President Donald Trump says he will speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin “very soon” as U.S. officials closely monitor a suspected pneumonic plague death in Siberia.

Trump confirmed that a call with Putin is already scheduled. When asked when it would happen, he simply said, “Very soon.” Asked about U.S. intelligence assessments surrounding the reports, Trump said the administration was in “very deep discussions.”

The developments come after the U.S. Embassy in Moscow issued a health alert regarding reports of a suspected pneumonic plague case in Russia’s Irkutsk region. A 28-year-old employee of the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute died last week from pneumonia of undetermined origin, though Russian officials have not confirmed plague as the cause.

The State Department and CDC are monitoring the situation, while several neighboring countries have introduced additional health precautions. Officials say the risk to the general public remains low.

Trump indicated that more information could be available soon, saying, “We'll be able to report about it probably tomorrow.”
