In this scene, Elena Gilbert receives a terrifying phone call from Alaric Saltzman, who has been transformed into an enhanced, indestructible vampire hunter bound to Elena’s life. Alaric has kidnapped Caroline Forbes and is holding her hostage at Mystic Falls High School.
When Elena arrives at the school, she tracks Caroline’s cries to a classroom and is horrified to find her tied to a desk with sharp pencils driven straight through the palms of both hands. Alaric uses the situation to torment Elena and try to force her into a dark reality. He forces a cloth soaked in vervain into Caroline’s mouth, which burns her intensely, while trying to pressure Elena into using a white oak stake to kill Caroline herself. Alaric’s goal is to break Elena’s compassionate nature and train her to become a cold-blooded vampire hunter, believing she needs to learn how to eradicate vampires. Eventually, Elena fights back by throwing glass and vervain in Alaric’s face, allowing her and Caroline a brief chance to escape before chaos ensues with Klaus and the other vampires.
