00:00Spanish government approved on Tuesday emergency measures to address the housing crisis after an
00:04outbreak of violence in the coastal city of Barcelona the previous night that drew tens
00:07of thousands of people into the streets. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's government approved
00:11measures similar to those rejected by parliament last Friday which prompted his call for early
00:16elections on November 29th. The measures will be sent for notification by an interim latest leisure
00:21known as permanent commission which remains active until the elections. This way the government is
00:27using the parliament's dissolution amid the snap election process in a new effort to pass the
00:31overturned housing decrees that mainly proposed eviction protections for vulnerable households
00:36without alternative housing and a mandatory extension of residential lease agreements through
00:402028. The new decrees which maintain the essence of the rejected laws will be now examined in a
00:46special parliamentary council.
00:58As you are aware, the cabinet has approved two royal decree laws which, whilst incorporating certain
01:04additions that we consider to be very positive, retain the essence of the two royal decree laws that
01:09lapsed in the plenary session of the congress of deputies last Friday. We have done so because the
01:14circumstances that led to these royal decree laws being introduced have not changed over the past two
01:19days and, therefore, these royal decree laws would, of course, benefit ordinary people in terms of access to
01:26and protection of housing.
