so he goes i go did you ever think from bojangles arena 13 months ago you'd be
06:52signing
06:52a 50 million dollar deal man congratulate it's like just awesome and happy for him you guys get
06:59like unlimited bojangles biscuits those are so good that had to be a perk right of working there good
07:04i'm sure the checkers are just uh they get the breakfast catered in by the bojangles for sure
07:10all right so coach uh just talk to us about the first couple of games your feelings on on the
07:16uh
07:16overall production obviously great win to open up down in carolina down in raleigh
07:20uh tough place to play but you pounded them tough back-to-backer you got to go to tampa lose
07:253-1 but
07:26just kind of give me your thoughts on those first two games i thought it was a positive opening weekend
07:31like the two really good teams i mean i don't know not a uh not a handicapper but i like
07:38those are two
07:39teams that i bet at the end of the year are going to be playoff type teams like they the
07:45defending cup
07:45champs tampa's been so good for so long and they still are right at the top so two really really
07:51good
07:51teams on the road um tampa's home opener so i i was pleased i thought probably we played well
07:57four and a half of the six periods you could maybe argue five of the six our first period in
08:03tampa
08:04was um was the one blip on the radar but so a good start where we're um you know it's
08:11going to be
08:12like it's going to take a little bit of time here we've got a lot of new guys especially inside
08:16of our
08:17forward group but even on the back end with day harney and and cole being an everyday player and
08:22timothy logren being an everyday player for us so the the chemistry and the continuity within
08:27our lineup is is going to take a little bit of time but i was encouraged by um by the
08:32first couple
08:32games on the road so i don't think we had a chance to talk to you in the off seasons
08:36we talked to
08:36spencer carvey head coach of the capitals about these additions kind of fill us in on on the strengths
08:43of of guys like tuck and cairo and what they bring to your team that you didn't have last season
08:49yeah so tuck he comes to us from the buffalo sabers he was actually with with vegas with the
08:55golden knights when the caps won the cup in 2018 so you may remember him was was more was a
09:00younger
09:01player at that point in his career went to buffalo and really blossomed into a um just a really good
09:08um every situation winger um he's big he can skate he can score he's got really good offensive instincts
09:18he's also a really good penalty killer so he plays in defensive situations great stick uh and the
09:25production has been there for for a bunch of years now so he's like your your big winger that is
09:32in
09:32every situation offensive and defensive guy jordan cairo is going to be your undersized so i'm smaller
09:39than tucky you know whatever it is 5 11 6 foot um but he can scoot he is a skater
09:47and he can
09:48fly and he's also very uh agile his lateral movement he's he's the guy that can potentially
09:55break you down in a one-on-one situation can spin can give you the old between your legs
10:00and all of a sudden he's attacking into a dangerous spot so he's a really creative
10:04high-end offensive speedster uh as a winger up front boone jenner is your heart and soul captain of
10:11the columbus blue jackets um for five years i believe and he's like your power forward
10:17penalty kill but also can chip in offensively and then on the back end vinnie de harney who you guys
10:22will come to um notice because he's six foot seven and just a house he's a defensive defenseman penalty
10:30kill guy yeah we had him on the show he was great he was awesome yeah great guy really good

10:36so uh i saw the former cap and hershey bear clay stevenson was a baller earlier this week he made

10:42saves for the jets against the pens on monday night how much did it pain you guys to have to
10:48put them on waivers i know i know you love your goalie room with lt and and chucky but i
10:53mean what
10:54what a good performance by him you had to feel good for that yeah i was happy for him it's
10:59it's one of
10:59those situations that just it sucks it's you feel like you've got three really really good goaltenders
11:06and you want to keep them all but because of the waiver rules and and how it works in our
11:10league like
11:11you can only keep two and um it was unfortunate to see him leave and go to go to another
11:16organization
11:17but happy for clay to get an opportunity to to start games in the nhl and while we're on the
11:21topic
11:22of goalies lt was really good uh against the canes and he was really good and his art on his
11:29mask
11:29the wedding crashers nod that's a 15 out of 10 i mean that's so great right unbelievable and i told
11:36them like um this summer we went over because i i had no idea like over on the um um
11:42sort of chesapeake
11:43bay area that is where they filmed like the wedding part of that have you guys ever been over there
11:48like
11:48st michael's i think or somewhere around there yeah yeah so we were on a boat and and it's like
11:53that's
11:53where the wedding crash wedding was filmed and i was like so i was uh what an uh yeah the
12:01pain oh all
12:02the different parts of that's so good what was the carberry family highlight of the summer when you
12:07actually had off time oh i would yeah we we did the worlds over in um switzerland and and uh
12:16for team
12:16canada and the kids got to come over for that as well like the last week of the tournament it's
12:21a long
12:21tournament the world championships it's like a month long so they do like players and the staff
12:27for the first three weeks it's just us and then once they get into the medal round all the families
12:32uh kids significant others come over so that was a cool experience for them to see like
12:38international hockey like play against finland and sweden and and it's just like a different vibe
12:43over there when you play like you represent your country and that so for the kids to be able to
12:47experience that was a pretty cool uh part of the summer hey coach real quick back to ovie
12:51um we know that like last year he was getting about 17 minutes and we noticed in the first two
12:55games he's in that 12 to 13 range so call it three or four minutes less uh i'm sure that
13:00was that's
13:00something you guys talked about in the offseason what was his what was his feeling about that and
13:05his reaction to to uh you guys you know dipping the minutes three or four minutes per game he he's
13:11good
13:11we talked about it in the summer we talked about it a few weeks ago before the season started and
13:16he
13:16understands where we're at as a team and and now all of a sudden being much deeper especially in the
13:21forward group power play wise we've got much more um or a lot more guys that are very very
13:29good um on the power play so we need to get them out there and so we've got 10 guys
13:3311 guys 12 guys
13:35that are capable of playing power play so he gets it and like yeah he wants to be out there
13:40and play
13:4125 minutes but he understands that there's a goal in mind here of trying to win on a nightly basis
13:47and
13:47try to contend for the stanley cup so he's all uh he's all in does he chirpy on the side
13:52like get
13:52me in get me in does do you hear that no no he does the look he does the look
13:57yeah look back yeah
13:59and i can feel his eyes glaring at me and sometimes i have to look away yeah yeah coach have
14:05you been
14:05chipping in with the construction over there at cap one donning a hard hat we got to see the caps
14:10hype tunnel and the new improved locker rooms really impressive what's being built over there to
14:15to add you know a new element to what's going on at capitol one a hundred percent like it's um
14:21so
14:21have you guys driven by at all like it's yeah it's parped off so like but what they're doing on
14:28the
14:28outside right now and and when it completely isn't unveiled is is going to be unbelievable the inside is
14:35incredible right now and especially on the on the event level and the locker rooms and all that so
14:41it's um it's getting there this this is going to be like a state of the art what they've done
14:46to be
14:46able to keep the same footprint basically keep the same structure and just re like modernize the whole
14:52thing in in the amount of time they have is incredible all right so you have the the penguins
14:57tonight home opener uh anything special you got to say to the guys or not really when it's pittsburgh
15:02and is there anything sort of from tampa that you tell the guys listen we just can't have that
15:06what we just had yeah you know yeah we talked about it uh because we've had three days like we
15:11took sunday off coming back from tampa and we've had two practice days so we go over the film and
15:16and
15:16look at some good things that we did some things some areas that we need to clean up and and
15:21tonight
15:21like i always home openers it's not a lot like in december january like sometimes as a coach you got
15:29to like drum up some some urgent mojo yeah yes like let's let's crank it up here fellas tonight
