In this emotionally heavy sequence, Caroline Forbes is struggling immensely with the overwhelming sensory overload and bloodlust of her newly transitioned vampire state. When Matt comes to Caroline after noticing how strangely she’s been acting over the past few days, he assumes she might not be interested in him. So he comes to confess his feelings and says, “I think I’m in love with you, but it seems like you don’t feel the same way…”

Then she hugs him, but because she’s a newly turned vampire, she suddenly feels the bloodlust kicking in. She remembers Stefan’s techniques for controlling it, how he taught her to stay calm and control herself, and she does exactly what he taught her, focusing on her breathing and slowly calming herself down. And it actually works.
